Liverpool hope Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho will be fit despite respective hip and groin problems.

Daniel Sturridge may be on the bench despite lacking fitness after a thigh injury, but Joe Allen, Emre Can, Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan remain out.

Everton right-back Seamus Coleman is doubtful with a head injury, while Steven Pienaar's hamstring problem will also be assessed.

Ross Barkley, who returned to light training this week, is still sidelined.

Midfielder Darron Gibson and full-back Bryan Oviedo proved their fitness by making comebacks from long-term injuries at Swansea on Tuesday.

However, the game will come too soon for striker Arouna Kone, who was an unused substitute in the League Cup defeat by the Swans.
MATCH PREVIEW

When Brendan Rodgers used the phrase "a little bit broken" to describe how Liverpool have looked so far this season, he might have been talking for Roberto Martinez and Everton too.

Neither of the Merseyside giants would have expected to be in the bottom half of the fledgling Premier League table by the time of their first derby clash, with both having won four points fewer than they had managed at the same stage a year ago.

Rodgers wants his new-look team to get back to the "high intensity" game that served Liverpool so well last season, and in that respect this is surely the perfect fixture.

The derby demands a flying start - something the Reds had no problem with in both matches against Everton last season. They hit two goals inside the first 20 minutes in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Goodison and were 3-0 up by half-time in January's 4-0 home win.

That last meeting saw Liverpool play arguably their best 45 minutes of football all season and served first notice of them being genuine title challengers, with Steven Gerrard at his barnstorming best.

After a week when Frank Lampard has showed there's life in the old legs yet, can the other old warhorse lift his game after some (surely premature) gossip about the end being nigh?

Like Rodgers, Martinez has maintained a positive outlook despite a disappointing start to the campaign, but underneath the charming exterior must lie concerns over defensive deficiencies.

With goals galore in all their games, perhaps the Toffees' emphasis should now be less about intensity and more about solidity.

On the radio phone-ins last week, Evertonians were strong in their condemnation of the home crash to Crystal Palace - whilst their manager put it being down to a series of "spooky" events.

Without a win across Stanley Park for exactly 15 years, there's now an Anfield ghost to confront.

Liverpool vs Everton: Old foes will meet
again at Anfield this weekend
Liverpool and Everton both had
disappointing mid week clashes in the
Capital One Cup. While Liverpool
managed to emerge victorious in a 14-13
penalty shoot out against
Middlesbrough, Everton were
comprehensively defeated by Swansea at
Goodison Park. Both teams would be
looking to come back from their
lackluster performances and defeat their
biggest rivals.
Venue
The first Merseyside derby of the season
is at Anfield. The 45,000 fans will be all
charged up and the club anthem would
be on everyone’s lips.
Kick-off time
The match is scheduled to kick off at
17:15 IST on a Sunday which would make
it a 12:45 kick off BST. The match is
scheduled to be telecasted on Star
Sports 4 (in India).
Probable Lineups
Liverpool has been thrown into a crisis
with Philippe Coutinho injured along with
Joe Allen and Emre Can. Jordan
Henderson too picked up a knock last
match week but is expected to be fit and
ready to start. Though Daniel Sturridge
has returned to training after a three week
layoff with a thigh injury, he would not be
expected to start the match due to lack of
match fitness.
Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana were
two players who played 120 minutes in
mid week and would be expected to start.
Steven Gerrard, Dejan Lovren, Martin
Skrtel and Alberto Moreno were rested for
the mid week fixture and would be fresh
for the derby.
The predicted line up for
Liverpool: Mignolet, Manquillo, Lovren,
Skrtel, Moreno, Gerrard, Lallana,
Henderson, Balotelli, Borini.
Everton suffered a miserable week. They
lost to Crystal Palace on the weekend and
then again were routed by Swansea.
They made seven changes to the team
that played against Swansea. Lukaku is
expected to be back in the starting lineup
against the Reds
Ross Barkley is a long term injury
absentee. Along with that, Seamus
Coleman’s involvement too is a doubt
while Steven Pienaar might be ready to
return after his injury.
The predicted line up for Everton: Howard,
Baines, Stones, Gibson, Jagielka,
McCarthy, Barry, Mirallas, Naismith,
Lukaku, McGeady.
Key Facts and Stats
- In the recent past, Liverpool has
recorded 2 wins and 3 draws against
Everton. One of the wins was a 4-0
drubbing of Everton at Anfield last
season.
- Everton have not defeated Liverpool at
Anfield for 15 years.
- The Merseyside derby has the record
for most red cards than any other game
in the Premier League.
Key Battles
Steven Gerrard has been a monumental
figure over the years in a Merseyside derby
Gerrard v/s Naismith
Steven Gerrard has had a poor start to the
season. He has failed to impact the
match in the both the defeat at West Ham
as well as against Aston Villa. Teams
have successfully put a striker on Gerrard
to nullify his presence in the match. This
makes it difficult for him to thread his
trademark through balls or make runs
beyond the midfield. The captain has
been restricted to sideways passing and
has been defensively exposed as well.
Naismith is the type of player who
buzzes around the holding midfielders.
He would be expected to mark the
opposing team’s captain and make it
difficult for him to construct the play.
Naismith can drop into the hole behind
Gerrard and create problems for the
Liverpool defense.
Balotelli v/s Distin
Balotelli has had an average start to his
Liverpool career but has shown glimpses
of his ability in matches. The Italian is
known for scoring in important goals in
crucial matches. He might be able to take
advantage of Everton’s leaky defense
that has conceded 3 goals in their last
two matches. It is up to Distin to nullify
his aerial threat.
Lovren v/s Lukaku
Lukaku is always a threat to opposition
defenses. He has scored 2 premier league
goals in 5 matches and he would be
looking forward to face a shaky Liverpool
defense. Liverpool has kept only one
clean sheet this season and Lovren too
has looked susceptible to mistakes.
Lovren must start proving his worth to
the manager and keeping the Belgium
striker silent would be a good way to
start.
Prediction
Liverpool has the home advantage and
the fans’ encouragement in a derby
match should help them put up an
inspired performance. Liverpool should
emerge as 2-1 victors with Daniel
Sturridge coming off the bench and
scoring a winner.

