Sincere9gerian: This is what you get in a society that encourages EVIL. When ASUU was on strike for 6 months and were collecting salaries and moving from one TV station to another defending that evil strike, most Nigerians cheered them on. I was one of the very few voices that opposed the ASUU strike.

Well, since ASUU succeeded with the connivance of the larger society, you should expect other labour unions to also follow suit.

NMA has always cited the ASUU example to justify it's current strike.

Every society should learn to live with evil or monster it creates.

Labour unionism has been elevated to a very lucrative business and an alternative govt in Nigeria.

Strike is not the only approach for pressing for demands by these labour unions, especially in a democracy, but they have all adopted strikes because of laziness.

The last tym I checked, NMA is not registered with Labor Union.

Here is the problem you have.

You are angry with all doctors because they are on strike...and because you know you cannot do without them. So,you lash out and ask them to return to their work.

The thing is,most of you people do not think about the conditions that your average health care worker works under. We lack a lot of facilities, we have bad light and water supply ,and we work long hours. And there are too few of us....right now there are 40,000 doctors for 160million people.(That is why most Nigerians never see a doc....there are too few of us.).

Now, the reason why there are few doctors is due to the fact that 1.)Because of poor funding for the university system....we do not have enough lecturers...and enough places to train lots of new student doctors.2).We have such bad and limited facilities that many of us have gone out of the country because we are tired of seeing patients die in our presence because we lacked X or could not make the diagnosis on time because of Y....or we don't have drug Z.

Solving those problems are part of the reason why the residents are on strike. Now...a little info....the NARD...that is the resident doctors union....have been on strike for longer than NMA. And a big part of the reason why they are on strike is for improved training facilities, and improved funding for residency....because a big part ofour residency is the clinical research they do....and both require money.

But you don't see that...all you see arrogant doctors. And you see the fact that you lost a friend in the hospital....and you think it was our negligence that did it.True...some of us are negligent....and some are arrogant. But most of the time...patients suffer in our hospita lbecause....thanks to lackoffunding....we do not have the means to help them.(And it makes me feel sad....when we have lost the stroke case because we did not have a CT scan to find out on time that she had a hemorrhagic stroke).

In my opinion,NMA and JOHESU ,as I have said several times on here....should join hands and fight for better funding for the health care sector...because what docs go through....nurses, pharmacists et al go through. Right now...we are in an egocentric fight over titles. But that does not mean we are also not fighting for better facilities....especially through the medium of NARD.

I hope you see the problem. Or maybe you don't want to...because solving it means either increasing funding for health care OR raising fees for services....so that government can pay for new facilities. It also means doing the same for university education. Regardless of what you think....we docs(including me, who has worked in rural care for most of my working life) want to serve you better. But we can't continue to do that under policies that generate acrimony between members of the health care team....as well as awful facilities.

But of course you do not have to agree with me.

Still....our health care system is in crisis. And it isn't the staff's fault.

Go and rest.
You guys have lost it all.
Respect and honor.

Morotov1: Which item number is listed on the 24 items for better facilities, you know they joined up their demands to make up the 24 demands without any references to better facilities. NMA is a collection of all doctors Union in Nigeria, NARD is part of NMA. So their demands are all and one.

Not entirely accurate....NARD has been on strike for longer....and has had separate issues with the Government.

One thing about the NMA-JOHESU spat.....you can't have a soccer/association football team with eleven captains. That's all the NMA is saying....plus JOHESU is refusing to clarify fully what a consultant nurse will do....or a consultant pharmacist. Having too many leaders of the team treating the patient is bad for said patient's care.

I may not like u guys for your selfishness and greed but I admire your calm disposition and ability to respond to provocation in a calm manner. Kudos.
That being said, you guys have a case but going on strike is forbidden. Certain professions can't go on strike and d medical profession is one of those. Doctors are just like other Nigeria workers suffering poor infrastructure but most of you are egoistic and think u should be placed on a higher pedestal. What we all should be fighting for is a better Nigerian where all Nigerians would have a better life.

Well,as I explained up thread....part of the reason for the strike is to prevent there being too many captains on the health care team (and JOHESU would have helped a lot if they had defined what they meant by a consultant nurse or pharm or physio). Too many captains can lead to too many cooks spoiling the broth....bad for patient care.

The resident docs strike is partly for welfare, partly for better facilities. Because govt runs too many hospitals, facilities are in a bad state(The Old Woman in the shoe with too many children scenairo). So....either govt increases funding....or fees go up(which would makeit harder for Nigerians).

Honestly NMA and JOHESU need to fight for better health care togehter. That is my position.

