PM news reports that the President who spoke on Sunday at a church service to mark the country’s 54th Independence Anniversary coming up on October 2, 2014, in an inter-denominational church service at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, made a schoking revelation.

President Jonathan revealed that the country is still battling terrorism and kidnapping because Nigerians had not united against them as they did against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

He explained that Nigeria was able to defeat Ebola virus because Nigerians united against the disease regardless political affiliations, religion or ethnic origin.

Jonathan, who urged Nigerians to unite among themselves, pointed out that there was no force or challenge that could withstand a united nation.

“Take the case of Ebola for example; this is a good example all Nigerians must learn from. When Patrick Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria, it was in Lagos that this incidence happened and in terms of politics, Lagos is an opposition party state but the central government is the ruling party. From Lagos Ebola moved to Rivers State, also opposition party state. But because all Nigerians fought Ebola irrespective of political persuasion, irrespective of religion, irrespective of ethnicity, as individuals we defeated the disease,” Jonathan said.

The President praised the Nigerian military and other security operatives for their bravery and triumph so far recorded against the terrorists despite internal disruption.

Jonathan reiterated that the country’s armed forces and other security agencies need Nigerians support and encouragement to fully rid the country of terrorists and other enemies of the state.

He also condemned the provocative and instigating statements made by some politicians and urged them to refrain from such statements for the sake of national peace.

“We will not require people to come from heaven or other countries to solve our problems. What we require from our brothers and sisters is to encourage our military because it is not easy. When people are sleeping in their houses at night, they are busy fighting. Bullets are not badminton rackets or something. When I listen to some statements made by some people who call themselves leaders, I feel sad for the country. We must believe that we do not have any other country outside of Nigeria,” Jonathan said.

It would be recalled that on September 23, 2014, Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, revealed that Nigeria is completely free of active Ebola cases, adding that all contacts of the deadly disease have been released from surveillance.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has continued to clampdown on the Boko Haram terrorists group. The sect members were repelled by the Nigerian army on Thursday and Friday September 25-26, 2014, when they tried to attack Konduga, Beneshek and Damboa communities. The Nigerian Army also recorded a resounding victory over Boko Haram insurgents during a failed attempt to capture Maiduguri.
