LONDON — Professor Stephen Hawking is warning that artificial intelligence could end mankind as we know it.

In an interview with the BBC on Tuesday, he admitted his fears about the consequences of future creations, which could match or surpass humans' current abilities.

"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," Hawking said.

The theoretical physicist, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), uses A.I. to communicate.

At a press conference in London on Tuesday, Hawking spoke about new software from Intel Labs that can predict the next words he wants to say from words he previously inputs. The new SwiftKey system, which took three years to develop, means he has to type fewer than 20% of all characters.

Although he sees the benefit of existing artificial intelligence, Hawking said, he added that future machines could redesign themselves at an ever increasing rate.

"Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded."

In recent months, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk have compared A.I. to nuclear war and even demons.

"With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon," Musk told an audience at MIT's Centennial Symposium. "In all those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, it’s like, 'Yeah, he’s sure he can control the demon.' Doesn't work out."

Musk has said that A.I. is the biggest existential threat we face and called for regulatory oversight at national or international level.
