Connect your iPad to your TV: Apple Digital AV adapter

1. Connect the adapter to your iPad’s dock connector.

2. Connect an HDMI cable to both the TV and the Digital AV adapter. (Note that you can also connect the HDMI cable to a suitably-equipped AV receiver rather than directly to your TV. You can then benefit from the better sound quality from the speakers attached to the receiver.)

3. Using your TV’s remote control, select the correct HDMI input (sometimes they are numbered and the side input is usually identified as such). If you’ve connected an AV receiver, be sure to select the correct input. Many have a front-mounted HDMI input labelled AUX.

4. Turn on your iPad, unlock it and launch the Photos app. You should see the selected photo on both your TV and the iPad.

5. If necessary, you might need to adjust your TV’s settings so the image displays correctly. Commonly the automatic zoom setting tries to avoid any black borders and distorts the image or zooms in and crops the top and bottom edges.

6. Launch the app you want to use. Most of Apple’s apps support HDMI output, but some catch-up TV and video streaming services don’t.

How to Connect Your iPad to Your TV

Connect the iPad to your HDTV through HDMI

Apple's Digital AV Adapter will allow you to connect the iPad to your TV through an HDMI cable, which transfers both HD-quality video and sound. The original iPad is capable of 720p video with the Digital AV Adapter, and the iPad 3 and iPad 2 support up to 1080p.

Like connecting with Apple TV, hooking up an iPad with the Digital AV Adapter supports Display Mirroring, which means you'll see your iPad's display even if the individual app doesn't support video output. This is great for watching Hulu Plus on your HDTV.

You can also stream your movie collection from you PC to your iPad to your HDTV using home sharing. This is a great way to finally switch from DvD and Blu-Ray to digital video without losing the ability to see it on your big screen TV.
The Digital AV Adapter is also a great solution for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and 4th Generation iPod Touch.

Connecting the iPad to Your TV With Apple TV and AirPlay
What you need
To use AirPlay, you need these:

iPhone 4 (or later), iPad, iPad mini, or iPod touch (4th generation or later)
For videos or photos: Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)
For music: Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), AirPort Express, or AirPlay-enabled speakers or receivers

Because it's wireless and offers video-streaming extras, the Apple TV is the best solution. It's $99, and you'll most likely keep it in one spot, but freedom from fussing with cables make it the best choice. Plus, there's an awesome bonus for gamers.

With an Apple TV set up, photos, videos, music, and even some app content can be beamed to your TV from your iDevice with a few taps. And, with newer iDevices, you can even mirror your entire iDevice's display, giving you a big-screen view of everything happening on your phone. It all happens through Apple's coveted AirPlay feature.

And now more than ever, developers are adding AirPlay compatibility to their apps. To name a few, Vevo, TED, Hulu (Plus), and PBS all let you beam videos from the app to the Apple TV.
Some games are AirPlay compatible, too, letting you use your iDevice as a controller while you play the game on the big screen. At times, you'll notice lag, and video quality isn't perfect, but Ducati Challenge and Metalstorm: Wingman are just a couple games worth trying out.
