The Speaker of the Ekiti State House
of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin, and
the Deputy Speaker have been
impeached and replaced by members
of the Peoples Democratic Party in the
assembly.
They were replaced with Hon. Dele
Olugbemi from Ikole Local
Government Area and Hon. Abeni
Olayinka from Ado Local Government
Area as speaker and deputy speaker
respectively.
The new officers were part of the
seven lawmakers that defected from
the All Progressives Congress to the
PDP on October 16 when Governor
Ayo Fayose was inaugurated.
But journalists were barred from
covering the impeachment process
conducted behind closed doors at the
hallowed chamber of the Assembly
but briefed after the sitting by the
new speaker.
Journalists, who arrived the complex
as early as 9am, were sent back at the
entrance of the press gallery by the
Chief Security Officer of the assembly
who said: “I have been directed not to
allow anybody to enter.”
Even after introduction as journalists,
he still insisted on not allowing them
in but rather asked the press men to
see the Clerk of the House who
apparently was in the chamber.
Our correspondent could not confirm
how many PDP lawmakers were in
attendance or the issue that
necessitated the sitting, but no APC
lawmaker was in attendance.
However, our correspondent observed
some officials of the Department of
State Service and some aides of
Governor Ayo Fayose were in
attendance.
