Five domestic airports will be constructed in the capital cities of Bayelsa, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa and Ogun states, the Federal Government has said.

The government said the plan to construct airports in Yenegoa, Brini Kebbi, Lokoja, Lafia and Abeokuta was to ensure easy movement of passengers and cargoes across the states.

The Minister of Aviation, Mr. Osita Chidoka, who disclosed this in Abuja on Monday, said that work on the new airports would soon commence, adding that the plan was in line with the Federal Government’s strategy of linking the states together and establishing cargo terminals across the country.

Chidoka made the announcement at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Aviation while hosting the Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada.

Explaining why Kogi State needed an airport, the minister said, “Lokoja, being a historic town with different artefacts, has the capacity to serve as a tourist attraction that can generate a lot of revenue for the government.

“So, we are going to work with the Kogi State Government in the construction of the airport to attract investments to the state.”

According to the minister, the proposed airports will further enhance the establishment of cargo terminals for the export of agricultural produce as well as increase Nigeria’s value addition capabilities.

Chidoka said the Federal Government was willing to collaborate with the five states in working out the details to ensure seamless construction of the airports in the capital cities.

This, he said, would showcase to the world the tourism potential inherent in each of the states.

The minister decried the aviation sector’s low contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, and stressed that increasing the number of airports across the country would open up the industry to contribute more to the economy.

In his remarks, Wada noted that Kogi State was interested in establishing a world class airport that would be the agricultural hub for the North Central.

The governor said he was at the ministry to seek the Federal Government’s collaboration on the construction of an airport in the state.

Wada said his state was into the production of several agricultural produce and the establishment of an airport in Kogi would enhance its export potential.

He, however, noted that his government planned to work with private investors in joint ventures for the construction of the airport.

Why do they need airports in Lokoja and Yenagoa?
Yenagoa isn't that large to begin with and Lokoja is a glorified hamlet.
White elephant projects to aid in looting the treasury. RUBBISH

Not a bad idea, i believe every state should have at least an airstrip or a mini airport. Maintenance is the question here.

An aerial view of the International Cargo Airport Amassoma in Bayelsa State, showing the runway under construction, being undertaken by the Gov Seriake Dickson led Restoration administration.

This pictures were taken in August the CBT has been layed and the runway is at advanced state of construction as we speak. Its not a paper project. Airports are not luxury, they are necessities. There is no reason why all the states in Nigeria Should not have at least one airport. FYI all the existing airports in Nigeria have either seen completed rehabilitation or their rehab is ongoing, dont pretend as if you are not aware of this facts.

While 5 new terminals are under construction by chinese companies and 13 cargo terminals are at various stages of construction across the nation.

Who gives a heck they were constructed? What purpose are they serving, and what's the air traffic like?
Because Ilorin and Akure have redundant airports Lokoja and Yenagoa too deserve the same misuse of funds.

Campaign promises and tools to thrill the gullible ones. Same way second niger bridge was promised in 2010 but work started on skeletal mode in 2014. Why and how do we arrive with this kind of divisive and unfocused government.

From increasing corpers allowee in 2010 against 2011 election to giving them daily feeding allowance in 2014 against 2015 election. New airports in 2014 smack of lousy campaign slogan for 2015 election. Has he completed the second niger bridge yet? Who are the thinkers of this government ? Must you go through same path everytime?

Only fools are sold on this kind of illtimed and emergency projects that are not even captured in the year's budget or the MtEF of government for next year or the year after

Some of you just go about hating everything about this government without engaging in cogent mental and metabolic reasonings.

What is wrong in constructing an airport? It's simply a means of transportation.

What do you guys expect? Electricity? Job? Are we talking about the same electricity Buhari couldn't give you while he still has some energy and flesh on his bone? Or the electricity Obasanjo couldn't give you in 8Years?

Or could it be job or water? The same water Fashola couldn't give Lagosians in 8years?

Lol, some of you really think Buhari will give you a Canada in 2years grin grin

In my own perspective, GEJ is one of the best president Nigeria has ever had, and the best President in the fourth republic! Nigeria will not transform to Canada until we Nigerians change our mentality to those of Canadians. Some of you do not pay PHCN bills, some still bye-pass illegal cables and they think BUHARI will give them "34hours light per day."

Good as their intentions may be ..I just feel it its really senseless having so many airports in this country... why not take the money an invest in rail infrastructure which is very cost effective and low cost means of transport in people and goods. It just doesnt mkae sense building airports everywhere. What we need is rail passenger and cargo terminals not bleeping airports

All those airport are initiated by the respective state govts. Abia And ebonyi can initiate their own airport if they consider it important to their economy, they have a template in dutse airport a nice airport that cost N15billion and was built in 2 yrs with no fuss. jigawa airport, bauchi airport, Asaba And Uyo Airports were also built by the respective governors.

The state plans their airports, budget for it, and collaborate with the the private investors and FG for approvals and technical aid to get the job done. Abia and Ebonyi can do same i know Osun is also doing same.

^^^The Nigerian thieving political class are not interested in your 'rail infrastructure' b'cos that will mean coming into close contact and rubbing shoulders with the annoying poor talakawas....the great unwashed!; but with airports, they can charter a luxurious jet and don't have to suffer the indignity of sharing the same transport with them lot! There's a method to their madness you know! wink
