FULL NAMES: Peter Ayodele Fayose
DATE OF BIRTH: 13 November 1960
OCCUPATION: POLITICIAN/GOVERNOR-ELECT
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Married!

EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

Fayose grew up in Ibadan, Oyo State where he attended Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo. [ 1 ]He conducted one of the most sought after medical outreach programmes during his political campaign in 2001.
On the 29th of May 2003 he was sworn into office as the second civilian Governor of Ekiti state on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure lasted till 19th October 2006 when he was impeached by the state legislature and this impeachment was declared illegal by the Federal Government

CAREER AND LIFE
It is undeniable that former Governor Ayo Fayose is a well known figure in Ekiti state. His political activities came to limelight during his tenure as Governor of Ekiti state between 2003 and 2006. Initially, during this period in Ekiti state, former Governor Ayo Fayose enjoyed massive goodwill from the poor and downtrodden that he readily identified with. He was a very generous man and grabbed any opportunity to relate with the common folk. It is said that the people sort-of saw themselves in him. Infact, former Governor Ayo Fayose, saw “himself as a beacon of hope for every Nigerian who had been brought up without (a) silver spoon. He openly talked of his relatively poor background as the source of hatred by the privileged ones.

However, this goodwill started disappearing when according to Newspaper reports during the latter part of his tenure, living in Ekiti state became a nightmare. Tension, politically motivated killings, high profile death – threats and the like skyrocketed without a warning. This got to a point where eminent personalities like Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), Femi Falana (SAN), and former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State Mr. Abiodun Aluko had cause to write to the President, and the Inspector-general of Police that their lives were under threat by agents of former Governor Ayo Fayose.
This is an excerpt from Ifedayo Sayo writing on this development for The Punch Newspaper on October 6, 2004; “Babalola had in a letter to President Olusegun Obasanjo on the matter accused the governor of planning to assassinate him.
He said: “My problem with Fayose started shortly after the crisis that engulfed the state following an attempt on the life of the chairman of Ado Ekiti Local Council, Mr. Taye Fasubaa. The President had invited me and the parties directly involved to Abuja.
“I was just then returning from my holidays abroad, but His Excellency asked me to come. Because of the reverence I had and still do have for Obasanjo, I waived the requirements of my own comfort and went to Abuja.
“In the resolution of the crisis then, I ordered that neither party over-stepped its bounds any further in a way that would re-ignite the crisis. I stated that Fayose had no right to have deducted funds that ordinarily belonged to local councils. I never knew that by that I had hurt the governor where it pains him most.

“At the end of our deliberations that day, the governor assured our gathering that he would pay me a visit. Up till now he has not done so. And I am not bothered.
“A few months after the attempted murder of Fasubaa, Fayose embarked on a programme of transfer of part of the Ekiti State Secretariat at Ado-Ekiti to his home town, Afao-Ekiti, situated in another local council. The Ewi in Council and Ado Progressive Union objected. Because I supported my people and objected to the transfer of the secretariat from Ado-Ekiti, he descended heavily on the Ewi and myself, claiming that I was the person who influenced Obasanjo to oppose the transfer.

“I built and donated an auditorium to the Faculty of Law, University of Ado-Ekiti which was not accredited because of lack of necessary faculty buildings. I suggested to the vice-chancellor that since the President was coming to Ado-Ekiti, he should ensure that the project was commissioned by him. Fayose was furious at the suggestion. He boasted that it was over his dead body that the President would commission the project.
“However, His Excellency graciously commissioned the project which was an example par excellence of what Ekiti citizens should do for the state.
“Not only did he ensure that his state television and radio did not carry the news, he (the governor) vowed to deal with me. In fact, any newscaster who broadcasts any view different from his does so at his peril.
“After the visit of the President, Fayose began a series of television propaganda in which he referred to the visit of the President and referred to me as the useless elder statesman from Ado-Ekiti living at Ibadan who told lies to the President about his chicken programme and who will be eliminated,” Babalola alleged.”

