tell me am lying and i will tell you perhaps you never went to a nigerian higher institution. it is usually rumored that a first class student gets an automatic lecturing job in the department he/she graduated from but through out my days in the university i only knew of 2 lecturers with firstclass in my department the rest either made 2.1,2.2 or even a 3rd class.
why is it like this? cant this be seen as contributing to d fall in d standard of education in our tetiary institution? is it that d first class students are not interested in lecturing?
what do you guys think? i will appreciate response from academics like proffemi or any1 has the right answers to my numerous question. thanks

i remember clearly wen i was newly admitted in d uni, during d orientation programme a top university figure said its an automatic lecturing job for a first class graduate. u may b right (dats if they were offered the job) though.

There are so many reasons that account for this but among all this one stand out. The system try to frustrate the first class students as they see them as threat who are likely to overshadow them.

no wonder it sounded strange to u. Some lecturers even brag dat in their time dey never got above b or c in some courses nd so de victimise.

Because we have more people that graduated with 2.2 than first class! And more so most first class believes that they have a better chance in making it and earning more than they would in lecturing!

the fact that you a first class student does not mean you can make an impact in student lives, I know people who graduated with first class, But na through la cram la pour, How do you expect someone like that to teach or lecture his students. rather lecturer's like this come to class drop material and leave. on d day of exam they will set questions(strong ones). my opinion is appointment if lecturers should not be by grades. But on How he/she can make a positive impact in that system.

There r d ones dat really knw, and d ones dat really crammed..

Being a lecturer is a different thing entirelly.. Some one dat crammed to get a 1st class will be a flop lecturer..

I dont see how a person dat crammed to get 1st class is exceptional... But for those dat know, dey can be said to b exeptional

1. Being a 1st class student doesn't automatically make you a good lecturer.

2. Most 1st class students look for jobs that are better than lecturing jobs, it's only normal to want the best job available. (only a few really have the passion to impact knowledge)

3. Some 2.2 graduates resort to lecturing because their ability to get good jobs is limited, so they just go for their post graduate degrees and become lecturers.

Am not against the automatic employment of first class graduates, my point is not all first class student make good lecturers. talking from my little experience.
