As part of the fallout of the current global economic recession and downward slide of price of oil in the international market, Nigerians may have to pay more for
police services. This,LEADERSHIP learnt, is part of measures to bail the federal government out of its impending economic woes.

Indication of the move by government to employ the Nigeria police in its revenue generation drive came to the fore yesterday, during a 3-day workshop on ‘Improving Federal Government Internally Generated Revenue, IGR: Nigeria Police Services in focus,’ put together by the Ministry of Police Affairs.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Abdul Jelil Adesiyan, in his opening remarks at the stakeholders’ conference, alluded to what he termed consistent downward trend of revenue accruing to government coffers which he said had made many nations to look inward to improve revenue generation.

“Our country is not left out in the global struggle for
economic stability. This is especially the case given that earnings from crude oil which had been the major source of the nation’s revenue is suffering from challenges such as declining production, crude oil theft and price instability in the international market.

“One of the measures taken to rescue the economy is the need for diversification of the nation’s revenue generation. This calls for every sector to look inwards to identifying ways of boosting our Internationally Generated Revenue.

“I have the pleasure to inform you that the ministry of
police affairs with collaboration with the Nigeria Police has been making efforts to boost internally generated revenue of the federal government in spite of the current national security challenges,” Adesiyan said.

The minister listed some of the police services which the public would have to pay for to include police escort and special duties, private guards certificate fees, bank guards, sales and stores, arms and ammunition Licenses, contractors registration fees, tenders fees, international vehicle certification fees and international driving permit fees.

Others include police information fees, registration of firearms licenses, renewal of firearm licenses, auction sales, sales of police officers shops and messes, CID clearance certificates/fingerprint, auctioneer registration/renewal fees and rent of police quarters.

Adesiyan pointed out that the stakeholders’ conference was one of the efforts of the ministry to create a forum on how to enhance the internally generated revenue profile of the Nigeria police. “The conference is expected to come up with ways and means of getting full value for police services in the country through improved IGR,” he said.

The permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. James Obiegbu, in his welcome address, noted that all over the world, police services attracted charges, first to discourage indiscriminate demand for such services and generate revenues for the government.

Obiegbu observed that internally generated revenue from police services were not only low but on a downward trend. He also said that the charges collected for these services also lacked acceptable basis for procedure for computation and collection. According to him the system exposed the country to abuse.

Chai... what a relief.... on seeing this caption, I was scared. Imagine our policemen joining hands with government officials to collect tax!!!

The minister forgot twi streams of income accruing to the police.... bail is not free, roger at check points too. They must be captured and fully accounted for. These two will certainly boost return on investment..
