THE Eauthorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile Ife, Osun State, has said that the female student of the institution who was suspected to have the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and moved to Lagos State, has tested negative to the virus.

The Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed this in a telephone interview on Thursday.

He said: "The preliminary result of the girl is out and she tested negative. Another test will be done tomorrow (Friday)."

"The university will issue a statement on this later today," Olanrewaju said.

Ebola: WHO decontaminates OAU health centre •No roommate of suspected patient moved to OAUTHC —OAU PRO

Oluwole Ige -Osogbo with Agency report

THE World Health Organisation (WHO) team on Ebola control has decontaminated the University Health Centre of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The team visited OAU over the case of a female student, suspected to have contracted Ebola virus disease, who had been moved to Lagos State, where proper screening would be carried to confirm her status.

As of press time on Wednesday, the suspected case was yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the fear over the unconfirmed outbreak assumed another dimension on Wednesday, following speculation that roommates of the student, who manifested symptoms of the disease on Tuesday, were moved to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC).

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, however, described the speculation as baseless and misleading, adding that the suspected student was living off campus.

In a press statement issued by Olanrewaju, “after a clinical assessment by the Ebola Surveillance Preparedness and Response Committee of the university, the authorities, thereafter, contacted the state Ministry of Health, the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO).”

He explained that the suspected female student was not admitted at the OAUTHC before she was evacuated to Lagos for further medical scrutiny.

Besides, the PRO of OAUTHC, Mr Olu Bello, also contended that no case of suspected Ebola patient was handled by the hospital, stressing that “there’s no Ebola virus disease in OAUTHC, it is just an anxiety and rumour peddling.”

However, a top government official in Osun State, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that only the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, could give further information on the status of the affected student.

Meanwhile, THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has stepped up the global efforts for the discovery of vaccines for the cure of the Ebola virus.

The WHO, last week, summoned an emergency meeting of health authorities of member nations in Geneva to find lasting solution to the deadly virus and some vaccines are clinically being evaluated with very high prospect of combating the disease.

Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr Paul Orhii who just returned from WHO emergency meeting, said: “there is a great promise that some drugs and vaccines could be found soon to contain the Ebola virus.”

Dr Orhii stated: “we have some Nigerian remedies that we are looking at very closely and after investigation we hope that they will be able to contain the Ebola virus. So, Nigerians do not need to panic.”

He explained that the deadly virus is not a death sentence in Nigeria as the Federal Government through the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health has managed the situation effectively and halted the rampaging spread of the disease.

According to him, Nigerians are full of commendation and appreciation to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, for effectively containing the virus through prompt deployment of adequate funds, material resources and personnel to strategic places.

The director-general said: “Nigerians are proud of current efforts of government as many countries are learning from the methods and strategies adopted by Nigeria to combat the Ebola menace.”

Thank God! This should ease the tension in and around the institution and also calm the minds of parents/guardians.
