Top Ten Most Expensive Private Jets And Their Owners by Mykel4God(m): 7:44pm On Aug 29, 2014
Back in the golden age of flying, it was such a special (and costly) adventure that very few experienced it. It was an experience for the wealthy and celebrities. As aviation technology grew after WWII, jets started to come in all varieties - big and small. Suddenly as the decades flew by, traveling by jet became more accessible to the general public .
No longer only the domain of the rich and famous, millions of passengers each year join the crowds packed in the coach section of ever evolving jets. Just because the rest of us got in on it, the rich and famous were never likely to give up flying - they just moved up into first class. For some, the only answer was to invest in their own aircraft and crews, ready to shuttle them around the globe in the manner to which they'd become accustomed.
Whether the jet is big or small, it hardly seems to matter to those with the cash to buy them. What does matter is that they are top of the line, luxuriously appointed, and private. No coach here. The following gallery shows what are believed to be, as of May, the top ten most expensive private jets in the world.
The list of owners is hardly the complete list as there are plenty of elusive celebrities, businessmen and world leaders out there who would rather not talk about their flying palaces. That's ok; we'll enjoy this gallery of some of the few private jet owners who aren't afraid to show off their aircraft. We think these folks will likely never come across the crew from Airplane Repo, but everyday new ambitious owners are buying and leasing the latest luxury aircraft so you never know...
[Editor's Note: Most of the images of the planes in this gallery are provided by the manufacturers and other sources. Actual images of the private owner's jets with identifying marks can be hard to come by - and would be a no-no to post! These owners love their privacy!
Plus, for all the aviators and airplane fans out there, you'll know that "The Numbers" provided on each plane are the factory specs. For the rest of us, that means a few things. The very wealthy can afford to change bits and pieces on their planes to change performance. Additionally, all aircraft have varied performance depending on weather, altitude, cargo, passengers and the like. We're just giving you the showroom floor story.
The Plane:
The Dassault Falcon 900, valued at $33M is owned by Sergio Mantegazza a Swiss businessman.
Why It's Cool:
This plane is fast and efficient. According to the manufacturer, it flies 4,750nm non-stop and can access airports at high altitudes in hot weather.
It uses 50-60% less fuel and dramatically reduces its carbon footprint.Three engines make it unique in its class, and is what makes the thrust that powers this baby more centered, which helps lower the speeds needed for critical performance on short fields (that's take-off and landing to you and I).
The jet also is also specially fitted with mechanics that create for a low drag wing and along with "winglets" makes them extremely efficient.
The Numbers:
Power comes from three Honeywell TFE731-5BR-1C turbofan engines with 21.13 kN (4,750 lbf) thrust each. Its maximum speed is reported at Mach 0.84-0.87; cruise speed is 950 km/h (513 knots, 590 mph) at 36,000ft (10,970 m) (Mach 0.85). With 7 passengers its range is 7,400 km (3,995 nm, 4,598 mi). It has a service ceiling: 15,500 m (51,000 ft).

THE PLANE:
The Embraer EMB190BJ Lineage 1000 valued at $40.95M is owned by Jorge Vergara,a Mexican businessman.
WHY IT'S COOL:
This plane, designed and built in Brazil is based on a larger passenger version. The "private" version has added fuel tanks in the cargo hold which can double the jet's range and fly by wire controls (that's computer assisted controls) to improve performance. It also has a larger fuselage cross section that others in its class which means more space.
Speaking of space, the manufacturer will tell you the inside can be divided into up to 5 sections including an optional bedroom, washroom with running water, and a walk-in cargo area at the rear. How Mr. Vergara has his appointed, we will likely never know.
THE NUMBERS:
The Lineage 1000 is powered by 2 General Electric CF34-10E turbofan engines, with 82.3 kN (18,500 lbf) thrust each. The manufacturer reports a range of 4,400 nm (8,149 km), high-speed cruise at Mach 0.82, take off distance of 6,135 ft (1,870 m). The maximum operating altitude is 41,000 ft (12,497 m).

