The group want to massively improve Earth's ability to track asteroids in outer space. May said: "The more we learn about asteroid impacts, the clearer it becomes that the human race has been living on borrowed time." The group want June 30 to be known as Asteroid Day to boost awareness and efforts to prevent a deadly impact on Earth.

WARNING: Brian May has led calls to improve Earth's asteroid tracking ability [GETTY] “The more we learn about asteroid impacts, the clearer it becomes that the human race has been living on borrowed time” Brian May On that date in 1908 a huge asteroid destroyed vast swathes of land and forest in the Tunguska region of Siberia in Russia. "We are currently aware of less than 1 per cent of objects comparable to the one that impacted at Tunguska," May added. "Nobody knows when the next big one will hit. It just takes one." STAR GAZING: The group believe more can be done to analyse what is happening in outer space [GETTY] Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees said: "The ancients were correct in their belief that the heavens and the motion of astronomical bodies affect life on Earth – just not in the way they imagined. "Sometimes those heavenly bodies run into Earth. This is why we must make it our mission to find asteroids before they find us." It is widely believed a massive comet or asteroid brought about the end of the dinosaurs. So how could we steer an asteroid away from Earth? One theory suggests we should track them before firing small craft or rockets to explode and deflect them off course.
