Is Ronaldo Chasing Messi? by lowwenfresh: 9:16pm On Nov 27, 2014
Opinion: Is Cristiano Ronaldo Chasing
Lionel Messi’s Shadows? Who would
have thought that the wizzard
Argentine, who debuted on the 16th of
October 2004 for FC Barcelona, would
go on to break almost every record
there is? This past weekend, Lionel
Messi broke Telmo Zarra’s record of
the most goals scored in La Liga, a
record which has stood for 60 years.
But let me rephrase – he didn’t just
break it… he tied it, he broke and then
he smashed it! On Tuesday, Messi
continued his perfect week by breaking
Raul’s all-time Champions League
record with another hattrick. In fact,
Messi has broken records at such a
rate that the history books are almost
running out of pages to hail him.
Overall, Messi has now scored 370
goals for the Catalan giants and has
long-since passed the record for the
club’s highest goalscorer. He has also
set the record for the most goals
scored in a calendar year with 91
strikes in 2012. In addition, he has the
record for most goals in all
competitions in a season with 73 goals
in 2011/12. He also currently holds the
record for most goals in a single La
Liga campaign with a staggering total
of 50, but Cristiano Ronaldo is on
course to break this record after
having scored 20 goals already this
season. Messi is the record goalscorer
in the most consecutive league games
after scoring in 21 games in a row, and
he has won more Ballon d’Ors than any
other player. The list goes on and on,
and the most striking fact is that Messi
is only 27-years-old. If he continues
at this rate, who will ever be able to
break his records? Yes, Ronaldo is in
scintillating form this season, but he is
two years older than Messi and joined
La Liga later than the Argentine. This
means Ronaldo may break a few of
Messi’s records, but it is unlikely he
will ever be able to write as many new
pages in the history books. It almost
feels like Ronaldo is chasing Messi’s
shadows because whichever record the
Portuguse breaks, Messi has broken it
already. The little 17-year-old, who
debuted on that October night in
2004 , has turned into a goalscoring
machine and has already been
immortalised as one of football’s all-
time greats. But who should be given
the most credit for Messi’s exploits?
Many consider Pep Guardiola as his
greatest mentor. It was the Spaniard
who shifted Messi from the right wing
to a more central role. “The best
players have to play in the centre,”
Guardiola said at the time, and that
was when his goalscoring stats
exploded. Other than his goalscoring
records, he has won an incredible 21
trophies with Barcelona. Since his
debut, the club has won six La Liga
titles, two Copa del Rey trophies,
three Champions Leagues, six
Supercopa de Espanas, two UEFA
Super Cups and two FIFA Club World
Cups. What’s left to say about a player
who, in order to describe, you almost
run out of superlatives? Without Lionel
Messi, football would be less
enjoyable, and even if you are not a
Barcelona fan, you can only kneel and
thank The Lord for one of the greatest
gifts to the beautiful game. Hail Messi,
the king of goalscorers… If you had
one word, how would you describe
Lionel Messi?
