New Auto Policy - FG to Partner Used Car Dealers

The Federal Government has announced its plan to carry along the motor vehicle dealers in its new auto policy implementation.

Mr. Aminu Jalal, Director General of the National Automatic Council, who disclosed this at a meeting with motor vehicle dealers in Lagos recently, noted that motor vehicle dealers are integral to the success of the auto policy.

According to him, "currently, most vehicle dealers trade in used cars and it is the intention of the council that they become dealers in locally manufactured vehicles."

He explained that the council will introduce companies to manufacturers and offer support to those that met the requirements of becoming motor vehicle dealers in the registration guidelines.

The National Automotive Council boss further noted that "it is expected that in the nearest future, used vehicles sold in the country will be those generated locally and not from abroad.

Meanwhile, Jalal has said that to improve the quality of cars sold, all the vehicles imported into the country must have road-worthiness from their countries of origin.

Also the importers are to ensure that their vehicles obtain SON CAP, adding that these measures will ensure that only cars in good condition are imported into the country.

On the fate of imported used cars, Jalal said government will not ban importation, but will give Nigerians a better alternative which is brand new vehicles at affordable price.