Brendan Rodgers
They would dearly love to unleash the
25-year-old against their neighbours at
Anfield but although Rodgers was upbeat
about his recovery, an appearance this
weekend appears to be based on hope as
much as expectation.
'We'll be very happy to have him back
and we hope that can be this weekend,'
said the Northern Irishman. 'We've got a
number of injuries that we're going to
give every chance to.
'He (Sturridge) is a player who's out on
the field working. Him and a number of
others we'll just assess nearer the time.
But if he doesn't make it he won't be far
off after that.
'He's someone that responds well to
treatment. Obviously it's gone well but
there are still a couple of days to go
before the game. The most important
thing is he's near to fitness.
Brendan Rodgers: No rush on Raheem
Sterling contract
'He certainly won't be match-fit, he
hasn't played for a few weeks, but it'll be
great to have him back because he's a
wonderful player for us.
'He's a great reference for our team at the
top of the field, his pace and movement
and quality, which we saw the last time
he played against Tottenham.'
Another of Rodgers' talented young
England stars, Raheem Sterling, has been
linked this week with Spanish giants Real
Madrid.
The 19-year-old forward, whose contract
at Anfield runs until 2017, is one of the
brightest young talents in the Premier
League and has had an impressive start
to the season but his manager is not
losing sleep over the reported interest.
'It shows that he's playing exceptionally
well,' said Rodgers.
'I think you could probably link Raheem
with every club in the world at the
moment. He's a fantastic young talent.
'I've nothing really to add to it. There's
obviously lots of speculation every day
about players coming and going here at
Liverpool.
'He's a wonderful boy who's developing
very, very well here. I think him and his
representatives and the people close to
him know how comfortable he is here
and I'm sure at some point in the future,
whatever contract we're looking to work
with will be sorted, but he's still got three
years left and there's no rush from my
perspective.'

