Generally I think an average car's reserve should be about that but I think if one is to determine how much distance your 'red light' can still travel, a lot depends on the extant state of the and such factors as engine condition, tire pressure, fuel system among others like traffic et al.

1) Read your owners manual for what it says, each car has different shape gas tank so it will vary.

2) You don't need to drive your car to empty at all.

Just get an app like GasCubby if you have a smart phone. Trust me you don't want to make a habit of running your tank dry. The junk in the tank can get sucked into the system.

Easy method to calculate.

Fill tank

Reset odometer

Drive 100km

Fill tank again.

How many litres did it take to refill?

Assume it was 10liters car does 10l/100km.

Stop allowing your fuel get to empty, its bad for the fuel pump, fuel acts as a cooling medium for the pump, when its low cooling drops and pump runs hot.
