The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Sunday warned the federal government and security agencies that they must ensure nothing happens to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.
The NLC gave the warning in a statement by its president, Abdulwahid Omar.
Mr. Omar described the withdrawal of Mr. Tambuwal’s security details as “shameful, distasteful, unconstitutional and demonstrates our parochial sense of power and very little knowledge of history.”
The Speaker’s security details were withdrawn by the police because he left Nigeria’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
Since that decision by the police, ostensibly under the instruction of President Goodluck Jonathan to whom the police chief reports, the government has come under attack by political, labour, and human rights groups including the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, and now the NLC.
Read Mr. Omar’s full statement below:
We at the Nigeria Labour Congress are appalled by the withdrawal of security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, ostensibly because he had decamped to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The act is shameful, distasteful, unconstitutional and demonstrates our parochial sense of power and very little knowledge of history.
No part of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria says the Speaker of the House of Representatives should come from the majority party. Section 50(1)(b) only says, ” There shall be …a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves…”
In the Second Republic, the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, was elected from the ranks of NPP, not just an opposition party but the third strong , after UPN and NPN. We have other precedents across the world.
We find it appropriate to cite the examples of Mimiko and Ali Modu-Sheriff, governor of Ondo State and former governor of Borno State respectively. Their security details were not withdrawn when they decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
It gives us concern that our political leaders are determined to learn very little about democracy and always seem too keen to overheat the polity over things that count for little.
The police and other security agencies complicit in this disgusting conduct should hold their heads in shame. Herein lies the essence of strong institutions which we have always advocated.
For those who take pleasure in converting to personal use, public/state institutions, today’s men soon become yesterday’s men. What goes around, comes around.
In light of the foregoing, we demand immediate restoration of Tambuwal’s security detail and all the rights and privileges that accrue to the Office of the Speaker. It is not about Tambuwal, it is about the office which he holds.
And in any case, only few, arguably will contest that he has not discharged and acquitted himself as speaker.
We would like to be on record that we will not fold our hands while little minds threaten our hard-earned democracy. Nothing should happen to Tambuwal.
Signed
Comrade Abdulwahid Omar
President

For the speaker to have defected to an opposition party before he runs for the Governor of another State or other position without an amicable departure from the party that honored him with a speakership position for years, tells how indecent Nigerian politician are to the electorate and lack of ideology or to say the least, void of principle, whereby, the electorate have never been respected due to their medieval disposition to affairs of modern state; the scenario is best described as a wholesome disposition to a "cash and carry" dimensional politics.

The self centered move by the Speaker, is an invitation of crises to the Nigerian polity that is already in boiling point. The interest of Nigeria ought to guide an intelligent person in leadership.Unfortunately, I did not see that in Tamibuwal.

His action is short of a vagabond if I may insinuate with little reservation. The media, must continue to be the 4th estate and not provide a 5th column leverages by inflating the notion that there's uproar in terminating the security attaché to the renegade speaker. What did he the speaker expects? He must have plan B for his security. If not, he must be dumb. If I am PDP or the President, I will do more than that as long is it would be within the confine of the law of the Party and the land. PDP do not need to impeach Tambuwal in the House, the later is in majority and by simple majority follow parliamentary procedure to change leader in their house caucus. Tambuwal is a speaker at the mercy of the party that brought him there. One must not bite the finger that feeds him.

Not resigning before defection is a brazen affront to Nigeria democracy and any Media that say otherwise, is aiding 5th column agenda of a rebel.

Instead of fighting for Nigerian workers Abdulwahid Omar is busy lining his pocket and quoting one part of the constitution while ignoring the section that really matters (section 68).

This Omar does not even know his duty. In what capacity is he defending Tambuwal? When he had opportunity to speak for Nigerians he could not do it. NLC died since Oshiomole left it.

There is something many of us from the south don't understand about Fulani people. Their brotherhood comes first before Nigeria. Omar was speaking as a fulani man but using the cover of the NLC!

I hope Omar will extend this kind of protection to GEJ when his political traducers want to impeach him.

Fixed. You sound more knowledgeable in Nigerian theory and history than some of our governors and many acclaimed civilized southerners. Omar / NLC has no business in the HOR/Tambuwal snarl.

Bros, I don't get your point. Even GEJ knows that this man hasn't been with them all this while. Besides, you meant he doesn't respect his electorate. Who are his electorate? Definitely, or better still, probably not you. His pple have long moved to APC in sokoto...... They were just waiting for him and he, though took his time to consult, yet respected his electorates' stands....

I also join our NLC chief to "spit fire in saying nothing should happen to Tambuwal".
I hope and I am almost certain that nothing untoward will happen to him while praying that his new associates in the Arewa People's Congress, APC who are drama queens & kings will not stage manage anything in that sense for public sympathy seeing as many of us are MUMUS.

However does anyone know when the NLC chief will join us to spit fire on these legisLOOTERS who spend 25% of our budget (according to ex-CBN chief, now Emir SLS) and add nothing of value to the society while grudgingly agreeing to a miserable N18,000 minimum wage that is mostly not paid by states and even workers owed several months shocked

NLC is definitely ignorant of the Provisions of the Constitution. While The Constitution makes express provision on the condition for the tenure of the members of the Legislative arm of government, the Constitution is silent on the tenure of the Governors if they leave the Party which brought them to power. And that's why PDP was handicapped when Five Governors decamped from PDP. In a more decent society Tambuwal should have resigned from the Speakership the day he decamped from PDP to APC beause going by the provision of Section 168(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) Tambuwal lost his seat in the Legislature. The relevant question then is;can Tambuwal still claim the Speakership when by the provision of the Constitution he has lost his seat? My humble advice to Tambuwal is that he should honourably resign and desist from heating up the polity!

You are the ignorant on here. If PDP had any legal backing to remove the speaker, they would have taken it - instead of using impunity, back-doors, intimidation and other illegal methods. Today Jonathan is handing out Automatic Reelection to the lawmakers in order to get to impeach the Speaker.
