You need to understand that most cars come into Nigeria through Lagos. Either through Tin Can port or Cotonou/Seme Border and most people would likely register their cars in Lagos before travelling with it to their respective states to minimize police and customs stress.

True talk.. though i'm based up north, the car I use for traveling has Abuja plate number while the knock about daily car has a local plate number.

That is not true. It's just to reduce police harassment, after purchase, when driving to your destination. And that is why Registering car in Lagos is more expensive than any other state, at par with Abuja.

many cars leave lagos unregistered. Dealers cant register cars unsold, afterall, we have dealers in all states....sooooo?

check d map, nigeria has many neighboring countries linking many other states. More vehicles are smuggled than passing through lagos port.

well, I think there is more to it than that....... I will relate it to security reasons. Everyone has a link with lagos being a universal state with many nigerian represented n u wont feel like a jjc when in other state. Cars with lagos reg are not easily stolen when out of ur base but imagine a kano reg in edo, it is ovbious u are an "osu".
Funny enough, if ur state doesnt have autoreg, whenever u want to renew ur licence in an autoreg state, u will pay arrears of d unpaid eventhough u never faulted but only did it in anoda state.

In a normal world they are suppose to issue them a temporary tag from the port that should expire 30 days from clearing that way you should be able to drive a car in Nigeria for 30 days after then you have to reapply for a temp tag in your state of residence, but since it it the since largest chop money source for anything wearing a uniform they will disregard it and rob a new owner anyway.

Most problems are fixed with simple thing but for the few who thrive in chaos, it is to their benefit things stay chaotic.

Why will you pay N200k plus as duty on a car and you are still treated as a criminal by the government you just paid?

Again, except yhur car is issued with oyo official licence plates, IMHO private Oyo doesn't look good on yhur GL550 or S63AMG. A 1994 Nissan Sunny or those Mazda E2000 buses MayB.

i agree with u.apart from BDJ and maybe LUY,the rest aint pleasing...AGG,DDA,TDE,YYY just to mention a few...
