I went to the bank yesterday to withdraw N465,000 from Ecobank to pay a punter who won his football bet, i put the money inside a small bag and hung it on my neck. When i came out from the bank premises, a taxi stopped and asked where i was going, i told him "Slaughter", and he asked me to enter... there were three men inside the car, two in front and one at the back with me.

After about 10 minutes drive, the driver told me that my door was not locked and that i should open it and close it very well, i then asked him to slow down because he was driving with speed but he refused...

When we reached a quiet place, the driver slowed down, i opened the door but when i tried closing it the door refused to close. I tried and tried but no way. At that point all of them stretched their hands to assist close the door one after the other and in the process they touched the bag i was holding but i wasn't afraid cos the bag was zipped. When they still couldn't lock the door, they stopped the car and asked me to come down so that they could check the door. As soon as i dropped, they closed the door and zoomed off.

At that point i was so confused because my bag and phone was still with me, and i didn't even pay the tfare yet.

After they might've gone far, i decided to open the bag, and lo and behold all my money had turned into A4 paper cut into money size. I couldn't believe it was real. I closed my eyes and opened it wishing it was all a dream, but no, it was a reality i had to face. I nearly ran mad on the road. People were just staring at me because of the way i was acting.

All the same i thank God for preserving my life.. I know its not easy to lose such amount this period.

I reported the matter to the policemen i saw on my way back, they told me that they've been getting such report and that i should thank God i wasn't hurt... They also told me that the fraudsters always know people that have money with them (that they see something like flame of fire on their head).

Sorry for your lost. Next time don't walk around with such huge amount of money. Cashless economy is also because of crooks.

@topic, what a story! If they'd just stolen the money, I'd understand but with this addition of A4 paper? I don't buy it. Moreover, why would you carry such sum on you? You be ATM? Are we not supposed to be in a cashless economy?

Don't throw blames when the victim is another man.

It could be anyone. One sharp Lagos boy told me his own story where they took him to wash money with acid. Though he knew they were fraudsters but he had only N5k with him. He just wanted to know what they will do. They prophsied to him that his uncle had N30,000 hidden in his clothes hanging on the wardrobe. The boy went home and found out exactly as they said but he didn't return any money to them..

Instead he collected N500 Tfare from the fraudsters and eloped..

This kind of thing happened to my friend sometime last year or 2years ago at the sane trans amadi. He put the money in a bag and did not realise that the money had vanished into thin air. Tho they didnt replace it with papers, I really felt for him cos it was difficult for people to believe him.

Thankfully, he got a job that month and started using his salary to offset the debt gradually. It may never happen to you but it is a really horrible experience.

This cashless stuff has limits nah.

Like yesterday, I went to purchase an item from one importer. Naira to dollar slide has affected the price. Which kind cashless do you wanna do with an Igbo man importer ? He has no POS in his office and you wan come dey form bank transfer with your smartphone abi ? Cashless is theoretical, not practical. I have only accepted such payment twice. Unless you are dealing with a close acquaintance..

About d money turning to plain paper, i've never heard of it nor seen it b4 dat day.. but it happened.. Very soon u'll get to hear from other ppl because i biliv they'll dupe more ppl.

U seem like a script writer! Ur story doesn't make real sense at all! His account his dormant? So money can't be transferred into a dormant account and later re-activated abi? Or what happened to cheque?

U said ur bag was zipped, so how did A4 cut to size paper get inside ur bag unopened, or uncut ? How did the money also vanish? Are u sure u're nt on haloperidol medication?

YOu just learnt a sweet lesson. Never enter cabs or bikes in front of a bank. People don't go to bank with bags to carry garbage or firewood. Anyone who comes out of a bank with a bag must be carrying money. Why make yourself an easy target?

At least you only lost money. A woman, her police escort and driver were gunned down in 2010 in front of First Bank along Rumuola road at 1.05pm. I am sure you heard of that incident.

Use online banking. That is why CBN created it. Personally I never move more than 30,000 in cash for any reason. If it can't be sent via internet banking, then I will issue a cheque. It is that simple.
