Once a peaceful community sharing life and happiness and then came the Chinese contractors and their carefree state managers. This is the story of the Iba community of Iba local government Lagos. A community plagued by floods which have already claimed its fair share of human lives over the years.
Some years ago a contract was awarded by the state government under the leadership of Governor Fashola. A contract meant to dualize the already existing Lasu igando road all the way to Iyana Iba. This contract was to cover both aesthetics and drainage. A mere 5 years later, the little town of Iba with a rough estimated population running into several hundreds of thousand is worse hit by the share negligence on the path of the contractors CCEC and the corresponding supervisory body, Lagos state ministry of works.
The Chinese civil construction company channeled all drains from Igando and iyanaiba to meet at an already existing canal along Iba. They failed however to improve or increase the capacity of this canal. The result, the incapacitated canal burst its banks several times during the rainy season, forcing high current flood waters into the homes of Tax paying citizens of Lagos. Living within Iba environs. Sometimes coming as flash floods without adequate warnings or evacuations.

It gets worse. Various chairpersons of Iba local government area, connive with certain individuals in the community to extort hard earned monies from local residents in the guise of working out a flood control solution. Last year, residents were made to path with 20,000 per house. Need I say more, as shown in the pictures above, it was embezzled. This year alone, over 5000 have been paid from each houses and some paid more. Most times running into collective millions.
This is a plea to all out there, law firms, public prosecutors, government agencies. Help, save the lives of people from Iba community.
This is the community that hosts Lasu