McGeady relishing Merseyside derby
26 September 2014 Updated 11:02 GMT
Everton winger Aiden McGeady says he
does not believe the Merseyside derby has
the same level of hatred as Old Firm games
between Celtic and Rangers.
The 28-year-old, who spent six years at
Celtic, is set to feature in his second
game against Liverpool at Anfield on
Saturday, having come off the bench in a
4-0 defeat in January.
"Growing up as a Celtic fan, it's more
about religion there. There's a real hatred,"
he told BBC Football Focus.
"The Merseyside derby is different."
The Republic of Ireland international
added: "From what I have seen of games
between Liverpool and Everton there's
probably that dislike there, but I've heard
of some dads being Everton fans and
sons being Liverpool fans - it's a different
sort of rivalry."
Aiden McGeady played for
Celtic against Rangers, as well
as for Spartak Moscow against
CSKA Moscow
His first experience of the Merseyside
derby came in only his second Premier
League appearance for Everton, after
joining the club from Russian side Spartak
Moscow.
McGeady failed to score in his first few
months at the Toffees, but got off the
mark with a goal in the 2-2 draw at
Leicester in this season's opener.
Since then, he has impressed as part of
an attacking front four alongside Steven
Naismith, Kevin Mirallas and Romelu
Lukaku.
The midfielder believes Toffees boss
Roberto Martinez has played a key role in
his early season form.
"He is probably one of the best I've seen
tactically," added McGeady.
"He's part of this new breed of manager
coming through, everything is attacking
football, possession, just some of his
little ideas on positions and variants of
play I've never seen before.
"You can always learn in football and he's
opened my eyes a little bit.
"Probably last season I was more
concerned with not giving the ball away,
as opposed to doing what comes
naturally, this season I am more
comfortable and relaxed in the team and it
has given me more confidence and belief
in myself."
Lawro's Merseyside derby prediction
"It's not been a good start for
Liverpool in any department to be
honest, but I look at their team and
think they will get better.
"The same could be said about
Everton. They have been up and down
so far this season and, like Liverpool,
they have problems at the back. You
just know they will have a real go at
Anfield, though."
Read Lawro's full prediction and score
Everton have not struggled for goals this
season, having managed to score at least
twice in each of their five Premier League
games.
However, their defence has been their
weakness, with the 13 goals they have
conceded the highest in the league.
Liverpool will hope to capitalise on that
and kick-start their season with a victory.
When the Reds beat Everton in January,
they went on a run of 11 wins from 12
games.
This season, they have won just two of
their first five games, and manager
Brendan Rodgers said: "The derby
provides a platform to go on a good,
consistent run.
"Last season, we had a great spell after
our win over them and I think we collected
36 points from then onwards.
"It is a game to relish, full of tension and
intensity. It can help spur us on."

Re: Liverpool Vs Everton (1 - 0) On 27th September 2014 by luvola(m): 11:19pm On Sep 26, 2014
Roberto Martínez believes there has
been a psychological factor behind
Everton’s sorry record at Liverpool
since 1999 but that his team are
mentally equipped to end that sequence
on Saturday.
The Everton manager has urged his
players not to “become a team that
concedes goals and games cheaply”,
having shipped 17 goals in seven
matches so far, lost at home to Crystal
Palace on Sunday and exited the Capital
One Cup in the third round at Swansea
City on Tuesday. He admits, however,
that winning the Merseyside derby is a
matter of mentality as well as repairing
the team’s defensive vulnerability.
It will be 15 years to the day since
Everton last won at Anfield when the
Merseyside rivals meet on Saturday.
Everton have lost seven and drawn
seven of the subsequent 14 Premier
League meetings, have drawn once in
the FA Cup and not beaten Liverpool
home or away for almost four years.
Martínez accepts that record has
weighed on Everton in the past. “I
think the psychology is a very
important point because if you look at
the stats, 15 years without a win at
Anfield, then it needs to be about a bit
more than football. It can’t always be a
football reason why you haven’t won a
game over that period.
“I’ll accept that but I think, with the
psychology of this group, we are ready
to go anywhere. I’m not highlighting
Anfield as a place we don’t look
forward to. I think the mentality of the
group is to go anywhere and focus on
our performance. Will be it be a
difficult game? Of course. They are in a
position where they need to perform
well at home and get points, but I don’t
see that psychologically we are not
ready to go to Anfield and be ourselves.
But, if you look back over the last 15
years, there could be a question mark.”
Roberto Martínez is hoping Everton can
bring their 15-year wait for a win at
Anfield to an end on Saturday.
Photograph: David Howarth/PA
Martinez said the 15-year drought
should be a motivation to his players
on Saturday but admits that serious
work is required on Everton’s
defending after a bad start to the
season. “It is an area where we have
been quite poor and need time to
improve,” he said.
But the Everton manager denied that
his emphasis on attacking football has
been responsible for the poor
defending this term. “We always work
on all aspects of the game,” he added.
“We want to be fantastic going forward
but we want to be pristine in defence –
it’s not one or the other.
“What has been the focus more than
anything this week has been not to
blame defenders but our defensive
record. We want to defend as a team
and we attack as a team. The defenders
and goalkeeper have a big influence in
the way we play. It’s something we can
all help as a team and we do not look to
pass the responsibility just on to the
defenders.”
