2015 CAF U-23 AFCON: NIGERIA, 7 OTHERS BATTLE FOR OLYMPIC TICKETS

The 2nd edition of the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations Championship starts this weekend in Senegal. The Championship serves as the qualifiers in Africa to the football event of the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.

Eight teams will take part in the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations from November 28 to December 12, 2015 with the winners, runners-up and third-placed teams assured of direct qualification while the fourth-placed side will be involved in a play-off to determine their participation at the Games.

Completesportsnigeria.com's IZUCHUKWU OKOSI presents a preview of the U-23 AFCON and the teams hoping to be on the flight to Brazil next year.

The tournament was initially scheduled to take place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 5–19 December 2015.

However CAF changed the hosts and requested Senegal to host the tournament instead, and the tournament dates were also changed later.

Egypt were the third-placed team while fourth-placed Senegal qualified for the 2012 Olympics via the Play-Offs.

Three teams; Mali, Tunisia and Zambia will be making their debuts in Senegal.

Nigeria's U-23 Eagles, South Africa and Algeria exited the tournament in the group stages when this format of qualification to the Olympics started and held in Morocco in 2011.

The second edition which kicks off this weekend will hold in two Senegalese cities of Dakar (capital) and M'Bour.

The 60,000 capacity Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar and the smaller Stade Caroline Faye in M'Bour which sits 5,000 fans will be the venues.

A total of 23 match officials (10 referees and 13 assistants) have been selected for the 2015 U-23 AFCON.

1ST EDITION: MOROCO 2011

Egypt was originally scheduled to be hosted by Egypt from November 26 to December 10, 2011.

However, less than two months prior to the start of the tournament, Egyptian authorities decided against hosting the competition because of security concerns.

Gabon were the winners of the first edition of the tournament in Morocco four years ago.

'The Panthers' subsequently made their first appearance at the 2012 Olympics in London but were eliminated in the group stages.

Morocco were the runners-up when they hosted the tournament which was the first time the qualifiers for the football event of the Olympics will take a competition format in Africa.

The north Africans were eliminated in the group stages at the London Olympics, meaning the Junior Atlas Lions' record of having never qualified from the group stages at the Olympics after four appearances continued.

A total of 16 games were played in the first edition of the CAF U-23 AFCON in Morocco, then known as the CAF U-23 Championship, which was the first time CAF would determine Africa's representatives at the Olympics.

The Championship in 2011 produced 35 goals (2.19 per game).

Two stadiums; Stade de Marrakech and Stade de Tanger hosted the Championship in 2011.

SENEGAL 2015: TEAM-BY-TEAM INTRO

GROUP A

SENEGAL
The Senegalese team's major ambition going into the U-23 AFCON is to be among the top three teams by the end of the tournament and avoid the uncertainty in the Play-Offs.

Senegal are the hosts and they will have the backing of their fans.

The Cubs of Teranga reached the 2012 Olympics through the play-offs. They were eliminated at the quarter-finals stage of the Olympics proper in London, when Mexico defeated them 4-2.

SOUTH AFRICA
The Amaglug-glug of South Africa are hoping to grace their second Olympic football tournament after their debut in 2000 when Sydney hosted. They were eliminated at the group stage 15 years ago.

The South African team consist mostly of players from the domestic front but it is left to be seen if the desire and hunger to be reckoned with as one of Africa's football elites will be enough to achieve the result they hope for.

TUNISIA
Tunisia are participating at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations for the first time. However they are expected to have a good outing due to their strong domestic league that boost of quality players as well as the contributions from their foreign legion.

ZAMBIA
Zambia will also making be a debut appearance at the U-23 Cup of Nations. Zambian national teams take part in the Eastern and Central Africa (CECAFA) regional tournaments which act as good dress rehearsal for bigger tournaments, and although they are not favourites to qualify for the Olympics, they will be going to Senegal as a dark horse capable of causing upsets.

The wonderful display of the legendary Kalusha Bwalya at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul will remain indelible in the hearts of Zambian football fans. That will be inspiration to the present generation of Zambian youngsters that dream of gracing the football tournament of the Olympics.

GROUP B

NIGERIA
The Dream Team XI will play in Group B of the 2015 CAF U-23 Cup of Nations. The team coached by Samson Siasia will play Mali (November 29), Egypt (December 2) and Algeria (December 5).

Nigeria were eliminated in the group stages of the first edition held in Morocco in 2011 with Austin Eguavoen in charge of the Eagles and consequently missed out from the football tournament of the Olympics in London the following year.

Eguavoen had hoped to get majority of his players from the European leagues to grace the Championship but was disappointed by the refusal of clubs to release their players as it was not played on FIFA free days.

