Surely the Transformation Agenda on Agriculture is beginning to yield fruits. Very soon Nigeria will join the ranks of Thailand in the export of Rice.
God bless Nigeria.

Sincere9gerian: The so called terminal operators should wake up and smell the coffin. The ports are for imports AND exports and not just for imports. We also need to create JOBS for our people.

Few days ago, I bought well milled, stone free, full bag (50 kg) Abakiliki rice for only N7,200 at Ogbete market. I couldn't believe it when someone told me about it initially until I gave him money to buy it just to confirm.

Likewise, the Nigeria milled Ebony rice, Stallione rice and others are taking over the rice market in Enugu.

Smuggling is definitely a problem because of our mostly ineffective custom officials but as local capacity grows, smuggling will become increasingly less profitable and gradually disappear just like is happening with rice.
You are a patriotic and intelligent nigeria.i like the the aspect you said the port is for import and export.we want to hear nigeria has increased it cocoa, palmoil and groundnut export.

By importing you put citizen of the country you are importing from in jobs at the expense of your own citizen that will be unemployed.

Dangote has already invest 1Billion dollar into rice,in years to come dangote will drive them away.

By 2020 nigeria population will be 200 million, will our port be able to sustain pressure from such import if will dont start to be self employed in food matter today

mejai: hmmn. everybody is talking about rice here and nobody is talking about the fish in d topic. local produced fish is not enough for d nation to consume and available ones r expensive. I perceive lack of fish in our food soonest.
u go to hospital , d doctors would encourage u to abandon meat and hug fish and fruits.... yet fish and fruits r damn expensive Dan d drugs we buy. d government should take it easy with der policies until our local producers r at par wit importers.
They don't want to see it cos they have selective vision. Also, how can u be making Benin richer to the detriment of our economy?

Rawani:

Nigeria has a huge rice sector capable of earning $9 billion, this cannot be achieved without the present restrictions on importations and i agree they should be maintained. Irrigation however is a big issue with rice production as the major problem rice millers in Abakaliki are facing is that they do not produce because there is no irrigation facility in the whole of Ebonyi State. Rice Mills like Stallion which you mentioned have to source their crop from collection centres in the far rice producing states in the northern part of the country, adding transportation costs and other logistics to the final cost. The 'Fadama' irrigation programmes established in the some northern states by past administrations contributed greatly to our overall rice production figures as they provide the crop for these mills and similar efforts should be made by the current administration to make similar efforts so we can be able to fully exploit our potential.
On point! Rice production needs drainage and irrigation. The FG needs to invest in this to encourage and expand rice production. @Topic....I do agree that importation of rice and fish should be restricted and duties raised in stages to allow local production to catch up. But at the same time there need to be crack down on smuggling.....prosecution of smugglerss and confiscation of goods and vehicles should be an effective deterrent.

Am I missing something here or what?? This title is misleading!! why do we bandie statistics in these country with reckless abandon, chaii diaris is Goduo. firstly, the article reported that there was an 80% reduction on fish and rice cargo entering Nigeria through the ports, without a comensurate scarcity in the system BUT THIS IS DUE TO DIVERTION OF NIGERIA BOUND CARGO TO COTONOU PORTS AND SUBSEQUENT SMUGGLING OF SAME GOODS(FISH & RICE) INTO NIGERIA AND NOT BECAUSE LOCAL PRODUCTION HAS REPLACED IMPORTS!! secondly, I have heard a lot about massive local production of rice in Nigeria but why is it so difficult to come by?? All I see every where is gold cap, mama Africa etc with the bold inscription "made in Thailand or produce of India" what is really going on, is it that we produce locally and brand it made in Thailand or what. where the hell is the Abakaliki rice, ofada rice or ebony rice I keep hearing of everyday??

@Lastpage.. All your thesis are well and dandy in a typical economics book. Here in the real world. The Japanese completely banned most things coming into their country until they achieved an equal level. China did the same. India did the same. You wonder why the people that wrote the economics book you are alluding to are also banning agricultural products where they do not have competitive advantage.
Every nation bans be it through tariffs or whatever to restrict products in their country.

