Well....
First of all, I will strongly advise you to keep your options wide open and not restrict yourself to the oil industry.
The oil industry, especially in Nigeria is currently in a lull due to prevailing low oil prices (which many predict will last for quite a while), poor government funding and the renewed activities of ND militants. Thus, many oil firms are shedding redundant staff or aggressively looking for opportunities to minimize cost.
That being said, there are numerous opportunities for civil engineers particularly in the upstream industry. A civil engineer can work as a structural engineer (constructing/maintaining concrete and steel structures), environmental engineer, project engineer, etc. As a matter of fact, the basic requirement to work for an IOC is a good grade in any relevant engineering discipline. You can be deployed to work in any vacant engineering position. You will be trained on the job. I know civil engineers that ended up being drilling and even reservoir engineers.
For a fresh engineer, acquiring further degrees is usually preferable to certification. A Masters in structural, petroleum or environmental engineering will be good.
For certification, I will say go for Project Management or Safety (NEBOSH). In addition, try to join NSE as a graduate member.

please i need your helo....i need to make a decision between being a process engineer or a qa/qc analyst. Which of them is better for a career in IOC's. Everyone's advise will be appreciated. Thanks

This is meant for those who desire a career in the oil and gas industry, especially for graduates and undergraduates who may want to be informed.

1) Geoscientists
2) drilling engineers/ drilling supervisors/driller

3) subsea engineers
4) subsurface and completions engineers
5) pipeline and piping engineers

6) Marine specialists / engineers

7) Offshore maintenance technicians

(8.) Truck drivers and crane operators

9) Tax accountant

10) Reservoir Engineers

Boss I know it's being a long time since you wrote this, but I wish to know, with the current scheme of things in the Nigerian oil & gas, and the energy sector, has this list changed? I'm currently stuck between making a choice to either go for an MSc in pipeline engineering or petroleum geoscience, I studied petroleum engineering in my first degree and haven't been able to get a good job since graduation, I know an MSc isn't an express ticket to gainful employment, but I want something to increase my competence and versatility with intent to position myself better for opportunities. I had earlier considered getting the MSc in Occupational health and safety, but I was advised it's not technical enough for an engineer, what do you think? Which of the above three programs do you think will give me a better chance, in the energy sector generally not just in oil & gas, considering my first degree background. Thanks.

Cc: nkiruberyl, I see you've gotten a lot of advice from so many great men here, what would you say to me?

My advice has always been that graduates never focus all their energy and resources on IOCs alone. Irrespective of how qualified and smart an individual is, the chances of working for an IOC is never 100% (mildly saying), in reality, it is much less.
Can you be more specific about which area of QA/QC. Cos QA/QC is a very, very broad term and is used in variety of industries. Each sector/ industry has unique criteria for QA/QC. And even within the oil industry, there is a wide variety of roles that fall under QA/QC. So no one cap fits all.
Overall, I would say process engineers are more versatile and are required not only in the oil industry but other industries as well. You require a process engineer in all stages of oil industry (upstream, midstream and downstream) as well as others such manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, etc.

Snowjay, been a while bro.
To be sincere with you, things ain't too rosy in the oil industry currently due to the downturn in the prices of oil. It's the same story all around the world and even in the US. industries are restructuring and getting leaner by the day. One way many oil majors are doing this is to grow their engineers to be versatile in my areas (e.g. Subsurface, integrity, facilities, etc) while keeping a limited group of core professionals in those areas to provide international support. Tough times require tough measures to survive. Even some of my folks in US with PhD are finding it hard to get into the upstream industry. Things are projected to get better next year though.
But does that mean recruitment is zero? Absolutely not, a few people are still getting recruited by the day just that the numbers are getting fewer and the terms of employment are getting more flexible by the day.

With a background in petroleum engineering, I do not know how an MSc in petroleum geoscience can be of any help. I would suggest you drop that outrightly. It will be difficult if not outrightly impossible to sell a BSc pet engineering + MSc petroleum geoscience except you have some valuable experience spanning both areas which is also almost infeasible. It's even relatively easier to sell the reverse (i.e.BSc geoscience + MSc Pet Engrg).

MSc in pipeline engineering, though good, limits you to only pipeline specialization and is not a core oil and gas discipline in IOCs (we have pipeline engineers though but not usually many). You find them more in servicing companies.

Having said that, I would advise you to delve into safety engineering, which is not exactly Occupational Health and Safety but close to it. Process Safety and Risk engineering is still quite technical and versatile in other fields. A risk engineer can work in any segment of the oil industry and can also adapt to other industries. Also cross check if it is possible for you to have a MSc in process engineering (though you may need to enroll for some undergrad course in the duration of the programme)

One more advice IF you plan to study outside Nigeria - it is better you avoid UK. Consider more friendly countries like Canada, US or even Australia where you can be allowed to gain work experience or get quality internships.

