UnclePati:
I had a similar experience at Asaba. After a minor accident wit my KIA Optima

I contracted an alleged KIA specialist to help fix my car and he listed items I needed to replace to get it rolling. Among the items include Camber, tyrod, stabilizer Linkage e.t.c
The mechanic gave me an estimated bill of 70,000 to buy everytin and he defended the price wile swearing to God that he will nevr cheat anyone in his life.

He tried to make me believe that KIA have no spare partz in d open market and even if there are, the price is very very expensive.

I wasn't very comfortable with his price and his claim so I entered Onitsha Ngbuka/Obosi market my self and I got all the spare parts for less dan 20k.

Not hapi wit my actions the mechanic demanded that I must pay him 20k as service fee else I would nt leave wit my car he wouldn't fix the parts and he wouldn't allow another mechanic enter his workshop to fix d car up for me.

Well, for peace sake I settled for 15k service fee since he lost out in purchase of spare partz. I was done wit my official assignment at asaba and was due to return to lagos for a meeting and new assignment.

D mechanic upon realizing this he deliberately delayed fixing up my car until d last minute he called and told me my front passenger shock must be changed.

I didn't ve time to go see for my self I had to leave the car behind and I flew to lagos. so I asked him to go buy it and he charged me 12k for a single shock which I paid + 2k transport.

After my meeting in lagos I was given a new assignment so I returned to Asaba to pick up my car. Mr mechanic was done.

I drove down to lagos with strange noise coming from the shock. I visited KIA office only to be told that a volks wagon shock was fabricated and fixed in my Car.

I was mad. Real mad. The mechanic had fabricated and fixed a wrong shock which cost maybe 3k. While the actual shock cost just 15k for two.

I had no option than to ignore him and move on wit my life.

You be mumu. You would have given 2 police guys 2k each and they would have raided that mechanic shop and jacked the mofo straight to cell. You mean you still sent the fool 14k after you discovered he ripped you off. Haba.

do mechanics really repair cars or spoil?

My advise stay with them whenever the car is beng repaired,,,buy the spare parts urself..they will scare you that u might buy a wrong one..

always watch what is to be repaired on youtube..have a rough idea before you take it there. (Ive fixed repairs myself just by watching youtube)

they dont really know the job..I watch repairs on youtube on my phone with my mechanic beside me to show how its really done.. He enjoys the youtube clips too grin

@ op : 9ja mechanics ! They r bunch of scumbags and I repeat non of them is exempted even
If he is the chief priest of your village shrine not to talk of your personal pastor or imam.you just can't be
Wiser with them.your first encounter with them you get a fair treatment and 100 percent truth
After that na action film wey no go end.

My mechanic: still will continue using him .he is damn good but a senior criminal by name ijebu.
He will give u the correct market price of the part but once the cash is with him he won't buy the part
Buy find away around fixing the problem with guarantee I mean guarantee with a capital G! And if you
Ask for refund he will list uncountable things he bought to cover the money u gv him.since I found out his style
I either buy the parts myself and stay with him till he finishes the repair or I dont do the repairs at all.
I learnt this after loosing so much money with him but now am wiser.if am not chanced I give half the market
Value of the required part because I knw it will be same old story.after I sold my car because of him I bought
A diff brand and when he asked me I told him yes I hv and simply because I spend so much energy trying to make sure
He dupes me less because with ijebu u can't be smarter than him he will always rip u no matter ow small
But u keep coming back cos he is workmanship is tight!

So you still take your car to him after playing along with him to your detriment?! You are a very rare breed. Wait till he deliberately destroys an expensive item in your car and asks for an outrageous repair fee. A dishonest man is very capable of evils you can only imagine.
What if they are all dishonest (which they are, from my experience)? Then should we start repairing our cars ourselves? (a serious question)

No two people are same. There are still very honest mechanics out there. Mine gives me estimates for my parts and asks me to get them or offers to help me get them. I have also seen a few people say same about their mechanics here. My question to you is that if you were Op, what would you do?

Mechanic dealt with me when i was using my first car ('94 camry). Because i was a novice then. Now i do '07 Avalon. Any time i go to the workshop and they see the vehicle they will just tear me bill. It was worse-off when i was stopped at Ekiadolor after Ore and they told me that the tire was puffing out smoke. They so tricked me that day that they strip N50,000 off me. But now i discovered that almost all repairs in vehicles and DIY most especially if u have a repair manual. Also you can go on to youtube and browse the internet for solutions to your vehicles. Broaden your scope on your vehicles and you will be able to fix them cheaply. But you must be adventurous in nature wink

i have restrategized bro...now when i take my car to him, i dont leave without my car. he does everything in my presence....

That is exactly what I do too, just that sometimes, you spend the whole saturday wt the mech guy. They have a way of delaying your work, roaming aimlessly looking for 10 spanner so you can go,then they will lose something new in your car, replace it with their old one, then ask you to bring money. Then, they will refix that your old one as the newly bought one. Just like your experience wt your mechanic,na their trademark oooo.

Whenever I go to the mechanic,I don't leave the vehicle there,in fact, I call them the guy ahead like some 2 - 3days ahead to book an appointment .

Generally, these handwork guys, most of them are liars,be it a tailor, bricklayers, mechanic, plumbers, carpenter, electrician, painter, panel beater, rewire, generator repairer etc. If you are dealing with them, you need to be very smart, forget some of them that claim to be pastors ooo, all na story. By the time they finish with you, your pocket will not be the same again...

Years back, my first car had issues with the clutch. The mechanic said he was going to rub it the disc, while I disagreed with him and opted for total replacement. He vehemently objected to the idea threatening that it would fail only after a week or two and that he could not be held responsible if it did. He said if he did the rubit, he would give me a warranty of two years on the disc. Being a novice, I succumbed. Big mistake!

He fixed it and billed me exhorbitantly and I paid. Fast forward exactly two weeks later and less than 200km, the same clutch fell again. I called him and guess his response...'oga na so clutch dey do na, ask anybody. E fit fail you anytime.' That day I wished that I was renta ghost. I would have disappeared to his location and given him a good beat down. That was the first time and the last he ever touched my car.

Two years later, I invited him to an accident scene involving my friend's car. He was very hopeful and after messing his entire day up for him, we just called another mechanic to fix the car. He had already started throwing figures up and down hoping to make a killing, till we dashed his hopes. Till date, Whenever he sees me, he beefs me and I just ignore him like he doesn't exist. Now I have a mechanic that is a rare breed. Very good at his job and honest. Been working for me for 4 years now, no rip offs. Just time management is his issue.

Buy all the spanners keep them in your car DIY is very key on some components in cars that doesn't require mechanics.

This is working for me a great deal

My car was having black smoke and consuming hell of fuel. Also, the ignition rotor was melting every 10 km, It has melted 4 rotors
It was a big problem for me and 2 mechanics in my location could not fix it. I read online about the problem
1. Injector: I removed the injector and the nozzles, washed and serviced it, replace bad ones and the black smoke disappeared
2. Melting rotor: One of the plug wires was bad and I changed it
I now have my car back, ready to go anywhere, I mean, anywhere!
