Ray Power FM - Nigeria's first private radio station - is 20 today.

Before Ray Power, 24-hour broadcasting on radio or TV looked like an impossibility. Today 24-hour broadcasting looks normal and commonplace.

With Ray Power, we stopped getting only what the federal or state governments fed us as news.

Before Ray Power, Nigerian music was "local" music that was. treated like other "local" products, while music by Michael Jackson, Shaba Ranks, Queen Latifah and even Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Awilo Longomba was "international" and treated as premium. But through the insistence of the founder, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, on promotion of local music, and the persistence of Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye, all that has changed. Today, Nigerians care little about the music of Beyonce or Justin Bieber. or any foreign musician. Nigerian music even dominates the African airwaves.

There is no denying that Ray Power has made a difference in the nation.

There are also some aspects in which the station (as well as the DAAR Group) needs to improve upon.

Congratulations to Ray Power, Dokpesi and all the staff - past and present - that have contributed to the radio station's success story.