Former Governor Ayo Fayose incumbent at the time reacted to the allegation and The Punch Newspaper’s Ifedayo Sayo captures it as “EKITI State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has expressed deep concern over the allegation that he was planning to assassinate an Ibadan-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Afe Babalola.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Fayose, who is yet to arrive the state from his trip abroad, declared that the allegation by Babalola against him was unfounded and baseless, saying the elder statesman was being used against him by his detractors. But Fayose, who claimed that he was rattled by the allegation, said he was not prepared to join issues with the elder statesman, pointing out that the press war against him by his detractors would not count in the 2007 elections.
His words: “This press war will not distract me from doing the good work the people elected me to do. I want to charge everybody to have the interest of the state at heart and work for the good of our state.
“I am praying that the peace of God will rule the life of Chief Afe Babalola. It is not in my interest that he should die now. This accusation, I believe, is part of the price of leadership that I must bear as the father of all. I will continue to have respect for him and despite the accusation I still hold him in high esteem.
“However, he should appreciate that the interest of Ekiti supersedes any other interest and should not allow himself to be used against me. He should continue to be a nationalist,” the governor said.
Fayose wondered why he should be accused of planning to assassinate the legal luminary when Babalola is not a politician struggling for power with him.
Re: Peter Ayodele Fayose And Politics by ilotriouzAY(m): 1:49pm On Oct 14, 2014
The governor said: “The plan of the opposition is to distract and discredit me ahead of 2007 elections, but let me tell them, this press war will not take them far in politics because the people of Ekiti are at peace with me.”
Fayose said the day of reckoning would soon come and all the controversies against him would die because the masses were only interested in service delivery, which had made him the toast of the ordinary man in the state.”

Sina Babalola writing for Vanguard, on June 13 2005 throws more light on the subject “IBADAN- based Senior Advocate of Nigeria and pro-chancellor of the University of Lagos, Chief Afe Babalola, over the weekend alleged that his life is no longer safe, alleging some people believed to be agents of the Ekiti State government are after his life.
Chief Babalola, in a letter he sent to the President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and copied some prominent Ekiti indigenes, said, “I am afraid that unless I cry out now, I may be guilty of carelessness, negligence or complacency.”
Chief Babalola said that he had four different text messages on his Glo-Mobile number in the last two months, but “my first reaction was to ignore them. However, in view of the concealed sender-number and subsequent events, I am longer comfortable allowing the matter to lie low or to leave it uninvestigated.””

Ogunsakin and Sayo in their revealing piece on June 21, 2005 provide details into the Femi Falana death-threat, a part of which is reproduced here: “On Sunday, Falana had at a press conference in Lagos stated that the governor was planning to assassinate him. The allegation came a week after Chief Babalola petitioned President Olusegun that he had documentary evidence that Fayose was planning to eliminate him.
Falana on Sunday showed a video clip where the governor at a rally allegedly threatened to kill him.
The clip was said to have been recorded on May 25 and it had series of threats by Fayose who allegedly said “anybody who opposes me would be killed.”
In the clip, the governor, wearing a white shirt and a white fez cap, allegedly said that he was ready to eliminate opponents. The governor also allegedly said in the clip: “The day of election is not to be joked with. Anybody who crosses my path would be crushed. Tell Akilaya, Segun Oni and Falana that I am not Niyi Adebayo (former governor) who they can toy with. They should be warned or else… if I found any of you to be disloyal… well may God have mercy on your soul.”
Re: Peter Ayodele Fayose And Politics by ilotriouzAY(m): 1:50pm On Oct 14, 2014
Falana later told journalists that the video recording was given to him by one of Fayose security aides.
Falana said: “On May 26, somebody phoned me after listening to the alleged threats by Fayose, urging me to take action. I did a petition to the Acting I.G. on May 27, I had a meeting with him in Abuja, asking him to restrain Fayose from causing mayhem in Ekiti on May 28,
The activist lawyers continued: “Unfortunately, my timely warnings fell on deaf ears, hence, the cold and premeditated murder of Mr. Tunji Omojala, the brother in-law of the NCP Councillorship candidate, Mr. Sabaike Sulaiman,”
He added: “A Security aide to the governor, in concern for the lives of Ekiti State indigenes sent this video clip to me. When I received it, I asked him why he did. He said that he made it available because Fayose denied the plot to assassinate Chief Afe Babalola and that he wanted him confronted with such open threats to my life and those of others.”

When contacted on phone last night, Falana said that the apology of Governor Fayose was well noted; but that beyond that, justice must be done.
He said: “Justice must be done. Justice for the living, the dead and for suspects whose reputations have been called to question. If Governor Fayose’s apology can bring back to life all those who had been sent to their untimely grave in the last two years, the apology would be taken. We are still demanding full investigations into the myriad of acts of violence and accompanying deaths that disrupted the lives of Ekiti people since he took over the administration of the state. ”

