yemaldo:
U just proved that ur parent shouldn't have sent u to school

my parents did not send me to any school.
They enjoyed the liberty of drinking from Baba Awolowo's fount of free education.

But Awolowo is the first Nigerian coup plotter.
Nobody can take that distinction away from him.
Do you have any distinction in your life?
in your career?
How will you feel if it is taken away from you?
and given to another person?
You would feel bad, wont you?
I will be be around and allow you to suffer such injustice.
So also i have to defend Baba awo's record.

Gowon is looking 4 a way to apologize to ndi-igbo but human ego is making it difficult for him to do so,this is why he always visit alaigbo more than any former nigerian head of state in history. The question now is can gowon confess his involvement in the genocide killings of innocent women and children before he join his maker?we knew he is trying to reconcile but he is not doing it in the right way, the igbos"work through the shadow of death,we fear no evil, the same gowon that beg hausa/fulanis blood suckers,he begged them to stop killing his people they should remember he fought and sacrifice able young men from middle-belt and yorubaland those who challenge and fight biafrans which they lost half a million soldiers, but just to allow hausa/fulani kanuris to thief and milk what does not belong to them. This is why the nigerian ill equip and ill trained soldiers started killing innocent women and children just like they are now doing in the NE right now, having a taste of your own medicine both hausa, fulani, kanuri, tiv, berem, idoma etc from chukwu Abiama cool

onoja12: am amazed, are you denying the fact that major kaduna uzogu plotted an all easterners coup,or you are trying to deny that the first coup in Nigeria where plotted by igbo people,or are you trying to deny that the first military head of state in Nigeria is an igbo man, what brings awolowo into the matter, yes he may have given some backing but i can assure you,he had no direct active role in the coup because i can remember he was penciled
down to be killed in that coup, before the Yoruba officers involved brought him in.like i said study with an open mind, not a tribalistic heart,or bad blood,if the youth can do away with the mess the old men have brought on them by there greed,Nigeria would be a great nation,if not the greatest

Hate kills. It is good that you said an all easterners coup. Perhaps you were not born in 1966 but you can at least read. Only two of the five coupists came from east. If you are looking at percentage then sixty percent of five planners were from old western region. But it suits Nigeria to rewrite history.

meforyou1: if not that ojukwu released awolowo from prison and awolowo turned to a back-biting saboteur. Don't forget to read achebe's "there was a country".
Ojukwu never released Awo from prison, Gowon did. Awolowo was a prisoner of the Nigeria government held in the eastern region, so ojukwu does not have the power to unilaterally release him.

Awo was charged with Treasonable felony in November 1962 and sentenced in September 1963

In March 1966, Awo wrote to Ironsi from prison asking to be released but was ignored by Ironsi. Between January 1966 and July 1966, Ironsi was Head of State while Ojukwu was Governor of the Eastern region.

Gowon was sworn-in in the evening of July 30 1966 but made his announcement on August 1st.

Obafemi Awolowo was released from prison on the 8th of August 1966; exactly 1 week after Gowon's ascension.

Now talking about Achebe's memoir, that's his personal opinion. Socrates was right when he said that “what any man is saying or seeing is often a factor of where that man is sitting or standing at any given point” I will concede to Achebe that he probably drew his conclusion based on where he was sitting or standing when he made his observation, But there is more to what really happened in that war than the totality of what Chinua Achebe has stated in that book.

Have you paused to consider what Azikiwe's role was in all these brouhaha? He also sided with Gowon at the most critical phase of the war. See there's enough blame to go round if we want to be realistic.

Reading Achebe's book alone which of course is bound to lean towards the igbo tribe is not justifiable. You need to read from independent writers too before you can draw conclusions.

meforyou1: Even Japan, who didn't commit up to one-tenth of the war crimes gowon, obasanjo, awolowo and adekunle committed, has apologised for their 2nd world war atrocities. Gowon is just postponing the evil day, because one day he, his children or his grand children must apologise to the igbos for the genocide he committed against us. We are igbos, we never forget. And so we say, never again shall such evil be meted against us without a ten-fold retaliation.

my friend please i am confused cause it is clearly states that it is only one Yoruba man,of the six and the igbo somehow where the once going to kill northers while they immediately airlifted azikiwe out of the country.so please ,lets not make an issue,i have come to the understand that its all greed, even the civil war too was simply greed.so lets not go there i think honestly the igbo people should be asking Nigerias for forgiveness and not add more smoke to the fire that they started in the first place

if Ojukwu does not have the power to release Awo as you claimed, where did he get power to release Banjo, Nzeogwu and the rest who were prison mates of Awolowo at same calabar prison.

