The Human Rights Writers’
Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) on
Tuesday declared that its
investigation has not been able to
establish the allegations of the
existence of “Ghost Corpers” in the
National Youths Service Corps
(NYSC).
In a statement in Abuja and signed by
its National Coordinator, Emmanuel
Onwubiko, and the National Media
Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, the
group said, “we can for the time
being state without equivocations
that we are unable to trace the
existence of any ghost participants in
the annual national youth service
scheme run by the management of
the National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC).
“We have also been shown evidence
of refund of unspent funds by the
current management”.
HURIWA stated that it has suspended
its decision for the time being of
dragging the management of the
NYSC to the Coordinating Minister of
the Economy and Minister of Finance
Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and
relevant anti-graft bodies following
allegations of fraudulent practices
brought to its attention by some
concerned petitioners working in the
NYSC.
HURIWA had two weeks ago based
on a petition at its disposal from
anonymous insiders from the NYSC
disclosed its plan to proceed to the
Office of the co-ordinating minister of
the economy and the anti-graft
agencies if they were not satisfied
with the veracity of the allegations of
over N90 billion fraudulent diversion
of unspent funds by the management
of the NYSC.
