optometry is a five year course while medicine is roughly seven years. there's no even room for comparism.
Optometry is six years and one year internship
Roughly 7 years bruh
Finally I am not comparing anything. Both courses have their area of specialty.

Medical Definition of OPTOMETRY. : the health-care profession concerned especially with examining the eye for defects and faults of refraction, with prescribing corrective lenses or eye exercises, with diagnosing diseases of the eye, and with treating such diseases or referring them for treatment.

Guy..don't define a course of study by its name....Are you trying to say Dental students study only oral diseases in a period of six years? or Optometry peeps study only the eye in the same period of time....I still wonder why medicine is so over hyped in Nigeria

Optometry is the same duration as medicine and the fact that it involves human eye.. .you know the rest
Medical students rotate through ophthalmology too in their clinical years in school nd it is even imbibed in their professional MBBS exam..
And here, it isnt just about examining for refractive errors nd prescribing glasses, u ve got to be equipped wt all eye diseases nd their management, surgical modalities inclusive..

Lemme let u know why medicine is hyped.
In medical school, u will be trained to be come a general practitioner which means u av to be familiar wt all aspects of medicine nd as such u sud be able to confront any health issues to a reasonable extent before u consider referal to a specialist if need be.
Hence, a medical student must be grounded in knowledge and skill in ALL branches of medcine s beginning from d basic medical scienes as in anatomy, physiology nd chemistry, then other branches as in
pathology nd pharmacology
internal medcine- cardiology, endocrinology, gastro enterology nd many more
surgery- general, plastic, orthopaedic nd lots more
Others are obstetrics nd gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry, ophthamology, radiology, orthorhinolaryngology, anesthesiology, community medicne...
And it isnt just about having d idea, u must prove ursef competent in their and basic skills hence u re subjected not just to paper examinations but also clinical assessments nd also oral examinations called VIVA
NB: u dont pass in medical schools, u only satisfy d examiners
U cud see d breakdown of what one will go tru in medicine is enough to scare one away..
For those already battling in its undergraduatehood nd d aspiring-to-be doctors , i say BEST OF LUCK!!

OP, I'd partially agree wiv u. As someone who studied Statistics in d university, at first, I tot it wud b easy bt wen I got into it, it wasn't wat I expected. U need to b a genius in dealing wiv figures n good in remembering formulas. Quite different from Mathematics I must say. Mathematics in tertiary institutions z more of calculus bt Statistics z an all rounder. Damn difficult I must confess

optometry is 6 years?
Optometry is not hard like medicine. simple
.
Every aspect of optometry is well covered in ophthalmology. Eye care was cumbersome for the doctor and optometry was carved out to take care of the lens part, though basic eye stuff are still taught to optometrist students too.
how is it among the 6hardest courses when there is a course /specialty that swallowed it?

Am sure am going to draw a lot of flak for saying this, but I don't get the hype about law being so hard to study. I just don't get it. Tens of people I know study law from home. A pensioner living opposite my house is studying law at the Open University, he will graduate sometime next year. Earlier this year on the blogosphere, the trending news was that Ini edo and Desmond Elliot enrolled into the open University to study.... Guess what? Law!
If law was as difficult as its made out to be, retirees and nollywood folks won't even dare touch the course with a 40 ft pole.
No disrespect to lawyers and law students but am yet to see a random retiree or a celebrity going back to school to pick up a degree in medicine, engineering or say architecture.
There must be a reason for that I think.

You see, in optometry, we deal with the occular aspects of the human body. It depends on how good one is in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology etc but as for me, the hardest part of optometry is optics. Optometrist also take care of eye disease and mind you, I NEVER said that optometry is harder than medicine or vice versa. But they are both hard.
As for the specialty that your talking about, It doesn't matter afterall, there are different specialties that 'swallow' different aspects of medicine too.

Unless a medical doctor undergo specialist course in ophthalmology, he cannot provide eyecare.
Optometrist also treat eye disease and perfom laser surgery. So what are you saying? You just mixed up general medicine with ophthalmology.
