Here we walk though setting up the Mobile Hotspot on BLACKBERRY OS 7.1 AND OS 10.0 AND ABOVE.
Mobile Hotspot allows you to share your BlackBerry data plan with other WiFi devices .
Some key points to be aware of:
Mobile Hotspot uses your data plan
Your carrier must have enabled tethering on your account
The WiFi radio must be enabled for Mobile Hotspot to work.

When Mobile Hotspot mode is turned on it enables the BlackBerry smartphone to be used as a mobile hotspot, so that other Wi-Fi enabled devices can use the mobile network connection of the BlackBerry smartphone.

On BlackBerry 10 OS:

To enable Mobile Hotspot on the smartphone:
Open Settings.
Tap Network and Connections > Mobile Hotspot.
If Mobile Hotspot mode has not yet been used, complete the setup as indicated in the on-screen instructions.
Note: Read the screens carefully as they provide important information about the Mobile Hotspot feature. Also, be sure to remember the Mobile Hotspot password for later.
Set the Mobile Hotspot switch to On.
Note: If Activation Required is displayed when attempting to enable the Mobile Hotspot feature on the BlackBerry smartphone, the smartphone is not provisioned to use the feature. Contact the wireless service provider for assistance.

After Mobile Hotspot mode is enabled on the smartphone, connect to the mobile hotspot with a Wi-Fi enabled device in the same fashion as connecting to a Wi-Fi router.

To manage Mobile Hotspot Connections on the smartphone:
Open Settings.
Tap Network and Connections > Mobile Hotspot.
Tap the configure icon.

On BlackBerry 7.1:

To enable Mobile Hotspot on the smartphone:
Open Manage Connections.
Select Wi-Fi.
Select Mobile Hotspot.

Note:
Once the Mobile Hotspot has been enabled, by default a WPA2 Password must be created to secure the network
If prompted with an Activation Required message, ensure that you have the correct data plan to use this feature.

To manage Mobile Hotspot Connections on the smartphone:
Open Options.
Select Network and Connections > Mobile Hotspot Connections > Options.
Within the Mobile Hotspot Connection options the user will be able to:
Change the Network Name (SSID).
Select a Security type. The available options are None, WEP, WPA2 Personal and WPA/WPA2 Personal
Note: Disabling security the network should only be done when troubleshooting a connection issue. An unsecured network can lead to high data usage and charges.
Select the Band. The available options are 802.11g and 802.11bg.
Select the option to allow or disallow connected devices to exchange data with each other over the network.
Set the Auto Shutoff Timer. This enables the Mobile Hotspot to automatically shut off if no device has connected to the network in a predetermined length of time. The available options are Never up to 1hr (in 5 minute increments).

HOW MOBILE HOTSPOT WORKS USING BLACKBERRY Z10

Before you begin: Before you turn on Mobile Hotspot mode, check that your BlackBerry device's connection to the mobile network is turned on.
1.
On the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen.
2.
Tap Settings > Network Connections > Mobile Hotspot.
3.
If you've never used Mobile Hotspot mode before, complete the instructions on the screen. Read the screens carefully as they provide important information about the Mobile Hotspot feature. Remember your Mobile Hotspot password for later.
4.
Set the Mobile Hotspot switch to On.
5.
On the device that you want to connect to the mobile hotspot, proceed as you would if you were connecting the device to any other Wi-Fi network. You need to know the name of the mobile hotspot and the password you set during the setup process.

ANDROID OS ( OPERATING SYSTEM ) week 5

What is an Android OS ?

Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance—a consortium of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. The first publicly available smartphone running Android, the HTC Dream, was released on October 22, 2008.

The user interface of Android is based on direct manipulation, using touch inputs that loosely correspond to real-world actions, like swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching to manipulate on-screen objects. Internal hardware—such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and proximity sensors—is used by some applications to respond to additional user actions, for example adjusting the screen from portrait to landscape depending on how the device is oriented. Android allows users to customize their home screens with shortcuts to applications and widgets, which allow users to display live content, such as emails and weather information, directly on the home screen. Applications can further send notifications to the user to inform them of relevant information, such as new emails and text messages.

As of July 2013, Android has the largest number of applications ("apps", available for download in Google Play store which has had over 1 million apps published, and over 50 billion downloads. A developer survey conducted in April–May 2013 found that Android is the most used platform among developers: it is used by 71% of the mobile developers population.

Android's source code is released by Google under the Apache License 2.0, which allows everyone to freely modify and distribute Android under various names except by reusing the "Android" trademark; however, device manufacturers and wireless carriers have licensed the trademark from Google. Most Android devices ship with a combination of open source and proprietary software. Android is popular with technology companies which require a ready-made, low-cost and customizable operating system for high-tech devices.Despite being primarily designed for phones and tablets, it also has been used in televisions, games consoles, digital cameras, and other electronics. Android's open nature has encouraged a large community of developers and enthusiasts to use the open-source code as a foundation for community-driven projects, which add new features for advanced users or bring Android to devices which were officially released running other operating systems.

As of May 2012, Android became the most popular mobile OS, having the largest installed base, and is a market leader in most countries including the United States; there it has had the highest installed base of mobile phones for years. In the third quarter of 2013, Android's share of the global smartphone shipment market—led by Samsung products—was 81.3%, the highest ever. In most markets Android-powered phones are the most popular comprising more than half of the overall smartphone sales, including the United States market starting with the September–November 2013 period. The operating system's success has made it a target for patent litigation as part of the so-called "smartphone wars" between technology companies. As of September 2013, one billion Android devices have been activated.