The eminent Lawyer, Femi Falana again in another related development which was captured by ThisDayLive Newspaper on the 11th of Dec. 2013 said: “The only time that I have openly accused a government in this state of involvement in killings was between 2003 and 2006, both the police and the State Security Service (SSS) confirmed and have confirmed that the Ayo Fayose regime was involved and that indeed he had a killers squad. Some of the members had been charged to court, their cases are pending in court, the cases were filed by the police, in fact two of them were convicted by the high court here.
Re: Peter Ayodele Fayose And Politics by ilotriouzAY(m): 1:52pm On Oct 14, 2014
“Since 2003 most of the killers have been fished out by the police and the SSS but unfortunately, the federal government has exhibited lack of political will to prosecute some of these cases. Some of the cases are here, the killers of Tunde Omojola are standing trial, the killers of Dr. Ayo Daramola are standing trial and many others”

How Fayose Conquered Obasanjo & Got His Job Back 8 Years After He Was Impeached

Not many people insult former President Olusegun Obasanjo and get away with him ─ but Peter Ayodele Fayose, the former governor and now governor-elect of Ekiti State, successfully did that.
It was in December 2010 in Okuku, Osun State. Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola had been deposed as governor of the state by the Appeal Court and his community decided to welcome him back home with a thanksgiving service. Fayose, who had been “deposed” as Ekiti governor by
Obasanjo in 2006, arrived the venue of the thanksgiving reception and saw former military president Ibrahim Babangida, the then Governors Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo) and Gbenga Daniel (Ogun).
Obasanjo was there, but Fayose did not see him as he greeted everyone except the former president.
Perplexed, Obasanjo asked Fayose if he did not see him.
Oh, Fayose actually saw him. “I won’t greet you. You are bad person! I don’t greet bad people!” Fayose said.
“You are a bastard,” Obasanjo fired back. When Obasanjo says things like that, people normally cringe, while anyone at the receiving end would bow and say “sorry” or keep mute in reverence. Not Fayose. He shouted back at Obasanjo:
“You are a father of bastards!” He did not stop there. He moved menacingly towards Obasanjo and warned the former president never to talk to him again. “You created all these troubles in the south-west,” Fayose said.
Still fuming, he released one more bullet: “And for your information, I did not come here as a member of your party. I am no longer a PDP member.” With the atmosphere polluted, Fayose left the reception prematurely, despite entreaties by Oyinlola who begged him not to “spoil this great occasion”.

It is only those who don’t know Fayose ─ or those who forgot how he was removed as governor in 2006 ─ that will be baffled by his reaction to Obasanjo.
Re: Peter Ayodele Fayose And Politics by ilotriouzAY(m): 1:54pm On Oct 14, 2014
He was humiliated out of office when Obasanjo was at the height of his powers in Aso Rock. Two of Obasanjo’s major weapons in those days were the EFCC and state of emergency.
Anytime a governor fell out of favour with him, he usually deployed one or the other to get him out of power. On October 6, 2006, the drama started with the impeachment of Fayose and his deputy, Mrs Biodun Olujimi, and the assumption of office by the state speaker, Friday Aderemi, as the new governor. But that was not where Obasanjo was going. As it turned out, Olujimi was also encouraged to declare herself governor ─ and the full script unfolded. With “two governors” in place, Obasanjo declared that there was a breakdown of law and order in the state and quickly declared a state of emergency, promptly appointing Brig-Gen. Adetunji Olurin (rtd) as the sole administrator of the state on October 19, 2006. Fayose fled the country as he was removed from office.

With his impeachment, he had lost constitutional immunity ─ paving the way to be arrested on charges of corruption and murder. His exit from Nigeria was said to have been facilitated by two top police chiefs, and he was in exile until Obasanjo left power in 2007.
Fayose returned to the country in December 2007 and was well received in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. That was clearly a signal that he had not lost his support base, which he amazingly built to unseat Chief Niyi Adebayo as Ekiti governor in 2003.

Fayose told the large gathering at his reception: “Today, my joy knows no bounds as I return home into the warm embrace of you, my good people, and admirers in Ekiti. Life away from home was never the same, going by the affluence and influence associated with the office of a governor. “On the other hand, my wilderness experience has offered me enough opportunity to reflect on my ordinariness as a man, as the way up might be the way down, because nothing they say lasts forever.
I was made to suffer for what I knew nothing about. Rather than being honoured, I was humiliated. Rather than being promoted, I was persecuted. You are all living witnesses of how I turned around our non-existent social infrastructure, empowering you, putting smiles on your faces and touching your lives individually.”

His attempt to run for senate in 2011 on the ticket of the Labour Party failed, and he returned to the PDP. He had been expelled but he got his readmission backdated by two years, making it possible for him to seek an elective post immediately.
Fayose was born on November 13, 1960 to parents from Afao-Ekiti ─ although he grew up in Ibadan and attended Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo. He was Ekiti governor from May 29, 2003 to October 16, 2006. He will now be sworn to take over from Dr. Kayode Fayemi on October 15, 2014.
