Leading mobile phone manufacturers in China have earned a notorious reputation for slamming outrageous megapixels on their smartphone cameras, and most phone lovers have fallen victim of such practices.

We have seen Nokia Lumia 1020 launched with 41 MP cameras, and that’s obviously an incredible feat of achievement in the smartphone world. Sony has also created a benchmark for itself with the Xperia smartphones, attaining as much as 20 MP on its camera sensor, while the highly rated Samsung Galaxy S5 is slammed with a 16 MP camera. But do all of these really sum of to the quality of images a smartphone can output?

Users rate the quality of their smartphone cameras with the range of megapixeles available to them, at least, this is what mobile vendors want the ordinary smartphone enthusiast to believe, but Apple thinks otherwise and the iPhone 6 which retains the 8 megapixeles camera of its predecessor efficiently puts the overemphasis on higher megapixels to shame!

Now, What’s A Megapixel?

A megapixel is equal to one million pixels. A pixel is a picture element. The more pixels used to produce a photo, the less “grainy” it will appear and the better any enlargements made from it will be.

Do More Megapixels Mean Better Photo Quality?

It seems logical that more megapixels would mean a sharper photo. In truth, though, it could just mean a terrible photo made of more dots.

Ouch…

If you got a smartphone with 8 megapixels, you wish you could get a newer model that has 16 MP cameras. But does it really mean anything? Does having more megapixels amount to better photo quality, or is it all just marketing gimmicks?

Don’t Miss: Sony’s Detachable Camera Lens Turn Smartphones To A Full-fledged Digital Camera

Megapixels do matter, but that’s only up to a certain point. What smartphone users should pay more attention to, are details like the quality of the lens, shutter speed, image processing technology, circuitry and sensor — not to mention your mastery of lighting, composition and the cam....

Mega pixels tells the size or largeness of a picture.dont be deceived by more m.p.the size of the camera sensor tells more about d clearity of a picture.lumia 1020 and nokia 808 are still king of cameria, not for it 41mp but they av the largest sensor in any camera phone.

Large mega pixels are downsampled to 8mp like lumia 1020
With 41mp.it actually 8mp,so as to reduce noise(dotted points).nokia pureview lumias are respected for their large sensor, xenon flash(sharper nite pix) and photo beamer

You won't understand why you need phones with more mp until you need to take photos of objects or people that are at a distance. That's when you'll acknowledge that your 8 mp is trash.

You want to compare picture qualities with that tiny pictures you uploaded that looks like the picture taken with pin hole camera in the year 1622..... Men you most be joking.... If you want to compare, upload a good picture with a good quality

And don't say that mega pixels are overrated because you knew nothing about it in reality...... (except on paper)

Though more mega pixels doesn't mean better pictures but better quality pictures

And mind you those OEMs like Sony, Samsung and Nokia that increase their mega pixels also work on their image processing chip, camera lens, the software and all that, to achieve a better picture and better picture quality.....

Not like TECNO and some other junk Chines manufacturers that keeps hyping their fake Mega pixels without considering other factors that contribute in getting a better picture.

Judging a camera by its pixel is so Outdated But. Note my But iFixit tore down the iPhone 6 and iphone 6 Plus revealing 1GB of RAM. So far so good, Apple has always been able to create phone which rather than rely on specs relies on joint features customisation.

Comparing the iPhone 6's camera or battery with other Android devices is suicidal. Comparing Megapixels on Android devices is still forseeable as you cannot compare the output from HTC's UltraPixel camera with a Tecno's 8MP camera.

Just my take tho.

more megapixel means more picture resolution. and not really the display of the pic. the s5 won the iphone in that department, giving more details in a picture, because of its high megapixels. watch YouTube camera comparisons. the s5 edged the iphone 6 camera
Re: Megapixels Are So Overrated: Thanks To The iPhone 6 by ckhelvin: 8:10am On Sep 22, 2014
It pains me so much on how we are dwelling more on spec on papers..al dis r gimmicky features coz having an higher resolution doesn't mean u avin a higher pixel size..lemme explain!., samsung uses 16MP resolution with a size if 1.1micron which can never be compared with iPhone using 8MP with 1.5micron size which is also accompany with an aperture of f/2.2 given it edge to take a superb pix..wat u guys fail to know us that it doesn't necessarily means the amount of pixel resolution bin used buh the research bin adopted in the camera feature of dos smartphone and the ugly fact is that the iPhone beat any smartphone to that ..

Last bullet: why can't u guys reason y an iPhone uses 1gig ram and stil yet as a smooth user interface compare to the android phone that lag like shii., please guys stop limiting ur tech knowledge to just spec written on papers..you just have to understand the technology behind their feature used not just sayin trash wit limited understanding

note the diff. btw display resolution and picture resolution.what u wa tchd was display not pix resolution.s5 has ppi of 423 and iphone 6 is 342..s5>iphone 6.....clearer pix is determindd by sensor size nd not pix resolution.any camera with more than 8mp is a waste, cos u are not printing a stadium size pix.
