8 Of The Best Players Never To Have Won A Top-flight League Title by franzis(m): 5:46am On Nov 23, 2014
“I’ve never won a championship, and I don’t know how this is possible in a 20-year career.” Fernando Torres’ recent comments about failing to win a title via Sport Wtiness, despite (at one time) being one of the world’s best players. After spells at Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and now AC Milan, a league title has eluded him almost as often as goals have.

Sure he’s won the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and the Segunda Division, but he’s yet to lift a top-flight league title.Torres isn’t the only one with regrets. There are plenty of talented players who haven’t managed to pick up a league title during their otherwise illustrious careers. While plenty of players have won individual awards or have managed to secure cup glory for their sides, they will always have that blank space in their CV that could potentially stop them from being considered as one of the greats.

So out of the plethora of players never to lift some league silverware, who are the best? We’ve picked out our top eight who are still waiting for their first title…

1.Steven Gerrard- Liverpool

While his honours board still looks respectable, his is missing that elusive Premier League title, after coming so close to finally picking it up last year. Though some players on this list have moved around more than a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick, Gerrard had stuck with Liverpool, even if he have gone through a dry patch.

The midfield maestro has had plenty of chances to leave Anfield, with Chelsea almost snapping him up in 2006 and rumours currently doing the rounds that he might be on his way out this summer.

There is still time for the Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Super Cup winner to pick up a Premier League (or any league for that matter) title. However, being 34 years old won’t do his chances any favours and he might have to do some deals with the devil to lift the Premier League title.

2.Gary Lineker-Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspurs.

When he wasn’t doing things to pitches or trying to sell us crisps, Gary Linekar was a prolific goal scorer for both club and country scoring 329 goals in 648 games during his 16- year career.

He did win the Second Division with Leicester City in 1980, and an FA Cup with Spurs in 1991, but his best chance for a top-flight title came during the three years he spent at Barcelona.

Lineker played 103 times for Barca and is still regarded as a legend, but he failed to lift La Liga. The BBC host missed out on glory in his first season in Catalonia by a single point as Real Madrid pipped their rivals to the title. Two years later and Linekar missed out on another La Liga title, this time by five points.

Though he had plenty of personal success by winning the 1986 Golden Boot and coming runner up in FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991, Lineker will always be dreaming of that league title.

3.Daniele De Rossi-Roma

Vice-Capitan Futuro has had an incredible 15-year career at Roma on a personal level, but he has been left to think what might have been on numerous occasion. De Rossi has been runner up with Roma in Serie A on six occasions, most recently last season after i giallorossi missed out by a massive 17 points, despite winning their first ten games.

De Rossi has done what only one other on this list has and won the World Cup, and is well aware if he had left Roma he could have won much more

“If I had gone to play elsewhere, such as Barcelona, I probably would’ve won more. My story is the same as Totti’s. But then you think of the people of Rome and the love of the fans, so that thought goes.”

De Rossi does still have time to win something with Roma, after all he is only 31-year-old, and with Roma’s strong start to this season, he could finally lift the Scudetto.

4. Jamie Carragher- Liverpool

Like Gerrard, Carragher has won plenty of other trophies and come close of a few occasions, but was unable to lift the Premier League title with Liverpool.

However, unlike Gerrard, Carragher missed out on the push for the title last season after he announced he was retiring at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

Though he won the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup twice and League Cup three times, Carragher claimed he regretted his decision to retired before last season.

“If I felt Liverpool were going to compete for the one honour that had eluded me — the Barclays Premier League — I would have said ‘yes’ in a flash.”

After playing 508 league games for Liverpool in a 17-year career at Anfield, Carragher missed out on the best chance to lift the title. Even Liverpool legend Jimmy Case believes the Reds’ would have won it if Carragher hadn’t retired.

5. Antonio Di Natale-Udinese/Empoli

Tony Christmas or Antonio Di Natale has been a revelation over the past decade or so. Despite being 37-year-old, Di Natale is still one of the deadliest strikers in Serie A. In fact, up until last season the veteran had scored more than 20 goals in his previous four seasons with Udinese.

Di Natale has stuck with his side even if they have looked far beneath the talents of the classy finisher, coming close to the drop on a couple of occasions.

Though he has scored almost 300 professional goals, Di Natale is yet to pick up a single piece of silverware and even rejected a move to Juventus to stay with Udinese.

6. Guiseppe Signori-Lazio, Bologna
Goals, oh so many goals, and a bit of match-fixing as well but let’s not mention that. Signori was one of the most lethal strikers of the 90s, but like Di Natale he failed to win a single trophy during his 20-year career.
Now picture this, it’s Saturday morning, and Gazzetta Football Italia is the only thing on other than Live and Kicking and you spot Signori smashing goal after goal in every week.

After being named Serie A’s top scorer on three occasions for Lazio you would have thought everyone would have been after his lethal services, but that wasn’t the case. Insteadhe spent another decade banging them in for Sampdoria and then Bologna.

7. Robbie Fowler-Liverpool,Leeds United

It’s sometimes easy to forget just how good Fowler actually was for Liverpool. It is nice to remember him for his fastest Premier League hat-trick ever(4.33mins), his infamous celebration against Everton and being in the Spice Boys.

However, he won’t be remembered for winning the league title, because well he never, even though he scored 128 goals for Liverpool.

He did win an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and the League Cup twice, but apart from that Fowler’s trophy cabinet remains lacking a league winners medal.

8. Youri Djorkaeff-PSG & Inter Milan

Before Djorkaeff was helping Big Sam out at Bolton, the French master was scoring audacious goals and forming a partnership with Ronaldo in Milan.

Though the Frenchman did win the World Cup with France in 1998 and the European Championships two years later, as well as a UEFA Cup, Djorkaeff failed to win a league title.

He did come close win Inter Milan in his second season, missing out by just five points, but he will be remembered for his World Cup heroics rather than winning a title.

Mathew Le Tissier should be on the list also.
One the craziest story is that of Alberto Aquilani who joined Juve on loan for the 2010/2011 when Milan won the league, the next season he joined Milan on loan 2011/2012 Juve won the league.