In 2015 however, Siasia will make use of four foreign-based players and 17 home-based players.

The Nigerian U-23 Eagles will be gunning for their seventh appearance at the Olympics when hostilities begin in Senegal. The country's first appearance was in 1968. They were winners in 1996 in Atlanta and runners-up in 2008 in Beijing.

Raheem Lawal was the star of the Nigerian team in 2011. Daniel Uchechi also had a good outing in Morocco. Samson Siasia will be banking on players like Taiwo Awoniyi, Junior Ajayi and Oghenkaro Etebor to achieve qualification to the Olympics next year.

MALI
Mali will square up against Nigeria on Sunday, November 29. That will be their first game in the tournament history too as it is their first appearance.

It wasn't long that another Malian side lost to Nigeria-this time at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup final in Chile.

It was Mali's first U-17 final but Nigeria's fifth triumph at that level.

So come Sunday, the Malian U-23 side will be hoping to salvage some pride against Nigeria and enhance their chances of reaching the semi-finals stage.

ALGERIA
The Fennec Foxes are taking the U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal seriously. The country's final squad list was released last week.

The north Africans were rock bottom of Group A in the first edition of the pre Olympics qualifying tournament in Morocco four years ago.

They were eliminated alongside Nigeria who beat 4-1 when both sides faced each other.

Algeria like other teams are travelling to Senegal to achieve qualification to the 2016 Olympics but Nigeria being a dominant force will be a hard nut to crack.

Egypt will also not be easy opponents as they naturally would know about the football philosophy of their regional neighbours.

EGYPT
The Egyptian Football Association withdrew their U-23 team from participating at the All Africa Games in DR Congo so opponents wishing to have an insight into how the Pharaohs might look like in Senegal will be disappointed.

Egypt are eyeing a 12th appearance at the Olympics which they first attended in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920. They were fourth-placed finishers at the Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928 and Tokyo in 1964.
They were eliminated at the quarter-finals stage in London losing 3-0 to Japan. The Pharaohs had not qualified in four previous editions.

Egypt defeated Kenya, Burundi and Uganda in the first, second and third rounds of qualifiers before booking a place in Senegal.

The Egyptian league is arguably the most competitive and well run on the African continent though internal strife and political problems threaten to continue derailing them.

CAF RULES ON THE U-23 CUP OF NATIONS

The Confederation of African Football released the rules that will guide the tournament in Senegal. As expected, the top two teams of each group advance to the semi-finals.

The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in the following order:

1. Number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned;

2. Goal difference in games between the teams concerned;

3. Goals scored in games between the teams concerned;

4. If, after applying criteria 1 to 3 to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5 to 7 apply;

5. Goal difference in all games;

6. Goals scored in all games;

7. Drawing of lots.
Gabon were the winners of the first edition of the tournament in Morocco four years ago.

'The Panthers' made their first appearance at the 2012 Olympics in London but were eliminated in the group stages.

Morocco were the runners-up when they hosted the tournament which was the first time qualification to the football event will take a competition format in Africa.

The north Africans were eliminated in the group stages at the London Olympics, meaning the Junior Atlas Lions' record of having never qualified from the group stages at the Olympics after four appearances continued.

Nigeria/Senegal: Awoniyi Hopes for Another Victory in Senegal

Taiwo Awoniyi returns to Senegal for the Caf Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations with so much hope, eight months after playing a role in helping Nigeria win the continent's under-20 championship, reports supersport.com.

Awoniyi said he feels a deja vu kind of hunch as he joined Samson Siasia and his Nigerian under-23 teammates in The Gambia ahead of their trip to Senegal, where they are expected to play in the city of M'Bour in Group B alongside Egypt, Algeria and Mali.

"Yes Senegal reminds me of a lot," began the striker, who is on loan from Liverpool to FSV Frankfurt. "I am thankful to God for this opportunity to be part of the squad going for this competition."

Awoniyi scored three goals at the African Under-20 Championship in March. He netted the opening two goals in their 3-1 win over Senegal and followed up with another goal against Congo in which Nigeria won 4-1.

The Nigerian under-20s finished as champions after defeating hosts Senegal 1-0 through Bernard Bulbwa's superb goal.

The 18-year-old forward hopes that the Nigerian under-23s will get off the ground running in Senegal and win a spot to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Jainero, Brazil.

But the teenage striker does not want the spotlight to focus on him as he wants to see Siasia's men perform well at the tournament.

