It was agreed that the drugs should be used. The drugs was then released to Spain and Liberia free of charge. BioPharma complained of running out of stock (I believe the financial cost was too high for them to produce and distribute in Africa).

Now they have agreed to distribute, we can not use the fact they refused earlier based on ethical grounds not to go for the drug. Our government and the ministry of health should have also contacted Tekmira for their own experimental drug (TKM-Ebola) and FujiFilm for their own instead of this embarrassing stunt.

The drug isn't a pesticide and I believe the only reason why it was banned in certain countries was because it was being overused. Calling it a pesticide is far reaching.

In as much as it's an anti-bacterial drug that can't cure ebola - they should at least let them test it on the infected people, to see if it might help a bit with the symptoms. There's no cure for the disease, and the people might die regardless. So, they might as well use one or two of the infected people to experiment it. It's neither going to kill them, nor cure the disease. But if it can reduce whatever pains they might be going through - then give it pass! Dammit!

The clinically approved drugs amiodarone, dronedarone and verapamil inhibit filovirus cell entry.

OBJECTIVES:
Filoviruses such as Ebola virus and Marburg virus cause a severe haemorrhagic fever syndrome in humans for which there is no specific treatment. Since filoviruses use a complex route of cell entry that depends on numerous cellular factors, we hypothesized that there may be drugs already approved for human use for other indications that interfere with signal transduction or other cellular processes required for their entry and hence have anti-filoviral properties.

METHODS:
We used authentic filoviruses and lentiviral particles pseudotyped with filoviral glycoproteins to identify and characterize such compounds.

RESULTS:
We discovered that amiodarone, a multi-ion channel inhibitor and adrenoceptor antagonist, is a potent inhibitor of filovirus cell entry at concentrations that are routinely reached in human serum during anti-arrhythmic therapy. A similar effect was observed with the amiodarone-related agent dronedarone and the L-type calcium channel blocker verapamil. Inhibition by amiodarone was concentration dependent and similarly affected pseudoviruses as well as authentic filoviruses. Inhibition of filovirus entry was observed with most but not all cell types tested and was accentuated by the pre-treatment of cells, indicating a host cell-directed mechanism of action. The New World arenavirus Guanarito was also inhibited by amiodarone while the Old World arenavirus Lassa and members of the Rhabdoviridae (vesicular stomatitis virus) and Bunyaviridae (Hantaan) families were largely resistant.

CONCLUSIONS:
The ion channel blockers amiodarone, dronedarone and verapamil inhibit filoviral cell entry.

Has this drug been subjected to test? I see know reason why FDA should tag an experimental drug as a pesticide. This drug should be tested before they make conclusions.

In as much as I do not admire this our over-dependence on America, let's engage a little touch of reality here. We simply can not disentangle ourselves from them, not just yet. Nigeria, just like any other African country, can not just turn her back on the Western world knowing well enough that we still depend on them for a whole lot of things.
