meforyou1: you think igbos are like you that don't have culture? No matter how long it takes, we will wait, and those corpses must go home
see your shallow thinking,so because of your yeye custom, and culture, the public must be put at risk. Do you think you made any sense with what you wrote up there?

Whoever that's dead,is dead.

We have to respect Ibo tradition here...cant just burn them.

Typically when an ibo dies on foreign soil it takes two to three months in morgue before his loved ones collect enough money to transport the body home. Then his wife must go through the ritual of shaving head and when the body arrives and is washed she must drink the waste water.

If no one claims the bodies we will declare them abandoned and invite Obiano to make arrangements to receive them at Onitsha.

Most customs and cultures need to adapt to modern times especially those ones that pose serious health risks (to humans). Why would any sane person force make someone drink water used in washing a corpse? Of what use is FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) ? And other pertinent issues in some cultures that must be done away with.

tit: mayor,
make una just burn the corpses.
they will be a danger to public safety in the next one month.
you know this ebola spreads by geometric proportion.
one person can infect 20 people. and it takes about 21 days to show.
right now August nigeria has about 200 cases
by the end of september that would be 200 X 20 = 4000 cases (with 50% mortality).
by the end of October that would be 4000 X 20 = 80,000 cases
november is 80,000 X 20 = 1,600,000 that is one million lagosians!

by december, nobody will be able to keep count.
so now you have 1000 corpses, just make bonfire.
you can share the ashes.

I feel for the families but i couldnt help laughing at ur last statement

Test the bodies for cause of death and if they are clean release it to the families for burial. the family can cover the cost for the test. So because of ebola families should be denied their right of paying last respect to their loved ones or turn to hindu's over night and start cremating corpse. Government should be reasonable if not lagos morgues will soon start overflowing and they will have a crisis on their hands.

MayorofLagos: 1,000 Igbo corpses await clearance in Lagos mortuaries —Ohanaeze

Posted by: Innocent Duru in Featured, News 4 days ago

No fewer than 1,000 corpses of Igbo people are awaiting clearance in various mortuaries in Lagos State, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in the state, Chief Fabian Onwughalu, has said.

He blamed the development on the Federal Government’s ban on inter-state movement of corpses in the country.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khairu Al-Hassan, announced the Federal Government‘s decision at a meeting held at African House, Government House, Kano recently.

He said it was part of the means the government is exploiting  to curtail the spread of the disease in the country.

Bemoaning the plight of the deceased and their relations, Chief Onwughalu said:  ”As I am talking to you now, there are over 1000 dead bodies of Igbo people waiting at various morgues only here in Lagos State for movement to their homeland.

”The ugly development has serious effect on the families of the deceased because in Igbo land, we believe that the moment a late family member is buried, the pains of losing him will gradually fade away. But in a situation where you keep the body of a deceased family member unnecessarily, the pains will be increasing.

“The Federal Government should rescind the decision or decentralise the authority.”

Asked what the body was doing to address the problem, he said: “At the highest level, we believe there are consultations going on. But we are worried that it is taking too long to yield fruits.”

He added that the sole authority vested in the minister to give clearance to bereaved families before they can take their dead relations home is fraught with bottlenecks that cause untold hardship for the people. He described the process as a violation of the Igbo culture.

To enable bereaved families take the corpses of their  members home for burial, he advised that “the Federal Government should authorise other government health officers and doctors to issue certificates to bereaved families to enable them carry the remains of their deceased ones home for burial.

“If the authority to issue certificate is decentralised such that federal health centres and teaching hospitals would be able to attend to bereaved families and give them certificates within a short time, it will enable our people to convey the remains of their beloved ones to their ancestral homes in line with the traditions of their people.”

I m sure most of them(90%), died before the ebola outbreak. The man should stop raising useless alarm.

The problem you and your friend is suffering from is more deadly than Ebola. To curtail Ebola is more easy than finding prevention or cure for yours. 90% Lagosian ? Pls which cave are you from?

sunnyshayne: I think the number is over exaggerated.

Yeah!

I learnt of one Igbo family that lost their loved one in Lagos recently but due to the restrictions placed on movement of corpses in Nigeria, they decided to smuggle the corpse to the east at night.(their aged mother having warned them not deposit her in a morgue if she dies)

She was strapped on the car seat with her head gear on and her face fully made up with pancake and lipstick.
When you look at her you'll think she was sleeping; and this was how she was brought home and buried the next day.

Every other person may not be this lucky without being caught. smiley

This is an exception to culture. The FG should do whats necessary to safeguard the lives of its citizenry. However, the families of the deceased should be allowed to pay their loved ones the last respect, they can do an autopsy or give them the ashes. As it is now until Ebola is eradicated the living cannot bury the dead the way they used to everyone should understand that

Maybe d geometric spread shld begin frm ur village! U quote like ur ancestors showed u in ur dreams how d fight against d epidemic wld go.

Young man, learn to be optimistic! Nigeria will overcome ebola!
Moreover, u don't hv to cremate all corpses. U only cremate corpses of victims who succumbed to ebola. Any corpse brought in to d morgue will be examined and certified ebola free or ebola strikened!

On a normal circumstance why should a civilised tradition should be dranking corpse water or necessity for hair shaving, this is how epidemic spreads and they blame it on the gods or demand human sacrifice no wonder those white mofos saw this and called us a dark continent or even worse treated us like animals.
