Ebola: FG Warns Two International Media by Harryjoshua4: 12:33pm On Aug 15, 2014
The Federal Government has warned two international media over their reportage of the deadly Ebola virus outbreak in the country. The federal government in a statement issued on Thursday by two ministers in Abuja, a copy obtained by The Nation, said it might be forced to take action against the international media houses following their bias report of EVD in the country. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who was a signatory to the statement, said the two media houses have been totally unfair in their report about Ebola outbreak in Nigeria.“It was also observed that a segment of international media had been totally unfair with their comments regarding to the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria and little have been said about the successful containment in terms of ensuring that it does not spread rapidly as it’s done in other countries.“up till now the disease is limited to only one state and all those who are suffering from Ebola virus as small as the number is are all primary contacts of the index case which came through a Liberian-American.“Within this week prior to the meeting conveyed by the President, the country has carried out so many activities on Ebola” Chukwu said.

Reacting also, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who issued the statement said:“We have had worries from some international media whose report could cause panic at the international level. We have noticedtwo that have particularly refused to send the true position of things in Nigeria in-spite of all our efforts to brief the media in a transparent way.”Maku, who condemned the mannerwhich the accused media houses have been presenting Nigeria’s Ebola case to the world, was if the over one thousand victims are all Nigerians.Meanwhile, a recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report states that a total of 128 new cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) as well as over 1000 deaths so far recorded from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. It would be recalled that the deadly disease was brought to Nigeria by a Liberian,Patrick Sawyer, who reportedly died after five days. The Nigerian government on its part has putmeasures in place to curtail its spread as well as possibly come up with a cure.

Let the leaders of the country fight the spread responsibly.

If not, we deserve the image we receive.

When the minister of health came out few days ago to tell Nigerians that the Ebola patients are stable and responding to treatment, was it international media that came out to voice out their frustrations about federal gov't negligence and lack of care for d infected people? It was Nigerians, families and colleagues of the infected people that talked, meaning if they (govt) do the right things, we Nigerians will be the first to praise them and vice versa but if they continue the way they're doing, we'll still talk even before international media does.

They should stop all these threats and focus on containing or finding cure for the deadly virus, coz the world is not blind to recognise any positive changes concerning the fight against Ebola.

You are right. What matters now is a cure for ebola, not a cure for bad press!
