I read the article about the spouses of the two primary contacts who recently tested positive for Ebola after being initially discharged for being negative. Immediately, a possibility that might have been ignored came to my mind and i thought of starting a thread where Nigerians can voice ideas and strategies to beat this virus out of our nation soonest. Now to my suggestion. Are the homes the discharged/ebola negative patients returned to disinfected before allowing them to return there? I mean there may be items and cosmetics used by the primary contact with the virus still present in them. I think the homes of all the primary and secondary contacts should be disinfected using world health standards. That way, we avoid discharging a negative patient only for the patient to return home to get infected and develop symptoms. |

The purpose of the thread as stated above is not just about my suggestion or whether i am right or wrong. It is for anyone with suggestions that the handlers may be overlooking to voice such suggestions. To your question, how long does it survive outside a host? The virus can survive in liquid or dried material for a number of days (5). Infectivity is found to be stable at room temperature or at 4°C for several days, and indefinitely stable at -70°C (3, 4). Infectivity can be preserved by lyophilisation. So i still believe the homes of all primary contacts or ebola positive patients need to be disinfected. |
