God bless the OP for this thread.

I am at the verge of rounding up my MSc degree in Economics, after graduating with a 2.2 (3.28/5.00). My desire to go for the masters degree program after the first degree was because I felt I deserve better than what I graduated with. Now I'm doing very well with my MSc progress report.

I have about 8 academic papers, published in University based journals in Nigeria and 1 in an international based journal, and some other papers presently under review.

My concern is I graduated from a state University and also running the MSc in a state University as well.

I want to know the possibility of gaining a scholarship for my PhD outside the country.

It's very possible.
Provided your publications are top notch.
For a PhD, your grades and reputation of institution are less pertinent when compared to your research experience.
Besides, there are different institutions abroad, with reputation which is above par and below par, spreading your risks will ensure you achieve your goal.

As asserted by above forumite; for PhD scholarship abroad, almost all universities abroad don't even know which one is State or Federal universities and care less.

With a good number of publications in ISI-indexed Journals or SSCI or SSCI-E indexed Journals, you will easily get supervisors and higher chances of a scholarship.

Kindly focus more on publication in ISI-indexed Journals or SSCI or SSCI-E indexed Journals. 95% of the local journals from Nigeria/Africa are not indexed and abstracted in internationally acceptable databases. Hence, papers from those local journals have the least weight abroad or in reputable universities.

Best wishes!

For all postgraduate students and intending scholars:
We alll know that the soul of lecturing career lies in research publication.

For starters: you can start by publishing your undergraduate research work, your postgraduate seminars and thesis.

You may not have money to publish in expensive Journal houses like Elsevier and science direct, no problem, you can start by publishing in free journal houses. The more publications you have, the more your chances of getting that lecturing job or promotion.
I'll help by dropping one free journal publication house for interested scholars. I will drop more on popular demand.

Visit www.erjournals.com and see their list of journals (waste of time)....

Or

Just send them your article for publication at erjournals@gmail.com.

Be sure to write a good paper so that your article can be accepted for publication..

God bless our hustle
I so much appreciate your contribution Sir. I'd like to publish my undergraduate thesis in one of the free journals you mentioned but the challenge is, I want to pursue a Masters program in pharmaceutical microbiology then proceed afterwards for PhD in related field but my undergraduate thesis was on aquatic microbiology. There's no relevance at all to the area I want to specialise in because I wasn't allowed to choose my supervisor during undergraduate days hence the disparity. Please , should I go ahead with the publication ? I'd also appreciate if you could send some free journals publications to my email; joiceiffy22@gmail.com to guide me. Thanks so much Sir as I await your reply.

You can do a google search on SSCI, SSCI-E and ISI indexed Journals. A bunch of Elsevier, Springer and Taylors Journals are indexed and free to publish unless you choose open access publishing options.

You can do some search to each journal that suits your research area here: http://ip-science.thomsonreuters.com/cgi-bin/jrnlst/jlresults.cgi?PC=SS

I really don't know much about Nigerian universities. But I'll generalise.
4.1/5 is a decent score. Like I said, for a PhD admission, they are more keen on how well you can carry out research. You should have very solid publications in top notch journals.
Even if you don't, the purported mediocre research you have done might be enough to earn you an admission, and perhaps full funding in some not too elite institutions abroad. you just have to put in work.
Cheers!

You can publish your undergraduate research irrespective of the field. As you journey thru ur MSc/PhD, you will have to keep publishing. Your publications does not have to be on a particular field. You can publish articles in any area of your specialization (e.g, any area of microbiology). Just obey one rule: your articles must contribute to knowledge. I have sent you an email containing list of other free journals. Cheers

Guys pls advice. I have written my doctoral comprehensive exams, passed and given the go-ahead to proceed to the thesis. I was allocated to the number one prof in the dept. Met him for thesis approval, he said I should go and do a 5page summary of what I intend researching on. Its two months now I submitted this to him and he is yet to give me any reply. What do I do? I dont want to meet or start afresh with the second supervisor because I want the touch of this top prof on my work

Sorry, bro. You just have to pray for God's favour.

Scholars, why Nigerian lecturers act this way? It's very painful reading comments like these.

Mekky2010:
BA = Internatinal Relations and Foreign Policy
MA = Globalization and Conflict Management
PhD = History of International Relations and Foreign Policy ( concluded 2012)

All was done in Russia, initially as a private student but was later awarded a scholarship for masters and later PhD, there are good chances of securing scholarships for PhD, however, language barrier will be a deterring factor, hence, preference is usually given to those with sound knowledge of the language, thesis are written and defended in Russian in the presence of about 30 professors from various institutions.

My advise to any intending applicant is work as if your defense is the next day, else you ll be frustrated half way and pull out, close to 60% of students I knew never defended...some of the professors that ll be reviewing your work as you move on may be highly insensitive in their criticism, this can be highly frustrating especially when you know you have put so much hours in the library to get the work done.

Persistence is the key!!!!
congrats and thanks for insight.we share similar area of interest-B.A-history and international studies(project area-nigeria's post-cold war foreign policy challenges),M.A(in view),phd(in view), currently trying to register for GRE and ielts, drafted sop in development studies, peace and conflict studies, and in international politics.I seriously need a scholarship.