U-23 AFCON: Babayaro wishes Dream Team VI good outing

By Tunde
Former Nigeria International, Celestine Babayaro has wished the Dream Team VI a winning start in their bid to reach the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Babayaro, who helped Nigeria to its first Olympic gold medal in football at the Summer games in Atlanta, hailed his former teammate, Samson Siasia who has announced his 21-man list for the U-23 Afcon which gets underway this weekend, for his mental strength and ability to keep his team committed despite the many hiccups in their preparation for the competition.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle defender hoped the Dream Team VI will put smiles on the faces of football fans in the country like the Golden Eagles securing Nigeria’s 5th U-17 World Cup title earlier this month.

How can you have Algeria, Egypt, Mali and Nigeria in one group and have useless teams like SA, Zambia in another?

The only teams worth a mention in Group A is Senegal and Tunisia.....I don't even know how o feel about his U23 tournament because the set up is already wrong.

Mali and Senegalese teams will obviously have most of their players from the U20 world cup playing this tournament. What do we have? Nigeria has just been abysmal, it will be a miracle if we qualify from our group sef

Yeah, they will actually. Well, it's not surprising as almost all the malian and senegalese players are still based at home and haven't gotten deals abroad.

For the Malians, only Adama Traore (MVP @ NZ 2015) moved to AS Monaco of France. He won't be available for the U-23 AFCON just like "many" of our "Real" U-23 Star-talents based in European clubs.

Let's make do with this squad. At least we got a few top talents (Taiwo Awoniyi, Usman Mohammed, Oghenekaro Etebo, Zaharadeen Bello-- likely next U-20 captain, Junior Ajayi, Emmanuel Daniel, and Azubuike Okechukwu) that can inspire this team pass our opponents.

Osimhen is still young but may be a "shocking" joker.

The rest of the team just have to play as one cohesive unit and "truly" play to the strengths of our top talents in this U-23 Afcon squad.

Hopefully, we'll make it. *smiles*

As for help from a fellow man?? I'll say this..... Sometimes "true" help comes in weird forms and can further take you down the road of achievement.
But, Sometimes again, it can be deceptive and lead to your doom.

But never rule out genuine "help" from a fellow man. It might be your miracle or turning point.

George Lwandamina

by Phumzile Ngcatshe
Information coming out of Zambia is that the senior national team coach George Lwandamina has joined the U23 team ahead of the CAF Eight Nations tournament.

According to the Times of Zambia, ‘Chicken’ as Lwandamina is also known, has been roped in to boost the technical team as Zambia are looking to make their return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1988.

Lwandamina will work together with the head coach, Fighton Simukonda, with the Football Association of Zambia communications manager, Nkweto Tembwe confirming the move by saying Lwandamina is also part of all the national teams starting from Under-17 to the senior squad.

Speaking to the publication, Simukonda expressed satisfaction with the way the team was responding to training and that the final selection of the squad was done on merit because of stiff competition among the players.

“Chances of performing well are there. We are going there to pass the group stage, that is why we are going there. Otherwise why are we not going there if we won’t perform?” he said.

Chipolopolo are in Group A together with South Africa, Tunisia and hosts Senegal. They’re scheduled to resume their participation against Tunisia on Saturday, November 28.

The inclusion of the 16-year-old in Samson Siasia's squad for the Olympic qualifiers has raised a few eyebrows. Is the player ready to carry such a burden at this age?

Once again, it’s#GoalNGChattime this week; yet another issue of national footballing importance is placed on the front burner for discourse.

The African U23 Championship kicks off in a matter of days, with Nigeria’s campaign kicking off on the 29th of November against Mali. This tournament is intended as a qualifier for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The composition of Samson Siasia’s squad has been highlighted by the inclusion of Victor Osimhen. The lanky teenager announced himself at the U17 World Cup with 10 goals in seven games, but that was only last month!

Is he ready for this level, being only 16? That is the question:“Victor Osimhen: Too much, too soon?”

The #GoalNGChat comes up at 8:00p.m local time. All tweets into the event must include the hashtag: #GoalNGChat to be logged, and to also stand a chance of being included in the round-up editorial. See you then.

Kannemeyer backs ODG’s side

by Phumzile Ngcatshe
Former Bafana Bafana defender David Kannemeyer believes the South African U23 side must display a great deal of ambition as they’re set to face Senegal on Saturday.

The U23’s are currently in Dakar for the CAF Eight Nations tournament, their aim is to do well and qualify for the 2016 Olympics.

Three teams who finish on top will march to Rio and Owen Da Gama’s team is determined to reach Brazil to become the second generation of the U23’s to make it to the showpiece.

However, their road to reach Rio de Janeiro begins with the meeting against the hosts on Saturday and the Mpumalanga Black Aces coach says playing with a will to win will count for the team.

