Anambra State government yesterday shut down all
the 66 major markets across the state as part of
activities marking the ceremony organized by the All
Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA to persuade
President Goodluck Jonathan to seek re-election in
the 2015 general election.
Sunday Sun gathered that all major markets
including road side ones were shut down yesterday,
as traders were urged to remain in their houses or
come out enmass to participate in the mega rally
held at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
From the Main market, Ochanja, Mgbuka, Ose-
Okwodu, New Parts and Building materials markets
to all other major markets in Nnewi and Awka cities,
shops were put under lock and key as roads were all
deserted.
However, only few persons were seen on the roads in
the commercial city of Onitsha wearing uniforms
with different inscriptions and photograph of Mr.
President, and other insignia belonging to the All
Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. Speaking on the
development, the Chairman of the Anambra State
Amalgamated Traders’ Association, AMATAS, Chief
Okwudili Ezenwankwo said the markets were shut by
the union to allow the traders participate in the rally
to urge the President to present himself for re-
election.
Chief Ezenwankwo said the idea was to give the
traders sense of belonging to take active part in
making necessary critical decisions when it mattered
most, especially as it regards the future of the nation.
“We shut down all the 66 major markets in the state
so that traders will join our Governor, Chief Willie
Obiano in urging President Goodluck Jonathan to
please present himself and seek a re-election come
2015 general election to continue with the
transformation agenda he has started.
“Traders are unified in the sense that Mr. President
has done well and irrespective of our various political
affiliations, the traders decided to be part of this
critical event to persuade the President to accept the
call from Nigerians to continue his good works,” he
said.
