Boko Haram: Why Nigerian Troops Entered Cameroun – DHQ by activatenigeria: 8:16am On Aug 26, 2014
Defence Headquarters, DHQ, has explained the circumstances that led to the entering of Nigerian soldiers into neighbouring Cameroun.

Contrary to some foreign media reports that the troops fled the country for fear of Boko Haram, the DHQ said that “a sustained battle between the troops and the terrorists around the borders with Cameroun saw the Nigerian troops charging through the borders in a tactical manoeuvers. Eventually, they found themselves on Camerounian soil. Being allies, the normal protocol of managing such incident demanded that the troops submit their weapons in order to assure the friendly country that they were not on a hostile mission.

“Following necessary discussions between Nigerian and Camerounian military authorities, the issues have been sorted out. Subsequently, the troops are on their way back to join their unit in Nigeria. The reference to the incidence as a defection is therefore not appropriate, considering the discussion between the two countries’ military leadership and the series of contacts with the soldiers who have confirmed that they are safe.

“Meanwhile, troops are repelling a group of terrorists who are trying to enter the country through Gamborou Ngala. A group of them who fizzled into the town are being pursued,” it said.

According to the media reports, some 480 Nigerian soldiers allegedly fled into Cameroun following fierce fighting with Boko Haram terrorists, who reportedly recaptured Gamboru-Ngala, a major township on the border between Nigeria and Cameroun.

The reports claimed that Army spokesman, Lt.-Col. Didier Badjek, said the soldiers had been disarmed and were now being accommodated in schools, stressing that the terrorists’ advancement in territorial grab of Gamboru-Ngala made them to have firm control of some parts of Borno State, including Gwoza, parts of Yobe and Adamawa states.

Among towns and areas alleged to be under the sect’s control are Gwoza and Marte in Borno State, Buni Yadi in Yobe State, and Madagali in Adamawa State.
