The Roman Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has urged Nigerians to stop condemning the Federal Government on the war against the Boko Haram insurgency.

Kukah, however, decried that the war against terrorism had been plagued by politicking.

In an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, the bishop said the government would have achieved results, if some things had been done differently. He stated that it was necessary to stop the blame game and work towards getting the country out of its predicament.

Kukah said, “The idea that government is not doing enough is an oxymoron and an extension of our creeping cynicism and the unfortunate politicking that has dogged this tragic war. No one has come up with a superior exit war plan.

“It is true, a few things could have been done differently. As they say in Hausa, ignorance is at the back of the head. We have to take off from where we are and stop the blame game. There is a lot of credit in the bank of blame to enrich us all.

“We are on a long road and we must wear the shoes of the long distance runner. Let us not be deceived and do not listen to anyone who might claim that they know how this can end tomorrow. We have been dealt a tough hand and we must play it.”

According to Kukah, those who complain that government is not doing enough are the same people complaining that the war is costing too much.

“They are the ones who laugh at the country as it struggles to overcome obstacles by those who do not wish us well, and they are many who pose as friends of Nigeria.

“You say the government is not doing enough but it struggles to do what other nations caught in this kind of web will do, and we rain abuses louder than even our enemies. It is sad and sickening, really,” he added.

I am perturbed at the mindset of my fellow Nigerians on the fight against terrorism in our dear country.

In other part of the world, terrorism is a joint war commonly fought together by all parties irrespective of political divide.

Our own wars on terrorist are self-made, self-inflicted and concocted for political gains and or for selfish interest.

Instead of us to stay united to win the wicked intruders, we are quick to castigate the government of the day.

God please continue to rise and defend the defenseless.

Everyone knows that it has been politicized. The only way the opposition knows how to score points is by finding fault rather than proffering reasonable solutions to the problem
