Lagos — Former African Discuss and Shot put champion, Adewale Olukoju says Nigeria is depending and expecting too much on Commonwealth gold medalist, Blessing Okagbare for athletics success.

The United States of America-based former athlete told this to Daily Independent when asked to comment on the performance of Nigeria's athletics team to the last Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

He said: "They are relying too much on Blessing. She is the best Nigerian athlete ever produced, but we are expecting too much from her. "

On the ream's Scotland pilgrimage, Olukoju said: "As a team I guess they did the best they could. Very happy for the Long Jump girl. I hope she will be sent to a better environment and be properly developed"

Commenting further on the team, he advised that young and dedicated coaches be helped abroad to places where they can be trained for them to return and develop the athletes to better heights.

His words: ". I don't see any reason for us to be purchasing athletes with no connection to Nigeria. We have athletes with great potentials, but lack the program and environment for them to be developed into world class athletes. It will help to send young dedicated coaches to countries or clubs where they could be trained and learn how to better develop young athletes. Young ex athletes like Ado Maude, Soetan and Omagbemi.
