Are you in this country? Follow trends and know what GEJ has done to our beloved Nollywood. And these are things the opposition can never dream about. If you may know, Buhari in an interview was asked of his plan for Nollywood; his response, "Nollywood is under Lagos. Fashola will handle that!"

U guys know nothing about what happens underground cos if u do , u wont blame nollywood, nobody in his right senses would invest a huge amount of money on a single movie in d nigeria of today, unless its a straight to cinema flick to recoup d money b4 the pirates come 4 d movie,......and even dat is a risk cos u dnt know if people wud actually pay to see ur movies in d cinema....@ d end of d day, u are the one loosing money via piracy or lack of intrest in ur movie by viewers.

This is d reason they take d easy way out by making a poor quality movies where they dnt hav much to loose , and if its successful, they gain profits, rinse and repeat..

STOP BADMOUTHING NOLLYWOOD!
Must they produce movies then.? Why don't they sit down first and find a solution to piracy first.?

I personally feel that Nollywood digged their grave ,the very day they allowed African magic to air their movies for free.I cant remember the last time we bought nollywood movies in my house and same goes for most Nigerian homes.
I strongly feel that its not too late to correct this anomaly because MNET can still be made to pay the appropriate pricing for the nollywood content if the leadership of nollywood wakes up from their current slumber. The major advantage nollywood has over MNET is that MNET cannot afford to yank off the afican magic channels at this point because of the followership ,so nollywood can actually capitalise on that to get a very good deal for themselves on their movies.
I also noticed that MNET is currently trying to develop their own short movies and i believe that if nollywood has gotten their acts together,MNET will naturally pay them to produce movies for them instead of doing it themselves.

People keep shouting money money money, its story please. Write a good story and caste upcoming that would interpreted well and your movie will be a hit. All the so called Nollyplank stars tell directors how they want to interpret their and what they want to wear! Where on earth does the actors dictate for the director what to do?

Over the years we wonder why Nollywood has refused to grow exponentially like the music industry.
My answer is that Nollywood has ignored the basics for great movies. without comparing with Hollywood that has huge production cost , great stories still remains the bedrock for all great movies.

The simple cure is to get very good screenwriters that will tell the African story in a world class standard

However this important aspect has been disregarded in Nigeria.

Scriptwriters are so poorly paid that most have dropped the trade. the cure to Nigeria's poor movies is to start finding professional scriptwriters who will write quality stories with low production cost in mind.

This is my opinion, what's yours?
I got concerned about the poor quality of nigerian films too, and it had pushed me to open a similar thread.... Part of the thread read thus:
".........I am not a stakeholder in the movie industry; neither am I a producer, a director, nor am I an actor. But the simple truth is that, it pains me that we nigerians are not patronising our movies; and it is not our fault.
The fault is in the movies.
The movies are trash.
We don't like them.
A normal nigerian would say "Aaww, Nigerian Movie.? No no no no. I don't watch Nigerian movies. I watch American, Indian or Korean movies".. And if asked why, they would reply "Foreign movies are cool, and they have quality"..
Now I am asking, what is the quality that these foreign movies have that our Nigerian movies don't have.? To be sincere, there are many many many of them.
It is true that some foreign movies are trash too. Not all of them are good................."

OP, U r partially wrong. The story might be the problem but I have seen wonderful stories in Nollywood movies (I mean d movie of N100) . The execution is one of the major problems, but the major problem lies in the Nollywood leadership hierarchy and the movie sensor board. In advanced countries wit eagle-eye sensorboard, they clamp down on movie that aren't properly executed, bad storyline, poor interpretation of roles...etc. Our sensor board hav turned a blind eye on movies that are poured out into the market.
Few weeks back I created a thread on porn movies in circulation in Nigeria, the posters I uploaded was directly opposite a school and children will come face to face with that sort of exposure everyday while going in and out of the school,... Our sensor board would have done well to sensor such movies or prohibit the display of the poster... The Nollywood leaders are also a bunch ofbackdated folks who admire their hollywood counterparts but are happy to remain where they are....

Yes of cos, Nigeria is ranked 3rd highest producers of movie in the world, but that honour is just for the quantity produced and not for the quality.

NOLLYWOOD a place where chinyere Wilfred is zack Orji's mother...

I HAIL THEE NOLLYWOOD! !!
My brother,, I opened a similar thread where people were telling the kind of stories or features they would like to be seeing in Nigerian movies.. Some of the things are......
"......I would like to see movies that chronicled the life of a young entrepreneur who suffered so much when he was young in the business, and how he finally succeeded thru some good decisions he made.. (and not thru some lucky opportunity from no where)...."
"....I would like to see a movie where someone got stuck in a dense traffic jam, and he decided to step out of his car and control the traffic, only to see some other pple who did the same thing.. And in the process, he met a lady was also controlling traffic with him., and in the end, they ended up being more than just friends. (I would like it if they met again in another traffic jam elsewhere.. Aaaahahahahahah)......."

D main reason is low budgeting in the west producers can use 10million dollars to produce a movie, but in Nigeria we want it fast...

Just watch out for where Nollywood would be by 2020 folks. I'm sure we'll be much bigger, better, and SWEET. Believe, folks, believe!

Creativity is the key; impossible is nothing! Problems and challenges only mean opportunities abound. Take Ay, a newcomer in the industry for example,or the continuing exploits of Kunle Afolayan. These ones are those embracing the future of Nollywood.

For scriptwriters, I'd advice you; imagine there's no restriction to production budgets. Imagine your screenplay would hit the big screen, what kind of stories can you write that's a contender for global and continental awards? Can we have a Nollywood Sci-fi, Action movie, Epic wonder, Thriller that thrills the very fibre of our being, Horror movie that's truly top-notch, Romance and Comedy flicks that are truly ingenious and original? Let's embrace the future of Nollywood folks.

On point @op. Right now I am even thinking of leaving the industry. I am a scriptwriter but most producers do not respect the place of the scriptwriter. There are so many times I have had to walk away from jobs because of the poor pay and working conditions. Many of the so called producers and directors know nothing about the job and some boast openly they can write a script in a day shocked. When you try to correct them they start reminding you that they put the money down for the production. I know of so many good writers who have left and I am working on joining them unless something happens.

Lynxx you are a screen writer?

Let's talk.

nollywood producers I simply they lack vision, I apologise for the better ones. movie making is not all about the money. it's one of the things that increases the standard of a country, we are not expecting some jumping from a plane or bridge but just something that would touch life, give us as a nation a sense of responsibility. not stories about helpless orphan girl luckily marries a rich man, which we all know that it's not everyday things like that happen, I love to see more of reality, what we see in our everyday life. the only way this can be solved is through the storyline they need to take their writers seriously. as for writers pls do not quit coz nollywood needs your creativity if not now but somday definitely. I write screenplays but I'm scared giving it out to someone who will destroy work i've work so hard to build.

One thing I have realised in Nollywood movies is the very poor scripts, you can always predict what will happen next and how it will end. You don't always need huge budget to make a nice movie. Anyone that has seen that British movie called Locke will testify to this. That movie has less than 7 actors in it but was thrilling and full of suspense throughout. That movie won lots of awards worldwide. You watch Nollywood movies and it's always about love, jealousy, evil and mother-inlaws and revenge.

You're so right. 'Locke' was a low budget film with pretty much just one actor seen on screen and the others as 'voices'. Have you seen the film 'Buried'?... Just one man buried alive in a coffin... brilliantly heart-pounding.