Many thanks for the reply brother, I really appreciate.

I'll be doing the program in Nigeria as I have no means or resources to travel outside at the moment, occupational health & safety is the only of such program currently obtainable in Nigeria, although if I chose to go for that option plan to add as many certifications, and skills as possible to make me a technical safety engineer, is this possible?

For the pipeline option, I know it's going to limit me somehow, but the program being offered by offshore technology Institute where I plan to do the program, would also groom the graduate for other skills in offshore management and subsea, I also plan to further develop myself in related areas, things like facility management, flow assurance, non destructive testing, welding inspection and the rest, how do you see this path too?

As for employment, I mustn't work for the multinationals, really I just want to be good enough to thrive, not because I'm not ambitious, but one has to be realistic and every other thing is favour, but who wouldn't want the best?

Lastly, I would also want an option that would give me multidisciplinary competency, options in the downstream and even the industrial/manufacturing sector, and further in entrepreneurship.

I'll appreciate if you take the above into consideration and advise me again, thank you very much.

Great job @ Xfire. Happy new year
Please I'm at a crossroad, I need urgent advice. I'm to choose between 2 offers of fully funded training either as an NDT technician ASNT Level II in PT, MT, UT &RT or to be trained in Petroleum geosciences, exploration, drilling, AutoCAD and some other softwares in the oil & gas industry. I studied petroleum and Gas Engineering as my 1st degree.
Please I need to know which is more versatile and lucrative on the longrun considering the present situation of things in the oil and gas sector.
I'll appreciate your advice and contributions.

Since he is considering an engineering discipline, let him consider the traditional engineering courses such as mechanical , chemical or electrical engineering. The traditional engineering disciplines remain the most versatile disciplines not only in the oil industry but in other industries as well. Bioresources engineering is relatively new and is very much restrictive for now. Bioresources does not have anything to do with crude oil and natural gas but rather deals with renewable energy sources such as bioethanol, biogas, wind, solar, etc. However, this advice is only applicable if he is truly passionate about engineering. Geology will also restrict him to only certain industries such as oil and gas which is already saturated with many qualified geology graduates still looking for opportunities.

However, advise him not to be obsessed with the oil industry. Instead he should study a course he is really passionate about. Oil and gas is certainly not the end of life, as one can live a fulfilled and even richer life doing something else. There is absolutely no guarantee he will end up in the oil and gas industry irrespective course studied.

Good day sir, based on your quote above,

*Bioresources engineering is relatively new and is very much restrictive for now*

Sir may I know how Bio resource Engineering is now after that post you made 3years ago

Thanks in anticipation.

Please I need advice. I Am a fresh graduate of computer science with 2:1. What should I go into
Barywhyte:
For IT related opportunities, I think it is not just enough to have degree in computer science. Most critical IT infrastrutures around the world includin those of oil and gas now run on open source tech. I think if one is to easily break into oil and gas in IT related areas, consider switchin over to text-mode computing, chosing your desired unix variants. Right major multinationals in US and canada are migrating their IT facilities from other unix variants to Linux.

Hi Xfire, thanks for this amazing thread. I am in a dilemma: I am a graduate of EE (2.1), graduated in 2015. Because of the nature of the Nigerian labor market, I took a job in Digital Marketing because I already had good experience in it. I have been working in Digital Marketing for 2 years now and I'm now a manager in one of the top e-commerce companies in Nigeria earning 230k monthly. Im thinking of going back to Engineering specifically Instrumentation and Control in Oil & Gas and so I want to do the 450k GIL CAE course. My problem is I'm not sure that I will get a good O&G I&C job immediately after I do it, Please advise me so that I don't waste the money. Thanks.

There are simply too many safety professionals itching to join the oil industry. When supply is higher than number required, then you really do not have much demand. Many see safety as one of the easiest way to break into the industry, thus there is abundance of professionals with valid safety certifications. Besides, any experienced oil and gas worker can easily move to safety.

Petroleum economist is not a highly demanded role to the best of my knowledge. I wouldn't advise anyone to go for it cos it doesn't offer any specialized and unique skill. With sufficient experience, a petroleum engineer can easily be a petroleum economist.

Accountants are in hot demand all over the world, particularly tax professionals.
Hello sir. I've read your posts all through and love the way you clarify things. I have a question i will like to ask. Please, I need your candid opinion. As a grad of Accounting, just got an offer MSc Oil and Gas Accounting and Finance from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. I really like to take a career path in oil and gas industry or plan B, major in finance.

What are my chances in terms job opportunities in UK?