One wonders why its a problem doing so here.
We are sufficient in cement because of bans that saw the rise of Dangoto or we will still be at the mercy of Greece.

Thanks and be well

anonimi: @ lastpage,

The problem of inflated food costs is the fact that there are too many people who receive too much money for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Thus the classical definition of inflation applies to our country- too much money chasing after too few goods.
How much does a LGA Councillor receive guaranteed monthly
What of State Assembly legisLOOTER as well as his Abuja NASS counterpart who is a SINator and representaTHIEF who also collect mega-millions without producing any Bill to address the multiple legal loopholes in our constitution or bring issues concerning their constituents whom they REPRESENT to the attention of the executive i.e. governor/commissioner & president/minister The wage DISPARITY therefore discourages the underpaid civil servants & other real sector workers from doing a good job & producing goods + services as they are clearly demotivated sad

Meanwhile your proposal of gradual phase-in while it seems good in theory may not be ideal in our situation as you need to encourage private investors by putting in place reasonable, stable & long-term import tariff protection so they can decide to produce locally rather than opt for quick TRADING returns from importation. That was what our really CLUELESS military DICTATORS did that brought us to this rotten stage of cheap & cheerful but deadly import-everything which the Jonathan/Sambo administration is slowly but steadily correcting.

Lastly, anyone who cannot fast/sacrifice meaningfully for a season will only remain perpetual slaves to those who can. May that not be our portion!!!
When you stayed in school for education you were making a sacrifice of your time & efforts in addition to that of your parents who paid the fees. You could have chosen to start "enjoying life" much earlier as maybe others did and are way below you now, normally.

I agree with most of what you wrote.

In addition, l am also looking at situation where we can achieve our "set-goals", whatever that is, with minimal negative impact on the poor populace.

Like they say, "There are MANY WAYS of killing a Cat, you can beat it to death, you can strangle it to death, you can poison it to death, you can run it over with your car, you can drown it, e.t.c"..... but the END GAME is that the CAT DIES!

Your choice of method now determines what "effort and Cost" it takes you to achieve your aim.
I believe that as rational humanbeings, "We should go through the path of least resistance, in solving our problems".

The fact that India or China or Japan used "crude methods" in the past, might be as a result of the prevailing situations around them.
But we MUST ALWAYS EVOLVE AND LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS AND NOT REPEAT THEM! NO ONE NEEDS TO RE-INVENT THE WHEEL, TO MAKE PROGRESS!

Yes, l agree, we can use measures like "import tarrifs and licenses" to encourage local production .... but we must also realize that if that "level of local production at that point in time" does not meet local demand, INFLATION OCCURS! Now, that is not in the interest of poor Nigerians.

On the other-hand, a combination measures l stated above (dont want to repeat everything) represents the "easiest way" to achieve the same objective without making the masses suffer very much. We will achieve the same objective without any structural damage to our psyche.

That is where l stand.
My suggestions are not just academic, they are tried and tested as l have worked for decades and have a litany of successful experience to show for it.

Cheers,

Lastpge!

It's because those products you named are owned by pakis or indians, they don't put money back into our economy they are just a bunch of dirty vultures, someone should burn their rice mills down.

I still dont understand, how is it that our locally produced rice (Abakaliki, Offada) cost almost thrice over the imported rice?

I sampled the market yesterday and realised that a "Derica" of local rice costs between #500 and #600, in Lagos!
Same imported rice, Mama Gold for example costsbetween #150 to #200, in Lagos!!

Does "supply" have a role to play in this cost disparity?
If so, how do we cushion the effect on the buyer, so that he/she gets value for money?
Do we ban 'imported substitutes' like Mama Gold?
Do we just ignore it and let the price keep rising? Of-course producers will prefer this as it translates to mega-profit.
Do we gradually wind-down imports of rice in the same quantity as our local production increases?

Take your pick.
