Lagos - The Federal Government is to take over reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, said on Monday.

The minister said this in Lagos during a slide presentation of work on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway by Julius Berger Plc.

The presentation took place at the company’s office complex in Ijora.

Onolememen said that a new project design that involved five other ECOWAS member-countries was being undertaken.

He gave the assurance that the project would soon be implemented.

The minister said that a regional effort would be the best way to handle the road project.

He said that he was the Chairman of a five-member Country Project Steering Committee on the project.

“We will definitely get into the construction stage; at that time, all the challenges the Lagos State Government is having on that road will be a thing of the past because we will construct that road,“ he said.

The minister directed Julius Berger to complete rehabilitation of the Apapa/Oshodi Expressway in the next eight weeks.

“Take remedial works into consideration; three months is too far and would be chaotic, considering the ember months; maybe, you should look for ways to get less construction time.

“Let us see if we can terminate the emergency works by November,“ he said.

While inspecting the road, the minister said that rigid pavement was being used to reconstruct the road to cater for new load capacity which was not envisaged when the road was built in the 1970s.

He said that the Federal Government decided to take drastic measures to rehabilitate the road due to public outcry, following perennial gridlock on the road in June and July.

He said that the completion of a trailer park in Lagos was important as it would accommodate about 500 trucks and decongest the highway.

“Given the clemency of weather, Julius Berger should be able to finish emergency repairs in another eight weeks.

“The new design takes cognizance of heavy traffic.

“Rigid pavement would be used to fight the menace of surface and underground water prevalence on the road,“ he said.

The Lagos State Government embarked on expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Road from four to 10 lanes on April, 2009.

Construction of a light rail line and a Bus Rapid Transit corridor is part of the project, to enhance tourism and economic activities on this axis. (NAN)

10-lane Lagos-Badagry road to be ready June – Fashola on January 08, 2013

LAGOS — GOVERNOR Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Tuesday, said the first section of the 10-lane Lagos-Badagry Expressway will be completed this June.

This came as the governor flagged-off the track work of the blue light rail at Alaba Suru, Coker-Agunda Local Council Development Area, LCDA, of the state.Fashola who spoke during an inspection of the projects across the state, noted that the level of work on the National Art Theatre and Alaba-Mile 2 rail stations were in advance stage.

According to him, “in order to finish the road, the contractor did not go on vacation during the festive period, all these are geared towards ensuring that the project is delivered on time for residents’ use.”

The governor explained that the first section of the road which begun from National Theatre, Orile-Iganmu to Mile 2 Bus Stop Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, would be fully completed with the tracks laid.He said “While the construction work continues on the rail project from Orile-Iganmu to Marina, the expansion work on the road from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko will also be intensified.

This is what we do with the loan collected by the state government. We don’t use our loan to pay salaries and other recurrent expenditure; all we do with our loan is to provide capital projects that would benefit the residents.

”Fashola declared that “when the project is completed, the state would be at par with other major cities of the world.”

The governor added the type of transport system he desired for the state was that in few years, his “dream transportation system would have begun to manifest in the state.

Tales Of Agony On Lagos-Badagry Road

The reconstruction of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into a 10-super-highway, complete with light rail, is taking longer than even the Lagos State Government that is championing this laudable project anticipated. Financing is not going as planned and the government is not getting support from any other source within the country either. All of a sudden, there is a growing sense of despondency among residents on that axis of the city, which is also felt by those who do business out there

Traveling through the Lagos-Badagry road requires some form of patience and bravery because it’s a task that could take up to four or five hours.

The Lagos-Badagry road by law is designated a federal road because it is an international highway linking the nation to the West African region. It is of a higher stature than all other interstate roads that also belong to the federal government. Besides, the federal government built Lagos roads and infrastructure by virtue of its status then as the nation’s administrative capital.

Regardless, Lagos is exercising its usual visionary leadership to reconstruct the road with the assistance of the World Bank at a cost of about N220 billion (about US$ 1.5 billion). Where is this FUND

When the reconstruction and expansion project began in 2009, there was hope that it would take only a short time to complete since the Orile-Mile II stretch was done with ‘incredible’ speed taking into consideration how government works.

Regardless, the Lagos-Badagry expressway reconstruction Lot II, stretching from Mile II to Badagry that was contracted to China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) is now at snail-speed to the discomfort of commuters.

They can't even try it! He is just making a political statement to hoodwink people as 2015 approaches!

Common rehabilitation of less than 30KM of Apapa-Oshodi expressway is taking them ages, almost 4 years yet they are looking a for a road to take over.

When are they taking over Enugu-ph expressway?

When are they taking over Odukpani-Ikot ekpene expressway?

When are they taking over Aba-ikot ekpene-umuahia expressway?

When are they taking over-Abakaliki-Afikpo Federal highway?

When are they taking over Amasiri-Isu-Enugu Federal highway?

When are they taking over Ore-Sagamu expressway?

When are they taking over calabar -ogoja Feederal highway?

So many dilapidated roads begging for attention!

That minister is smoking weed! Does he even know the technicalities and agreement lagos state signed with different parties before embarking on the construction?

Where were they till Lagos State government intervened on that road?

Foolish minister, foolish president!

The FG neva said twas d responsibilty of LASG to build the road neither did it force d burden on Oga Fashola, there had a agreement between both parties, While I register my displeasure with d FG not taking up this lmportant transnatinal road project does it justify huge amount\ time wasted and inabilty on LASG to deliver on d project even after different timelines had elapsed? Moreso the road is bcontructed with LOANs obtained not TAX PAYERs MONEY. All we need is a permanent solution irrespective of whicheva party handles or deliver
