Families and non-military staff residing in two major military barracks in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, are being evacuated after Islamist insurgents dropped letters announcing their plan to take the most important city in Nigeria’s northeast region. The letters were dropped at the gates of Giwa and Maimalari military barracks as well as different parts of the city of Maiduguri. Several soldiers also told SaharaReporters that some of their colleagues had fled the barracks after the letters were circulated amongst military personnel yesterday. A military officer at Defense Headquarters in Abuja said he was not aware of any desertions. The letter detailing the planned attack on Maiduguri was written in the Hausa language. It specifies that Boko Haram’s unpredictable leader, Abubakar Shekau, planned to personally lead insurgent fighters to attack Maimalari, the more formidable of the two barracks, and to fight to the death as a martyr. “Soldiers are moving their wives and children out because they should not be there if a battle begins,” a security source said. Boko Haram appears emboldened by its success in capturing Bama, the second largest city in Borno State. The Nigerian army and officials of Borno State were so rattled by the insurgents’ seizure of Bama that they claimed for two days that the town remained under Nigerian troops’ control. However, a senior official of the Borno State government told SaharaReporters yesterday that there was no doubt that Bama had fallen to the insurgents. A senior United States official also acknowledged the capture of the town by insurgents, and disclosed that the US would provide logistical assistance to the Nigerian government to help secure Maiduguri. Yesterday, the Islamist terrorists began an apparent push towards Maiduguri by killing some 30 people near Kawuri town. My confidence in the Nigerian Military is diminishing by the day. Bama fell just within five hours on Monday despite having a military barrack there. Am afraid but have to accept the fact that our military doesn't have what it takes to defend maidugiri. Have you been following this conflict at all? The commanders are nothing short of useless and brainless. That assaulted bama barrack had a massive hill behind it .yet Boko haram took the damn place .imagine having such a physical obstacle yet they could not defend their own barracks. Paying ordinary well diggers to build a network of caves and bunkers could have turn that place to well supplied bunkers capable of holding out for months. Some soldiers from the east , who deserted their army post ,were asked why, they said ," why should they die in/for a place that is not my home ". That my friend ,is Nigeria. A non -Nation. The only glue holding the country together is the esprit de corp amongst the dying stupid ,corrupt ,power usurping and devious ex-military leaders. I must also add oil. I see a battle of supremacy between the warring Boko haram factions. It is worth noting that shekau's faction of Boko haram is not the one fighting in Bama presently. The purported letter if genuine (cos I doubt any news that comes from the propaganda cornershop of Sahara reporters) is shekau faction's way of reminding us that they still exist. So why would Bokoharam drop leaflets warning people to leave anywhere when it is in their interest not to mention their method to slaughter as many people as possible. Moreover, they hide among people like the cowards they are. All these reports on Niraland are meant to scare Nigerians but Nigerians are not easily frightened people. So the best that such leaflet dropping would do is affect economic activity. Creating a perception of a sort of fevered environment in Nigeria is probably calculated to hurt Nigeria’s economy and discourage investment in the Nation. Nigerians I hope are learning from all these so that we emerge a stronger Nation one day. |
