More than 600 ladies aged 20 to 35 have made an
appeal
for eligible bachelors to visit their home Noiva do
Cordeiro,
in south-east Brazil.
The predominately female settlement has its sons sent
away at 18 and only a few husbands allowed into
town
on the weekend.
"Here, the only men we single girls meet are either
married
or related to us, everyone is a cousin. I haven’t kissed
a
man for a long time," Nelma Fernandes, 23, said.
"We all dream of falling in love and getting married.
But
we like living here and don't want to have to leave
the
town to find a husband."
The settlement was
founded by Maria
Senhorinha de Lima after
she was branded an
adulterer after leaving a
man she was forced to
marry.
Chased out of town in 1891 the catholic church
excommunicated her and the next five generations of
her
family.
Looked down on by society the town became a home
to
other women who had also been shunned and soon
enough they were isolated from the outside world –
and
men.
But hold your horses fellas before you book your
plane
ticket, the town is more than just Spice Girl levels of
girl
power.
"Do what we say and live according to our rules,"
says
Nelma.
"There are lots of things that women do better than
men.
Our town is prettier, more organised, and far more
harmonious than if men were in charge.
"And there’s always time to stop and gossip, try on
each
other’s clothes and do each other’s hair and nails."