“I think the tournament is a great opportunity for them to reach Brazil and they just have to play as a team,” said Kannemeyer.

“Playing with a positive mind and winning their first match will definitely boost their chances going to the last two matches.

“It’s not going to be easy because all these teams want to be in Brazil but it’s all about teamwork, playing good football and converting their chances.

“I don’t doubt the talent in that team and the boys will go out to make the nation proud – we just have to believe in them.”

When asked about playing in a tournament such as the Olympics, the ex-Cape Town Spurs and Kaizer Chiefs left back adds that there are many possibilities for players.

“Playing in the Olympics is something big for any players, the atmosphere is wonderful, the excitement is unbelievable,” adds the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns man.

“It is a big step for a player and can open doors for everyone including the members of the technical team because scouts will be watching.

“I’d encourage the guys to do well and qualify, they will definitely benefit from the Olympics.”

CAF U-23 AFCON: Siasia faces double pressure

NIGERIA’s Under-23 team coach Samson Siasia is under intense pressure to produce result when Nigeria tackle Mali in the group B opener of the Under-23 African Cup of Nations, Sunday at the Caroline Faye Stadium, in Mbour, Senegal.

Siasia disappointed after the Nation’s Cup ouster

The former Nigerian international is fighting hard not to be distracted by the kidnap of his mother, who is still unaccounted for, two weeks after she was taken in Bayelsa State. He is also wary of his team’s goal shy attitude.

“The coach is under stress following the kidnap of his mother. But he is not allowing it to dis tract him. He is rallying round the boys for a good outing on Sunday against Mali,” said team media officer Timi Ebikagboro.

He added that the boys are determined to reach the crucial stages of the tournament where an Olympic ticket is guaranteed.

“Spirit in camp is high, nobody wants to lose the first game, they see qualifying for Rio 2016 as a must.”

The team was held to a 1-1 draw by their Gambia counterparts in a friendly before they left for Senegal. Siasia is banking on Taiwo Awoniyi and Junior Ajayi to solve the goal scoring problem of the team as was witnessed at the Africa Games in Congo.

#GoalNGChat: Is Osimhen ready for the U23s?

His inclusion was a desperate move by Coach Samson Siasia due to lack of quality U23 strikers in the Nigerian league. He was not sure of the availability of Isaac Success and Taiwo Awoniyi though there is also Junior Ajayi. Osimhen was initially rumored to have been dropped but after it was certain that Success will not be available was called back.

I dnt think Osimhen will be expected to play any major role. The two main strikers are Awoniyi and Ajayi. Osimhen may jst be given some playing time when d need arises and I think it will be a good learning experience for him. Five years down the lane (2020 Olympics) we hope to see a fully matured Osimhen in the Olympics team.

My dear forget about whether Senegal and Mali are presenting their U20 Teams. This is U23, if they chose to present an U20 or U21 team they are short-changing themselves. Besides, the Senegalese team that won the AAG was not mostly U20.

Nigeria are favorites to scale through that group. When it comes to football at this particular age grade Nigeria stands tall from amongst the other 3 teams in that group. We know we don't have our best legs available for the qualifiers but one thing I know is that the team is good enough to pick the ticket. One thing I like abt this team is they know how to play good football and also create lots of chances which is typical of Siasia's teams. Meanwhile Dream Team 5-0 Gambia U20 .After d first game ended 1-1 Siasia requested for a rematch. grin

Victor Osimhen has real talent. I feel he can be the surprise player of this tournament. If he gets an opportunity and he takes it, Coach Siasia will not hesitate to give him a run.

I think it's a good decision to call up the Lad! Presently he's hot, thus he needs games and exposures to develop his talents rapidly!
We should praise Siasia for the decision and not seeing it from the angle of desperation!

Man, I go conservative on my expectations on Osimhen. The guy is still very young and still has a lot to learn. Even Awoniyi will have to raise his game to be able to physically compete at this level. Remember this is the U23.

Battle of favourites as Nigeria face Mali in U23 AFCON

Osimhen (right) against Mali in the final of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile. He will now be up against Mali U23s in Senegal on Sunday

The two top teams in the U23 AFCON Group B, Nigeria and Mali, will slug it out on Sunday evening in the tourists’ resort of Mbour in Senegal in what many believe could determine the winners of this group.

Nigeria U23 team, Dream Team VI, will begin their campaign at the U23 AFCON on the artificial pitch of Caroline Faye Stadium by 5pm after they rounded up their training camp in The Gambia with a big 5-0 win over Gambia U20 team after both teams first drew 1-1 in another warm-up game.

