Vigilantes, Retired Soldiers Vow To Confront Boko Haram by Deeman87: 6:59pm On Sep 04, 2014
Nearly 10,000 people, including youth vigilantes, local hunters, retired military, police and para-military operatives, artisans and petty traders today vowed to confront Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.

They resolved to use dane guns, sticks, bows and arrows to confront the insurgents as it came in the wake of emerging reports of Nigerian soldiers retreating from the war front as a result of alleged superior powers of the insurgents.

Of recent, the insurgents have taken over many towns and villages in Borno State, including Gwoza, Gamboru Ngala, Dikwa, Bama, Banki and many others.

Reports suggest that Boko Haram insurgents are also perfecting plans to attack the state capital, prompting the resolve of the people to rise against the move.

The volunteers gathered at the Ramat Square in Maiduguri today, before they proceeded to the Palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi where they sought for his blessings ahead of the operation.

They said they are ready to enter the infamous Sambisa Forest and also go to all captured towns in order to reclaim them.

The state Coordinator of the Civilian JTF, Mallam Abba Aji Kalli said they were at the Shehu's palace to seek for his blessings and fatherly advice.

He told the Shehu to beg the Federal Government to provide them arms and logistic support so that they can protect themselves and vulnerable citizens.

Speaking to journalists later, he said, “The various groups you see here have vowed to go after the Boko Haram insurgents even if we are not well armed. We are optimistic that with our Gora (Sticks in Hausa) and other local arms, we would raid all terrorists’ hideouts and kill them when given permission by the federal government.

“We have done this before when Maiduguri was a theatre of mindless killings by the Boko Haram, we chased them out of the town but they have regrouped in the bushes and are now attacking people.

The SW,ND and SE have trained people who can easily be armed in times of war(and there is also the money to do it), but there havent be any clash between any of these group. Why cant we allow state to own state guard as it is in the US.
When an organization is being controlled by a goverment, it tends to be diplomatic in its action but an organization like cjtf, opc, massob, MEND etc that doesnt have a clear leadership and isnt under any goverment is much more dangerous.
I think we should instead allow state to have their own state guard and police.

Onwards brothers.

The Government needs to step in and arm the people or they'll just be cannon fodder -- it's not as though firearms are difficult to acquire if you have funds. Noble people.

Government or the government must also plan to retrieve the arms once they are armed and the insurgency is over or else there will be BH reloaded.

I can't help but laugh when I read that. So they want to go into the forest with sticks and dane guns and hope to kill them all when soldiers with aks and aerial support from military choppers are running for their lives?

I admire their courage even though it is misguided..... I still think the best solution is the provision of superior weapons and maneuvers for the people actually trained for combat cos I fear for the lives of these bold citizens of ours.... God bless Nigeria, God bless Africa.

I smell conspiracy in this volunteering.

The script writers of the insurgency in Nigeria are Professional in war and acrimony, but I have a WORD for you, YOU are all FAILURE.

Nigeria shall win the war, and if Nigeria must break it would be through referendum.

This is long over due.
These people have been too quiet and it is the reason why bokoharam grow so quickly.
They cant keep waiting for government to help them. With UNITY they can fight boko haram. It may look like they are poorly armed (very true), but there is power in unity, if 10,000 people can actively fight boko haram, then we will be seeing the end of boko haram soon.
I trust Yorubas and Igbos, we wont allow even 10people to die before we mobilize ourselves and fight!
The best thing is for government to provide them with food and stipends, no need to give them weapons and find a way of them moving out with the army. You will see that very soon we will have 30,000 volunteers. Basic support is all they need.
Government had better act FAST before their enthusiasm dies, especially in taking care of their upkeep.
