Define "great".  Was Hilter great?  Was Idi Amin great? Is Osama Bin Ladin great?

You are missing the point of this thread. Obviously what Hitler did was terrible, but he was a great field general and tactician.

Let's see . . . we have a bunch of Arm chair 'warriors', gap toothed malevolent homosexuals, oil bunkering buffoons, gun runners, criminals, murderers, genocide apologists . . . The greatest Nigerian 'War' General of all time you said? You are searching for him in the wrong country/continent . . .

huh why are you attributing the successes of guys like Rommel to hitler?? hitler was a charismatic leader but he wasn't a great general.

grafikdon-what genocide are u talking about??
Re: Greatest Nigerian War General Of All Time by Nobody: 6:36pm On Oct 23, 2008
It's between Brigadier General Benjamin Adekunle(black scorpion) and General Olusegun Obasanjo.
They guys led the Nigerian side in the civil war against ojukwu-led biafra. Adekunle was a master strategist, a brilliant soldier, while Obasanjo's gallantry during the civil war was also highly commendable.

The Generals of the 1960's thru early 80's are the Generals I respect in Nigeria, not those who never went to war and became Academic General.

Apart from Obasanjo other notable civil war heroes include David Bamgboye,Theophilus Danjuma,Alani Akinrinade,David Jemibewon,David Ejoor,Musa Yar'Adua,Mobolaji Johnson, Hassan Usman Katsina and other Generals of the 1960's-70's!!!

Go and read about the 1967-70 civil war.

Nigeria has produced many tacticians in the field of embezzlement and not governance or defence. IBB,ABacha, Obasanjo etc were seasoned robbers that armed themselves with guns legally.

"Desk" general not necessaily referring to him at the battlefront. kind of like Caesar, who was a great leader. Hitler, like you said was a was more of a genius at psychological manipulating. He was a horrible general if anything. He never rose to the rank of a general. We see the types of decisions and order he made as a general.  Attacking Russia?  Not a smart move.  Especially Stalengrad.  Germany was finished the minute Hitler decided to attack Russia.  He became to greedy and did not weigh the pros and cons of the situation.

Hitler repeatedly ignored the advice of his generals.  Most of which probably could have won the battles that they lost if it had not been for Hitler's involvement.

Attacking Russia in the Winter?  wow.

Ignoring Brittain to focus on Russian when his generals still claimed they could subdue them in months provided they were given troops? wow

Don't know why Seun brought him up.

Anyhoo.

benjamin adekunle black scorpion
ojukwu is a war general as well
Re: Greatest Nigerian War General Of All Time by gabelogan(m): 12:31am On Oct 24, 2008
i think it has to be Ojukwu

during the civil war, the odds were stacked heavily against the biafran army, yet the were able to hold the nigerian army for over 3 years.
the biafran army lacked a lot of things, weapons, ammunitions, manpower, etc, in contrast the nigerian army were well equipped (the nigerian army expended more ammuniton during the biafran war then the british army did in world war 2).
Ojukwu was brilliant, tactically astute and he did know how to rally his troops.

We are not talking about whether some soldiers enrich themselves, we are talking about bravery, gallantry and war tactics. You list is OK though, save that I'm not sure of Fajuyi.

dayokanu:

Obasanjo for what?

Obasanjo's role in civil war was monumental. He played a great role for the Nigerian side. He was held in high esteem until he spoilt his reputation as a civilian President

None other than these from the Third Marine Commandoes:

1.  Major General Adekunle (The Scorpion) - small in stature but master military strategist
2.  Brigadier Danjuma
3.  Colonel Alabi

aaahhh. . . lol
Do you know history at all?
Immediately Murtala was assassinated on February 13,1976, it was Obj and Alani Akinrinade that displayed rare bravery that led to Dimka's coup foiled. Obasanjo took over Lagos, coming up with brilliant tactics that got Dimka and Bissalla arrested.

You can call Obasanjo anything but not coward. Obasanjo was a General in the real sense of the word!!!

Please verify the role the two GEnerals Obj and Akinrinade played.

From the excerpts of interview granted by Gen Danjuma, and a film about the killing of a black President, Gen Obj's where about at that time was not known. This has led to some theorist insinuating he was privy of the coup. All document showed Gen Danjuma And Col. IBB as the Soldiers that foiled the coup - IBB dislodged Col. Dimka from Radio House with out a Shot. Gen.Bisalla's role was revealed by Col.Dimka during interrogation.

That is not to say that Gen OBJ's performance during the civil makes him less a soldier. Indeed he is a General.

On the issue I think I have reservations on the List so far. As some of the Generals refereed to actually forced their way into governance with their guns and boot. Since that is not the terrain to access good war general vs civil populace.

Also for those that fought during the Civil War;Gen Adekunle,Gen ObJ,Gen Murtala among others, should not qualify as we did not fight our "enemies". Brothers do not fight and one tries to brag about how skillfull you are.

And for the likes Gen Aguyi Ironsi- Congo war:Gen Victor Malu,Gen Dongoryaro,Gen Shelpidi all Ecomog. Gen Martin Luther Agwai- Sudan. This are people that fit into the war Generals Group then let the greatest be picked.

I dont know what history you read.

Obj was hiding under the bed of Chief Akinmabogunje house in Ikoyi.

It was Danjuma that foiled that coup: PLEASE READ YOUR HISTORY very well.

The coup attempt eventually failed seven hours later, crushed by forces rallied and directed from a temporary base at Bonny camp by Lt. General T. Y. Danjuma, Chief of Army Staff, whose designated assassin (reportedly Lt. Lawrence Garba) had chosen at the last moment to spare him at the Marina Jetty, allegedly in part to avoid collateral casualties.  When Danjuma got to the office and heard the radio broadcast, he held a brief "war council" with Colonels Bali and Babangida, then moved to Bonny camp to coordinate the resistance. Babangida was sent on a motor cycle to Ikeja Cantonment to get armoured vehicles.  Supported by these vehicles he proceeded to Radio Nigeria, where he had a conversation with his close friend Dimka

--

General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd) has written that he was late in leaving home that day on account of a visit by Brigadier Olu Bajowa to get a name for his new baby.  When it became apparent that there was trouble, Obasanjo executed an escape and evasion maneuver, spent most of the day at the house of a civilian friend in Ikoyi monitoring the situation by telephone,

@ landis and boyscout,

I appreciate when people bring facts, and I've learnt some new things from the facts you brought forward. It's been a while I read books on Nigerian history/politics of the 60-70's. Maybe I still have to dust Dad's history books and read again. I realize I've started mixing up facts. . . . but I try, abi I no try? lol

Don't make me laugh, since when has fighting against small armed traders and civils servant equates one as a great soldier? And it took them 3 years of starvation of their opponents to achieve it.
Keep searching! Coup plotting and stealing from the poor masses, Nigeria has countless field marshals but in threatre of war? forget it!!!!!!!!
