Swapping Tyre Sizes On A Sedan..... by talk2odim: 1:54pm On Oct 27, 2014
I am considering swapping all my tyres from 215/60/R16 to 225/60/R16. Would there be any adverse implication since it is technically not the manufacturers specification. What are the pros and cons.......Expert views pls. Thank you

Try and fit 1 wheel first before you swap the 4, some times the tyres touch the suspension which could be dangerous, if there is enough clearance you are safe.

Thanks bro.....i actually saw it in another car that was the same model as mine and it wasn't touching the suspension . My concern is impact like reduced mileage, speedometer readings and other stuffs like that. it is technically the same height but more width....

The width would not cause a problem it would even give you better grip on the road. Speed reading would remain the same.

Thanks for the info...cos i have always preferred to stick with manufacturers recommendation.
Thanks bro.......

I may be wrong let's get a 2nd opinion. Lomomike please help.

215X60/16= 806.25
225X60/16= 843.75

In my opinion its not much of a difference. You'll gain some height. But the width of the tyre and its radius will be same.

Actually from what i saw there was a difference in the width but the height was not too noticeable.

What did you just calculate there?

Please, I do not intend to derail your thread...what impact would changing your tyre from 225/60/17 to 225/65/17 have on a Toyota Sienna 2004 model. In this case, I think I will gain more height but the width remains the same. Any impact on speedometer reading, mpg, etc.

Negligible changes.

Guys, please, everything changes when tire size changes.

When we talk about tire sizes weren't talking in absolute numbers but in ratios.

So one of the sizes, height, width or profile will have an effect on the total ratio.

What did you just calculate there?

I made a very rough calculation with out conversion of any value to inch.

If I were to convert to inch I'd give a concise and neat value.

To convert to the first 3 digits in front are mm but to really calculate, convert to inch by dividing via (25.4x2)
Eg.

225/60/R16= (225X60/2540X2)+16 in = 18.7inch tall tyres.

215/60/R16= (215X60/2540X2) + 16 in 18.5inch tall tyres.

Hope I have succeeded in convincing and not confusing you? grin

No i still don't know why you are dividing by "2540x2". and the bolded

Conversion from mm to inches.

Note: 1 inch =2.54 cm. And we are dealing with mm not cm Hence, 25.4 but we know 225/60 is mm. And 60 is the sidewall. Which is 60% of 225.
Am I understood?
To convert every digit there into inch we use the 25.4 but we make it a whole 4 decimal digit. Hence, 2540.

Now 2540X2 comes in to play.

You know how to make stuff complex like trac. grin grin

Extra tip. you can calculate the difference in circumference (ratio wise) to know the difference in speed and distance.
