1,000 Igbo corpses await clearance in Lagos mortuaries —Ohanaeze

Posted by: Innocent Duru in Featured, News 4 days ago

No fewer than 1,000 corpses of Igbo people are awaiting clearance in various mortuaries in Lagos State, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in the state, Chief Fabian Onwughalu, has said.

He blamed the development on the Federal Government’s ban on inter-state movement of corpses in the country.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khairu Al-Hassan, announced the Federal Government‘s decision at a meeting held at African House, Government House, Kano recently.

He said it was part of the means the government is exploiting  to curtail the spread of the disease in the country.

Bemoaning the plight of the deceased and their relations, Chief Onwughalu said:  ”As I am talking to you now, there are over 1000 dead bodies of Igbo people waiting at various morgues only here in Lagos State for movement to their homeland.

”The ugly development has serious effect on the families of the deceased because in Igbo land, we believe that the moment a late family member is buried, the pains of losing him will gradually fade away. But in a situation where you keep the body of a deceased family member unnecessarily, the pains will be increasing.

“The Federal Government should rescind the decision or decentralise the authority.”

Asked what the body was doing to address the problem, he said: “At the highest level, we believe there are consultations going on. But we are worried that it is taking too long to yield fruits.”

He added that the sole authority vested in the minister to give clearance to bereaved families before they can take their dead relations home is fraught with bottlenecks that cause untold hardship for the people. He described the process as a violation of the Igbo culture.

To enable bereaved families take the corpses of their  members home for burial, he advised that “the Federal Government should authorise other government health officers and doctors to issue certificates to bereaved families to enable them carry the remains of their deceased ones home for burial.

“If the authority to issue certificate is decentralised such that federal health centres and teaching hospitals would be able to attend to bereaved families and give them certificates within a short time, it will enable our people to convey the remains of their beloved ones to their ancestral homes in line with the traditions of their people.”

mayor,
make una just burn the corpses.
they will be a danger to public safety in the next one month.
you know this ebola spreads by geometric proportion.
one person can infect 20 people. and it takes about 21 days to show.
right now August nigeria has about 200 cases
by the end of september that would be 200 X 20 = 4000 cases (with 50% mortality).
by the end of October that would be 4000 X 20 = 80,000 cases
november is 80,000 X 20 = 1,600,000 that is one million lagosians!

by december, nobody will be able to keep count.
so now you have 1000 corpses, just make bonfire.
you can share the ashes.

cheesy grin grin
No mind them Jare !
These people and their stubborness!

They should go and read the history of this present outbreak. Its the burial rites that contributed to the ease of spread of the ebola!
Even Sawyer that brought it to Nigeria caught it from the burial of his sister.
FG should on no account allow any corpse to move until this epidemic is over!

Why can't these people be reasonable for once?

Are they deaf,or blind to see the current health challenge going on lately in our beloved country?

So because of their selfish customary aim,so many lives should be put to danger, and they will turn around shouting about the incompetence of the administration.

The corpse should be buried in place of death,or cremated,if they can't be buried there.

He should have stopped at advising the government to decentralise the issuance of the necessary certificate(s). That makes sense, Suggesting, in thesame breath, that the government should cancel it altogether dosent.

We have to respect Ibo tradition here...cant just burn them.

Typically when an ibo dies on foreign soil it takes two to three months in morgue before his loved ones collect enough money to transport the body home. Then his wife must go through the ritual of shaving head and when the body arrives and is washed she must drink the waste water.

If no one claims the bodies we will declare them abandoned and invite Obiano to make arrangements to receive them at Onitsha.

And very soon, the morgues would be overflowing with corpses. lipsrsealed

If we are really concerned with containing ebola, best bet, do an autopsy on each corpse and release to the family if it's a non-ebola death. It's no brainer. What's the point piling up corpses? Waste of space and resources. undecided

All these directors of this and that, I sometimes wonder if they're ever thinking. The goverment is just as clueless. Dumbos!

1000 bodies they should just cremate their bodies and shear the ashes to their families let them go and bury the ashes. We don't know what killed them we can't take any chances of bringing more Ebola into this country, we can't put many lives in danger because of people who are dead and have nothing to do with the living again.