As for docs not going on strike....the law does not prohibit docs from going on strike.....or indeed nurses, pharmacists, etc.(It does forbid armed forces and paramilitary forces from striking...that is why the Nigeria Police strike of 2001 was illegal.....although if the Nigeria Police was called the Nigeria Police Service..it would have been legal. Rules,eh?).

Anyway......the health care system needs improving. And if government cannot increase funding...it better say so....so that we either privatize, remove fuel subsidy and use the money for health, or pay higher taxes.

Have to log off for work now.

I hope such happens.....could hammer out several things.....then both NMA and JOHESU can turn to the real matter....

6. The acceleration of the passage of the National Health Bill and extension of the Universal Health Coverage to cover 100 per cent of Nigerians rather than 30 per cent as currently prescribed by the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.

and

Increased funding for facilities and training.

PointB: Before we get swayed by the doctors tantrum, let's not lose sight of their 24 key demand.

Summary of the doctors demands:

1. Create more offices (and more money) for us
2. Don't send anyone to monitor the money
3. Skip level 12, we can't wait to collect more money
4. Refer to Nos 2
5. Pay us 22 years areas of some money, and then increase our wage
6. Expand the health bill so we can make more money
7. Appoint one of us surgeon general so that he can protect us and fight for our money
8. Adjust our level so that we can make more money
9. Increase our call duty allowance by 90%
10. Adjust upward our specialist allowance
11. Increase our hazard allowance from 5k/mnth to 100k/mnth
12. Release circular showing our allowances, all of us must be included
13. When we need to import In-Vitro Diagnostics, IVDs equipment, we don't want knowledgeable institution to check/license it.
14. Tell us our retirement age (obviously they don't want to retire, more money to be made in active duty)
15. We want more funding for our residency training
16. For peace to reign pay our colleagues in Owerri what you agreed
17. We must continue to enjoy the goodies in IPPIS platform
18. Attempt to prevent our collective bargaining (for more money) will be resisted
19. Lab scientist should stop intimidating us (we are the big boys, we make more money)
20. Stop short paying us for any reason (we want all our money in full)
21. Do for us what they do for doctors abroad
22. Set aside more money to furnish our offices (hospitals)
23. Medical director must be a medical doctor (It can not be a pharmacist, dentist, and never a lab scientist). We must chop alone
24. Stop violating our 2009 agreement. Pay us our money!!

There you have it. The two dozen demands of our doctor in plain language. The demands causing our brethren to die at home, and in hospital while doctors stay away. These are the demands making our people to resort to bathing and drinking salt water to death, as they run scare of Ebola Virus Disease, while our doctors prefer to stay at home and wait for their money.

Our doctors have sworn to protect their moneys, while our collective health is the ransom! If gold can rust, pray, what will happen to Iron?

ASUU was promised N3trillion over two-four years in 2009. When they did not get that money....they went on strike in 2013. Govt then gave them one trillion over 5 years(1/3RD of what they asked for.....and over a longer period).

See the problem (and by extension why fees are going to go up in the next five years.).

Well there is a reason why Ebola spread so badly in Africa....and why it will never spread in the US......good isolation facilities, good labs...etc.....which all cost money.(And running water...24/7).

Can't fight with Ebola....when you don't have the adequate tools to begin with. Or you want to lose more medical staff to the disease.?

sammieguze: Medical doctors, came out en masse to protest the recent sacking of 16,000 of their members by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The protest was held at Lagos University Teaching hospital, (LUTH), Idi Araba and headed by Dr. Tope Ojo, Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association.
The medical practitioners say as opposed to the widespread view that they are fighting for increment in remuneration, they are actually agitating for better structures and equipment in hospitals across the country.

Refurbish Nigeria Hospitals..Public office Holders should stop Oversea medical treatments..are they different/special than the electorate..{Lol as if there is votes or our votes counts in Nigeria}...Then we can talk about sacking process and conditions

You guys can fight for all the money you like, at the end of the day, you will negotiate, I feel doctors are well paid enough in the public sector, but if they can get better by negotiating, I do not have a problem with that. The issue I have with them is trying to dominate everything, that is just not on, the regulators and administrators should determine the structure not the doctor, he is not trained to do that, all this nonsense of captains in a ship is just BS, once the structure of an organisation is in place, everybody does his or her own assigned job, why should it be unions determining who gets what, tail wagging the dog.

All these Federal Character appointed Doctors. Open the employment scheme and do it on merit. Many young Doctors and at home while some are under paid working in private clinics while the privileged ones who got their Federal Govt jobs through knowing prominent politicians are recruited. Eject them from the free houses they occupy. Let every doctor compete for the available position and that will teach them a lesson.
