The song Royal by Lorde is a good critique of wealth and fame depicted in hip-hop music, especially by the black rappers such as Rick Ross whose portrayal of life is all about gold teeth, Cristal and Maybachs. It is a criticism that has roots in reality, the song poke and prod at Hip-Hop culture as widely celebrated in today's world, especially among black folks and the white wannabes. It is indicative of hip-hop cultures place in the mainstream

It is about the rubbish commercial music that American cultural imperialism feeds us. This song is about how intellectual and deep-thinking youth feel when every popular song is about gold teeth, and Cristal, and trashing hotel rooms, etc. These are objects obtained by wealth, advertised and endorsed lyrically by musicians who are role models to a generation. She's trying to portray hip hop and some of it’s materialistic messages in the crap called music today! We reject it and we will not let it change us into immoral little pig all over popular culture in music today. Bling, Pimped out rides, half naked artist on stage and in videos, as well as showing off their money to the point, that they look like a big damn joke.

I, for one, would argue that the song is about mockery of the culture we celebrates today, I mean who brags about tiger and gold plated everything when your folks are still struggling to feed their children, when they can’t pull themselves out of the situation they’re in no matter how hard they struggle against it. This is what artist like conscious rapper like Lupe Fiasco have been warning about.
Hip hop was something beautiful, once. It was the soul of a people, laid out for everyone to see. Now it’s a damn Hymn to capitalism and blatant misogyny, where instead of the listener feeling like they aren’t alone in their situation, they’re now having to listen to a lucky man brag about his expensive shopping list.

Even a hungry Naija artist who cannot afford 3 square meal, will shoot the video for his first single beside an Aston Martin, in a billionaire's mansion surrounded by nak.ed ash.ewos and empty bottles of expensive liquor. When in fact they will never be Royal. S-H-A-M-E they only drive those Cadillac in their dreams.