THE PLANE:
Bill Gates reportedly owns a Dassault Falcon 7X valued at $41M.
WHY IT'S COOL:
The designers of this jet decided to fully create every piece of this aircraft as a virtual model in order to optimize performance and spot challenges before it even got to the production stage.
Like its sibling the Falcon 900, it is designed to operate in high and hot conditions thanks to its three engine design. It can take off at a steep angle and it can land slower - which not surprisingly - is safer. At typical landing weights its approach speed is only 104 knots and can stop in approximately 2,070 ft.
THE NUMBERS:
The 7x is powered by 3 Pratt & Whitney Canada PW307A turbofans, 28.46 kN (6,400 lbf) each. It reported has a maximum speed of 953 km/h (515 knots, 593 mph); cruising speed is 900 km/h (486 knots, 559 mph). With 8 passengers it has a range of 11,000 km (5,940 nm); its service ceiling is 14935 m (49,000 ft).

THE PLANE:
Valued at $47.7M both Celine Dion and Oprah Winfrey own a Bombardier BD-700 Global Express.
WHY IT'S COOL:
The Global Express is modeled after Bombardier’s passenger “Regional Jet.” For the private version the manufacturers updated the wing with a 35° sweep and winglets, plus a new T-tail which makes reduces drag and increased efficiency. The owners have to love that the Global Express can fly intercontinental ranges without refueling (e.g. New York–Tokyo) or between most two points in the world with only one stop.
It operates with a flight crew of two plus one or two flight attendants. Typical arrangements seat from eight to 18 passengers. It can be fitted with a galley, crew rest station, work stations, a conference/lounge/dining area, a stateroom with a fold out bed, toilet, shower and wardrobe. A high density 30 seat corporate shuttle configuration offered. You want it? They’ll arrange it.
THE NUMBERS:
The aircraft is powered by two 66.1 kN (14,750lb) BMW RollsRoyce BR-710A-220 turbofans with FADEC. It reports a high speed cruising speed of 935km/h (505kt) or Mach 0.88, normal cruising speed 904km/h (488kt) or Mach 0.85, long range cruising speed 850km/h (459kt) or Mach 0.80. The range is 6,325 nm (7,080 mi, 11,390 km) and the service ceiling is 51,000ft (15,500 m).

THE PLANE:
Valued at $59.9M, both Lakshmi Mittal, an Indian businessman and Phillip Green, British businessman own a Gulfstream G-550.
WHY IT'S COOL:
Less than two weeks after it entered service, a G550 flew nonstop from Seoul, South Korea, to Orlando, Fla., covering the 7,301-nautical-mile (13,521 km) distance in 14.5 hours and setting a city pair record. It would go on to establish 40 city-pair records in its first five years of service. So she’s a fast aircraft.
It’s nice for the pilots too. The G550 has a "PlaneView" cockpit which consists of 4 Honeywell DU-1310 EFIS screens, a Gulfstream-designed cursor control system, and an Enhanced Vision System (EVS). EVS is an infrared camera that displays an image of the view in front of the camera on a head up display. The system permits the aircraft to land in lower-visibility instrument meteorological conditions.
The cabin aboard the G550 combines productivity with exceptional comfort. It features up to four distinct living areas, three temperature zones, and a choice of 12 floor-plan configurations with seating for up to 18 passengers.
THE NUMBERS:
Powered by enhanced Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engines, the G550 has a range of 6,750 nm (12,501 km) at Mach 0.80 and a high-speed cruise capability of Mach 0.87. It has service ceiling of 51,000 ft (15,500 m).

THE PLANE:
Owned by Vijay Mallya an Indian businessman, his Airbus 319 Corporate Jet is valued at $80.7M.
WHY IT'S COOL:
O.K. you guys recognize the name Airbus; you’ve probably been on one. Well, imagine what you saw there under your private domain! The A319 is just a bit different from its big sibling the A320. It has a shortened fuselage, so while it’s not as long it has the same cross-section as the big boys. It’s the widest single-aisle fuselage on the market and allows for passenger cabin adaptability with six standard layouts offering seating from 10 to 39 passengers.
Advanced navigation technology developed for the A320 is also available on the A319. The A319 shares the same fly-by-wire computer flight controls and state-of-the-art cockpit as the other A320 family members. Plus, in 2012 the company introduced large wingtip devices called “Sharklets” (winglets on other aircraft) which help recover the vortex energy that can be lost at the end of a wingtip. For the A319, it can provide up to 4% reduction in fuel costs.
If your millionaire is after additional fuel savings (and who isn’t?) the aircraft can also accommodate an A320neo new engine option. This option is expected to deliver fuel savings of up to 15%, along with double-digit reductions in CO2 and NOx emissions, additional range and lower operating costs. Plus, the A319's containerized cargo hold means auxiliary fuel tanks can be easily loaded and unloaded, allowing flexibility to reconfigure the aircraft for varying payload/range requirements.
THE NUMBERS:
The A319 is normally powered by either two CFM International CFM56-5 series or two IAE V2500 series engines. The specs include a max cruising speed of Mach 0.82 and a max altitude 41,000ft. Range with 10 passengers is 11,650km (6300nm); rate of climb 23min to 37,000ft.