MailSA: Pls don't quote people wrongly! Mr Nwodo said "I acknowledge the presence of former head of state Gen Yakubu Gowon, I remembered how he gave us seats after the civil war when we were sitting on blocks to learn in our classrooms in his bid to recocile all agrieved." That means Gowon provided seats for them to stop sitting on blocks. Stop inciting people!

Didn't you find it odd that all those (prisoners) ojukwu released from prison were immediately conscripted into

that is not the point.the question is whether he has the power to release those inmates including awo or not. some of you continue to live in denial that he had no power to release federal prisoners in the east. Since you seems to agree with me he freed those soldiers who were awo.'s jail mate there is no point for argument. .

Are you aware that Awolowo's release came much earlier before those boys? Because now you are making it seems they were released at the same time.
If Gowon didn't made the order for him to be released, would he have gone to meet Awo at the airport to welcome him with the now famous statement "we need you for the wealth of your experience"? Wouldn't he have ordered for him to be re-arrested? Or Awo himself won't even dare step his leg in lagos.

Ojukwu only released banjo, nzeogwo and co but that took place in the heat of the confrontations before the civil war. By then, the eastern region was already acting as if its not part of Nigeria. So he needed those boys to fight for him. Even then banjo could not return to his base because he was still not cleared of his charges so he joined ojukwu in the state house at Enugu.

This is why I said people should read from independent writers because they will say the truth as it is without taking sides.

Which ones is "treasonable felony"?
Sisi mi, call a spade a spade.
Baba Awolowo is a strong man, he plotted coup.
He even tried it again in 1988.

Please you people should stop defending gowon. He is the one that caused all the trouble and started the civil war.
He is the biggest sponsor of Biafra.
What Gowon did is that during the Aburi accord, he gave ojukwu money and tactics to kill nigeria.
Yes, he was a sponsor of biafra.
That is why when he got back to lagos, Muritala rejected the Aburi accord.
And Ojukwu did not forgive Gowon for the double-cross.

NaijirianKing: Wrong... he was from the Western or MidWestern Region... go learn some history before you speak on such a topic. Igbo are found in NC, SE, & SS. And in those days Delta State was part of Bendel, which was part of the West, then was carved out to create the MidWest.

Geez! you reason like a kid. sorry, no umbrage intended.

Whilst i do agree with you that ojukwu did release the soldiers like banjo, nzegwou but as they were thrown in prison by the federal govt, it's obvious that if they ever set foot on any part of the federation under the immediate control of the federal govt, they would be instantly thrown back into prison. Also, those prisoners were released at seperate times, awo on aug 8 1966 whilst the soldiers were released in 1967 when the civil war was becoming more of a certainty.

Moreover, as at august 1966, both the warden at the calabar prison and ojukwu were still drawing their salaries from the federal govt and gowon and as such take their orders from the HOS.

Ojukwu as a regional governor can only release federal prisoners INTO his region but not out of his region.

A lt col over rides the instruction of a major General who happen to be igbo, you have your history very mixed up,we are talking of major General agu irosi time which predates Gowon, like i said they always tell history upside down to defend evil deeds

NaijirianKing: The first coup attempt was by Awo, who was jailed in the East. He was supposed to be executed, but Ojukwu had mercy on him, as Ojukwu was in charge of the then Eastern region.

Ojukwu pitied Awo as they were both victims of an unfair system, Ojukwu allowed Awo to live in exchange for pulling the West of of Nigeria and peacefully allowing all regions to develop at their own pace. But Awo was offered a position in the Naij gov't and thus broke the agreement he had made with Ojukwu.

Although Awo always wanted to pull the West out of Naij, as he saw believed his ethnic superior to others, he decided to keep his group within Naij so he could be rewarded with the highest civilian position in Gowon's gov't.

But, yes, he was a civilian, and tried a coup 3 years before the civil war, and yes he was jailed for this. So, a civilian (Awo) tried and failed to remove the gov't he saw as holding the western Region back, but he failed.
