Police Parade Dogs That Attacked Four-year-old Boy by larrymoore(m): 5:34pm On Oct 21, 2014
The Lagos State Police Command has said only a court of
law could decide whether the two dogs which ate the skull of
a four-year-old boy in Igando area of Lagos State, Omonigho
Abraham, be killed or not.
The command, which paraded the two dogs at its
headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos State on Tuesday, added that
the dogs had been examined and been found to be disease-
free.
The Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti, said it was
important to parade the dogs so that the public would rest
assured that the dogs were still in police custody, and had
not been released as being rumoured.
He said, “We have brought the dogs out so that the public
would know that they are still in police custody. They have
been examined and show no negative trait. It is only the
court that will decide what happens to them. The police
cannot decide to kill the dogs.”
PUNCH Metro had reported on Tuesday, October 21, that the
victim, Omonigho, had asked the police to kill the two dogs
which bit his skull.
A veterinary officer of the police, Yahaya Usman, also told
journalists that the medical record showed the dogs had
neither rabies nor other dog-related diseases.
He said, “Initially, we quarantined the dogs, and wanted to
find out whether the dogs had any disease or not. That was
the first step taken by the police. The dogs were under our
watch for a period of weeks.
“So far, they have not shown any negative trait. The medical
history shows that they don’t have rabies or the Ebola Virus
Disease. The dogs are with us, and only the court will
determine what happens to the dogs.”
Meawhile, the victim’s father, Mr. Odiah Abraham, told our
correspondent the dog had three days to the incident
chased a neighbor and his wife had warned the dog owner,
but he refused.
He said, “Three days to the incident, a woman who lives in
the neighbourhood had gone downstairs to spread her
clothes on the line.
“She had left and was approaching her room when the dogs
ran out of their cage and pursued her. She was just lucky
that she was close to her room, if not they would have bitten
her.
“She ran in and shut the door against her. The dogs stood at
the gate for some time and when they saw she did not open,
they ran back to their cage.
“My wife met Stanley (Wesley) and told him to do something
about the dogs, as there were little children within the
neighbourhood, but he just ignored the warning.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that Wesley was the brother of the
owner of the house and had been the one collecting the rent

These are small dogs, and obviously not that wild. There is no reason why the police should have felt helpless to protect that poor boy from them for a whole hour. This incidence reeks of human cluelessness. People - especially children - just don't know how to behave around dogs.

The lesson for us dog owners is that it's our responsibility to educate the people around us about how to behave around our dogs, and to socialise our dogs with the people living with us - especially children - so they will not get us into trouble. If a child is agitating your dog by taunting him and throwing objects at him, catch the child and correct him. Insist that everyone in your home must be introduced to your dogs.

It's safe for dogs to play with children who have been educated about how to behave around dogs, but they should be supervised by adults.

Haa shocked shocked shocked shocked these are German shepherds na and this breed of dog is not on the over aggressive side so something really went wrong somewhere. May be the man was starving them which resulted in their been extremely aggressive or he was feeding them or raw meat. This is the reason why am against feeding dogs on raw meat. #team cooked meal all the way#

I appreciate ur direction of thought, quiet an advice. The deed is done, who is to be punished here, the dog or its bearer.

when I first read the previous post about this dog attack, I felt the dogs would either be Caucasian shepherds or maybe rottweiler buh never German shepherds. they aren't known to be vicious, maybe they weren't fed for long. I think the police should adopt them and handle the expenses of the kid's treatment

what nonsense

do you know why there are warning signs and access control around construction sites?

because they are dangerous to untrained people.

the onus is on the dog owner to train his dogs , not the other way around.

in this case, the dogs went into the victims personal space

i would love for the owner of the dogs to be seriously dealt with. everyday, i see silly boys swaggering around with dogs they probably cannot control, because for them, it is some silly game of oppression/showing off.

the only time when a dog attacking a person can be justified is trespass on a property that has clear warning signs.

anything else, the blame is on the owners

the stoopid dog owner was probably a law unto himself with his canine terrors.

This is a misunderstanding. Those "silly boys" were not "swaggering around" with their dogs. They were walking their dogs. The reason they have to do this is to exercise their dogs so the dogs will be mentally balanced. A dog that is not regularly exercised can become crazy and difficult to control, so it's in the interest of the public for them to walk their dogs. They are not trying to oppress you with the size of their dogs.

I think the parents of the victim and the dog owner should be allowed to settle the issue privately. The owner should pay all the medical bills, and the dogs should be sold to an owner who can manage them more responsibly. The tenants could get some dog management training too.

The strangest part of this saga for me is that the Dogs involved are GSD's..

@ OYB..

The part I agree with you is that a pet owner is liable for his or her pets actions. A woman in the United States was jailed after her Pitbulls attacked a Animal Control personnel that came to take the Dog into custody after several complaints of attacks on others.

The one point I keep emphasizing to Dog owners is to treat their Dogs with utmost care and attention the same way you would treat a Loaded gun. I remember when I was younger and would run at the sight of a Dog and my firends kept telling me to stand still.. Well, I tried standing still and still got bitten. Dog owners living in open spaces like condos, picket fenced neighbourhoods and places where unfamiliar (to the dog) persons may be in should always keep their dogs on a leash.

I dont think there is any real right behavior to adopt around a Dog per se, however the one rule at all times is not to antagonise a Dog. Dont throw stones at one, dont poke it even if its on a leash and dont do anything that the Dog may consider a threat.

The one problem in Nigeria today is that many people own Dogs and never spend anytime to educate and train their Dogs or even send the Dogs to obedience school.

But for these Dogs in question, they should be taken out back and gunned down. They are obviously untrained and are highly volatile. I say so because the wounds on that kid were not from a simple bite but a mauling. They should not be returned to their owner and in a civilised world, the owner would be barred from ever owning a Dog.

None of my numerous Dogs would behave like this even in my absence.

The owner of these dogs probably felt the same way, which is why he allowed his dogs to roam freely with untrained humans in his absence.

Untrained humans in this our daily struggle in life just to make ends meet, which time would a human dedicate to acquire training on how to behave around dogs? Dogs are never comfortable with people other than their owners and probably the few people they are used to. they always bark wen dey see strangers and are always ready to attack. I can remember as a kid I was bitten by a dog. I was just goin somewhere passing close to a house with dog. the dog saw me and started barking and coming towards me. I got scared and had to run for my dear life, it pursued me, caught up with me, and bit me. Since that day till now am very scared of dogs. I don't enter any compound that I know has a dog. Dogs like to bite and me I don't wish to be bitten again. If a dog bites any member of my family in this life, I swear I must kill dat dog. Humans have a lot of trainings to acquire, and the least of all is a training on how to behave around dogs.