What is Android?
Android in English language refers to a robot with a human appearance. Android is an open source (licenced under Apache), linux-based operating system programmed majorly in C, C++ and Java. The Android platfrom was initially developed by Android Inc., which Google later acquired in 2005. In 2008, T-Mobile released the first Android phone ( T-Mobile G1) whose design wasn't exactly great but the power and potential of the Android platform was crystal clear. Still in 2008, Google also introduced the HTC Dream as the first marketed phone to use Android Technology. Android platfrom is the world's most poplular mobile device-run platform and is mostly used by HTC, Samsung and Motorola. Android being open source (free for any developer to modify to his / her taste) and Google's Open Handset Alliance, are two contributing factor to its success because it has a very large and active base of developers constantly perfecting the technology (Android Open Source Project). Apple's iOS and Windows OS are Android's chief rivals. You will come across the term "Android device" ( be it smartphone or tablet) a lot. Do not be embarassed to ask " what is an android phone " ? An android phone or tablet isn't exactly a special brand like Nokia , Blackberry, Apple or Techno; the term merely refers to a device running on an Android OS.

What are the various versions of Android, their code names and how they are ranked?

While Apple nicknames its OS versions according to Ski Resort-derived code names like Lion (10.7), Alpine (1.0), Wildcat (iPad only) , Big bear and Windows nicknames its OS versions rather randomly (Windows XP, Vista, 7, , Google uses dessert-derived code names to nickname its OS versions like Cupcake, Donut etc.
The versions of Android OS in ascending order are:
1.0 (API level 1) - No codename
1.1 (API level 2) - No codename
1.5 (API level 3, NDK 1) - Cupcake
1.6 (API level 4, NDK 2) - Donut
2.0 (API level 5) - Eclair
2.0.1 (API level 6) - Eclair
2.1 (API level 7, NDK 3) - Eclair
2.2.x (API level 8, NDK 4) - Froyo
2.3 - 2.3.2 (API level 9, NDK 5) - Gingerbread
2.3.3 - 2.3.7 (API level 10) - Gingerbread
3.0 (API level 11) - Honeycomb
3.1 (API level 12, NDK 6) - Honeycomb
3.2.x (API level 13) - Honeycomb

ROOTING OF AN ANDRIOD PHONE

What does rooting mean / what does it mean to root Android ?
Each carrier / hardware manufacturer places certain limitations on what you can do on your Android smartphone / tablet as an ordinary user. These privileges are either reserved for future use or limted for branding purposes.
Rooting is the process of gaining root access (privileged control) to an Android smartphone / tablet's operating system; thereby lifting limitations placed on the smartphone / tablet by its carrier or hardware manufacturer.

What are the benefits / advantages of rooting Android smartphones / tablets ?

ADVANTAGES OF ROOTING AN ANDRIOD PHONE

1. Ability to run special apps
Rooting enables you run an app called Superuser. This app enables you control which apps can have access to the root system. Rooting Android also enables you run some very sophisticated apps on your smartphone / tablet.

2. Tethering
Rooting Android allows you tether a laptop / desktop PC to your Android smartphone / tablet so the PC can access the internet via your Android's internet connection.

3. Memory management:
When you install Android applications, they are stored on your Android device's phone memory. Rooting enables you move the installation location to your SD card; helping your Android smartphone / tablet run faster.

4. Custom ROMS:
Custom ROMS (tweaked versions of an Android firmware) come with much added functionality to your Android smartphone / tablet, like a total customization of your device's look and feel. Rooting lifts the limitation on installing custom ROMS.

5. Delete Bloatware:
These are space occupying apps that your carrier or hardware manufacturer has installed on your Android device without giving you an option to delete. Rooting allows you delete such apps and free phone memory.

6. Improve battery life / performance:
Rooting Android allows you install customized kernels (software which enables your Android OS communicate with your smartphone's / tablet's hardware) which can optimize your Android device's hardware performance and do some overclocking ( maximize CPU usage) / underclocking (minimize CPU usage).

7. Latest Android OS updates:
Even if your carrier / hardware manufacturer has not yet released their official version of an Android OS you so desperately wish to enjoy, rooting enables you install that OS... and enjoy it!

8.Deeper backup:
Rooting allows you backup your entire Android smartphone / tablet (files, apps, app data, settings...) so you can easily get your important stuff back in the event of your Android getting bricked or lost.

Are there any disadvantages of rooting Android or problems associated with rooting Android ?

Yes, there are some drawbacks associated with rooting Android smartphones / tablets:

1.Automatically voided warranty:
Upon rooting your Android smartphone / tablet, you have automatically terminated your warranty / rendered it void so if anything happens to your smartphone / tablet within the stipulated warranty period, don't waste your time trying to return it. In layman's terms, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.

2. The risk of Bricking your Android device:
If you attempt rooting with the wrong technique, you just might end up with a bricked Android smartphone / tablet.

3. Lower performance:
Rooting allows you make global changes. In the wrong hands, a rooted Android device could become a time bomb. If the wrong settings are tampered with, you might end up far worse off than before rooting.

4. Exposure to viruses:
Whenever you install a custom ROM after rooting Android, you run the risk of importing viruses into your Android smartphone / tablet. This is because you are not certain for sure that the ROM developer has not embedded malware.