Samson Siasia’s team will hope for a winning start against Mali, whose country has been on a high internationally this year after they finished third at the FIFA U20 World Cup and were beaten finalists in the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Historic Olympic gold medalist in 1996, Nigeria are featuring in the U23 AFCON for the second time after they failed to make it to the London 2012 Olympics, while Mali will be appearing at the competition for the first time.

The Malian Eagles are big and physical, meaning the Nigeria lads must use their athletic prowess to come out victorious.

They have picked several bronze medalists from the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup - including keeper Djigui Diarra, defenders Aboubacar Doumbia and Souleymane Coulibaly, midfielders Diadié Samassékou and Souleymane Diarra and striker Souleymane Sissoko.

Their major absentee is COB winger Abdoulaye Diarra, who featured during the entire qualifying campaign before he was dropped by coach Cheick Oumar Kone.

Mali prepared for the tournament with warm-up friendlies against Senegal (0-0 in Toubab Dialaw on Sunday and 2-2 in Dakar on Tuesday).

The Eagles have failed to qualify for the Olympics since they debuted at the 2004 edition in Athens, where they fell to Italy in the quarterfinals.

Dream Team have been boosted by overseas-based strikers Junior Ajayi (CS Sfaxien, Tunisia), Taiwo Awoniyi (FSV Frankfurt, Germany) and hopefully that should rid them of their shyness in front of goal, which robbed them of gold at the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville in September.

Warri Wolves attacking midfielder Etebo Oghenekaro has been on great form leading up to this championship, scoring four goals including a hat-trick against Real Banjul.

If his knee could hold out in Senegal, Nigeria will have a great chance of going all the way in Senegal.

However, it is left to be seen how the team in Senegal will respond after 12 new players were included on the squad from the AAG.

Nigeria/Egypt: We Don't Fear Any Opponent, Egypt's Coach Tells Siasia

By Christian Okpara

Egypt begins their campaign at the Senegal 2015 African U-23 Championship with the sole aim of taking one of the three Rio 2016 Olympic Games' tickets on offer. And not even the presence of Nigeria in the same Group B can stop the young Pharaohs, their coach, Hossam El-Badry, has boasted.

Egypt will take on Algeria in M'Bour on Sunday in the Group B opener, before Nigeria tackles Mali on the same venue.

The two rivals will be looking to get their campaign off to a winning start before facing heavyweights Mali and Nigeria.

Speaking on his team's chances in Senegal, El-Badry said, "I have a target and it is to qualify for the Olympics, no matter what the names of the opponents are.

"We don't fear any opponent as we look to win all our games in the continental tournament to reach the Olympics," added the former Ahly manager said.

El-Badry's optimism comes from the fact that most of his players are tested stars, who can stand any condition.

My thoughts exactly Sir Goodjoe.......*smiles*

Osimhen may turn out "the shocking" joker of the team. In fact, had Kelechi Nwakali showed up in camp, I wouldn't have been be surprised, if like Osimhen, he made the final list. He would have probably displaced just one person in the midfield dept (but not Usman, Okechukwu, or Etebo).

But I understand Sir Icon4ss (Aka Icon4s»» AntiSpamBot @ work right? *smiles*).

Osimhen and his unique class of 2015 U-17 (the next U-20 class of 2017 plus additions) and the 2019 U-20 Class/2017 U-17 classes WILL FORM THE CENTRAL CORE OF THE "NEXT DREAM TEAM" FOR THE 2020 OLYMPICS.

Yes, he's young and this experience gained will make him even better going forward BUT like you pointed out, THE LAD IS THE REAL DEAL. He may just defy "Age differences", like Awoniyi did in the U-23 AAG qualifiers against Zambia in lusaka, and go on to shoot Nigeria to Glory.

I think he will play a bit-part role but hey! Like I said earlier, he may turn out to be our "biggest and most shocking" Joker.

*smiles* Like you Sir, I strongly believe in these lads. They will conquer in Senegal.

After this, then the "fully loaded and full blooded" Dream Team will emerge for Rio 2016........ And we're taking no prisoners............*smiles*

Good morning and happy friday Sir Goodjoe........*smiles*

No doubt he is very young but his pace and finishing skills is up there with some of the best. The way that boy wraps his foot around the ball during his shooting is brilliant. I doubt we have a striker with that skill set on the ball.

Remember, Siasia knows the boy well, having watched him train regularly. I do not think Coach Siasia will call him if he feels Osimhen has little to contribute to the team. This is a big deal for Siasia. I feel Osimhen's pace and finishing skills can help him deal with the physical nature of the tourney.