THE PLANE:
While many of us have traveled on this jet, it was surely with a lot of other passengers. However, Roman Abramovich, a Russian businessman and Google Founder Larry Page both own one, each valued at $118M.
WHY IT'S COOL:
According to the company, the Boeing 767 family is a complete family of airplanes providing maximum versatility in the 200- to 300-seat market. The versatile design allows customers to select four, five, six, seven or eight abreast seating to best suit their operational requirements. Or for a private owner, the inside of a 767 could be an interior designer’s dream.
All three passenger models are offered in a variety of takeoff weights, which allow operators to choose only the amount of design weight needed to satisfy their requirements. These offer corresponding design ranges from 5,625 nautical miles (10,415 km) to nearly 6,600 nautical miles (12,223 km). Long raked wingtips improve aerodynamic efficiency; they are also made from increased gauge aluminum with thicker spars to improve stability.
THE NUMBERS:
The 767 is powered by either two 281.6kN (63,300lb) Pratt & Whitney PW4062 turbofans, or two 276.2kN (62,100lb) General Electric CF6-80C2B7F1s or 282.5kN (63,500lb) CF6-80C2B8Fs. The design cruising speed 0.80 Mach, and design range at max takeoff weight with max passengers is 10,343km (5580nm) with PW4062s and 10,418km (5625nm) with CF6-80C2B8Fs.

Another jet that may be familiar to all of us, especially for long haul flights, there are actually some people who own a version of the Boeing 747 as private planes. Worth $153M, Joseph Lau a real estate investor owns one.
WHY IT'S COOL:
It’s a 747 guys. Austin Powers had one – need we say more? Well yes, we do actually. This is a 747-8 VIP jet with a slightly longer fuselage than the normal 747 giving it more than 465m2 [5,000ft2] of cabin space, which allows any private owner incomparable luxury and operational flexibility. They come with a new SkyLoft area, which is located above the main cabin between the upper deck and tail of the 747-8 VIP, provides up to 81.8m2 (880ft2) of cabin space and gives owners the opportunity to create unique personal suites, private offices and recreational spaces.
THE NUMBERS:
The 747-8 is powered by 4 GEnx-2B67 engines each with a thrust of 66,500 lbf (296 kN). Reports put cruising speed at 35,000 ft (11,000 m) varying between Mach 0.855 (570 mph, 495 knots, 917 km/h) and Mach 0.845 (564 mph, 490 kn, 908 km/h). Maximum speed at 35,000 ft (11,000 m) is Mach 0.92 (614 mph, 533 kn, 988 km/h). THE PLANE:
This Airbus A380 performs a fly-by at the Singapore Airshow and is in service in many airline fleets across the globe.
Prince Alawaleed bin Talal, Saudi businessman and investor also happens to own one. The value is approximately $300M topping the list of the Top Ten Most Expensive Private Planes.
WHY IT'S COOL:
The double-deck A380 is the world’s largest commercial aircraft flying today. It has two full-length passenger levels with true widebody dimensions: a main deck and an upper deck, y linked by fixed stairs forward and aft. Generally the A380 seats 525 passengers. What a Prince does with his we aren’t sure.
With a new wing design and composite materials accounting for 25 per cent of its structural weight, the A380 is a much more efficient aircraft all around. By producing only about 75 grams of CO2 per passenger kilometre, the A380 minimizes its greenhouse gas emissions.
THE NUMBERS:
Powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 or Engine Alliance GP7200 engines, the A380-800 has a design range of 15,700 kilometres (8,500 nmi; 9,800 mi), sufficient to fly from New York to Hong Kong.
